yes, Nate is leaving the program. Tenitively I have been told that Handy will remain and I am assuming that Jon Panner will stay for Ben's senior campaign.

What I want to know is if any posters have heard any recruiting news coming out of King Arena besides Arron Garriott.

I'm sorry to see Nate go. He's got abilities and experience that could lead him back to doing work other than coaching, but if coaching is really where his heart is I hope that he finds a position at another school quickly. Nate is good people.

I know a 6'10 kid named Chase Almen committed, dont know where he is from or if he is any good but wheaton could use the size. I have heard of another guard transfer with Garriott from a D3 school but again there is always lots of transfer talk in D3, ill be convinced when i see them in a uniform.

Off bball topic... looks like Wheaton has hired a wrestling head coach with a serious resume.  Hopefully he'll take a program that has had some very, very talented individual wrestlers, but not a overly strong program to the next level - just as Wheaton's baseball team has become very competitive the past 2 years.

YIKES!  If those stats are right, ZERO steals and assists!  34% shooting (20% on 3-pointers, and almost 30% of his attempts were 3s, which seems awfully strange for a 6'10" hs player).  He did have 4.3 rpg (though that still seems pretty meager for his size).

Would seem to be a project, at best.  But as the cliche goes, you can't teach height.

Just under 900 students in 9th-12th.

That would only be 3A in Texas.

Yeah, you are right.  Quite a project.  I wonder if he has had AAU experience.

It's difficult for even an accomplished, skilled high schoool low-post player to come into the CCIW and make an impact.  IWU 6-9 freshman Eric McCullough averaged 13.3 ppg and 6.2 rpg as a senior at Normal U High...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yR1tF7Y8ltI&feature=related

McCullough had legitimate offers from a number of low DI schools and was aggressively pursued by multiple CCIW schools and D2's.  He was hurt most of the year (and has had off-season surgery), but it was still pretty clear he wasn't ready to compete at the CCIW level as a freshman and that he'll have to improve a lot to be ready as a sophomore.

I've never seen Chase Almen play obviously, but a 6-10 kid who averaged 3.8 ppg in high school seems to be a long, long way from being a varsity player in the CCIW.

CCIW is far more competitive than TCCC where Schauer coached. The talent level is more advanced quite significantly.

But don't think Schauer doesn't know this. He has a knack for developing bigs. Granted, I can only use the test cases provided during his stint at Gordon. Still, the team had progressed from being outrebounded nightly to this past season when they pretty much owned the boards. They were able to consistently get second-chance shots against teams like William-Patterson, Bates, MIT, etc...

Again, the competition Gordon faces is inferior to that of CCIW teams. Still, I think he understands the importance of size and he has experience developing what talent exists.

Think of it like Mark Mangino at Kansas football. He has taken highly underrated high school players and developed a solid program. (See Todd Reesing, Kerry Meier, Darrel Stuckey, etc.)

I highly doubt that anybody thinks that Schauer is unaware that the CCIW is a much tougher league than the CCC. Even those who read this room who weren't around when Schauer was an assistant coach at Wheaton have been made aware that he not only played there under Bill Harris, but coached there as well after his playing days were done. It's been mentioned over and over again in this room ever since Harris announced his retirement. Plus, it featured prominently in the front-page story on the site that Pat posted when Schauer was hired.

In other words, it's safe to say that Schauer's familiarity with the CCIW is common knowledge.

As a former wrestler at Wheaton, and a fan of wrestling in general, this is a great hire.  Jim's wrestling pedigree is great, and he most certainly fits along with Wheaton's Christian beliefs.  He was a coach at the USOEC at Northern Michigan.  Very, very good hire for the Thunder.

Wheaton posters----

Good odds for a starting 5 of Garriott, Panner, Carwell, McCrary, & Jahns?

Assuming Garriott has indeed committed to Wheaton (and I'm putting my faith in Q's source here)...

This is entirely speculation on my part, but I can't really see Carwell starting at center. He's an excellent role player and was a huge asset when complementing an established center (like Wiele this past year), but doesn't strike me as the type of defender to handle post duty. However, Wheaton might just go with 2F/3G, since I'm not completely sure who else Wheaton would play in that position. It really comes down to the tone coach wants to set. Spencer Schultz has the best body for the post, but has a lot of work to do to be ready for varsity. Does anyone know if Brad Smith is returning for the Thunder?

AndOne, I think your starting 5 is solid, but I wouldn't be surprised if Wheaton tries to develop a big and bring Jahns off the bench. Perhaps...

G Garriot
G Panner
F McCrary
F Carwell
C Smith or Shultze

Just a note of interest... Wheaton could potentially have 3 transfers in the starting lineup next season with Garriot, Panner and Carwell.

Being a Lisle native that teaches in the area-I saw Carwell play at Benedictine after a freshman medical redshirt year, he was a captain, go to big man who average what had to be close to 12 and 8 his first full year.  (Cant find the stats online would love to know for sure) I think he was an Honorable mention in the prestigious NAC  ;) Transferring to wheaton he took a job as a role player behind All-American talent, but 2 years experience in the league(as well as all the national tourney experience) makes him ready for the 5 position. He has made strides in the last two years and imho is the toughest kid on the floor most nights. Panner has hit big shot after big shot and will be ready to be a spotlight player. Carwell and Panner are 5th year players, Jahns with 2 big years of experience with McCrary as an a new comer of the year and Garriott bringing a lot to the table, Wheaton has to be in the running if not favored to win the conference again. Wheaton will be long, athletic and fun to watch, which bodes well for the defensive minded Wheaton. looking forward to following them again. Just noticed they play at Wash U early in the season. that should be an intense any non-conference game as any. Will be a good indicator of what level a non-kent raymond Wheaton team can play at.

Wheaton also returns Flederer, who is no slouch. They should be good.

Any word on who else will join Schauer on the staff?
