To all you Thunder fans out there, your recruiting won't miss a beat.  Mike Schauer can recruit as well as any one at the Division 3 level.  He played for 2 years, and coached for 7 years under Bill Harris.  We hated to see him leave Gordon, but those of us closest to him and the program know it was the right move for him and definitely the right choice by Wheaton.  Best of luck to you guys...although you won't really need it.

Congratulations to Chris Edquist, who was just named North Park assistant men's basketball coach, replacing Steve Schafer, who moved on to Benedictine.  Chris was a four-year starter for the Vikings and brings a strong work ethic, a solid understanding of the nuances of the game, and a positive attitude to the Viking bench.  He's also a great guy!  Best wishes, Chris!!

I was wondering when this would hit d3hoops.com...congrats to my friend Chris!

It's going to be a little lonelier over in Old Main.

My congratulations to him as well. "Cousy" is a good man. You could tell from his demeanor, style, and work ethic as a player that he had the makings of a future coach. Having said that, his coaching resume to date is fairly thin. However, I suspect that this was overcome in the hiring process by his personal virtues -- his intelligence, knowledge of the game, unflappable nature, and willingness to work hard -- and by the fact that he was an admissions counselor at North Park and thus has a thorough knowledge of the sort of student-athlete that NPU can and ought to recruit.

He also brings the interesting perspective of being intimately familiar with the NPU men's basketball program without actually having been personally involved with it over the past half-decade. Instead, he's sat in the stands as a fan with Rob Berki and I and endured our nonsensical in-game commentary. I only hope that we haven't eroded his basketball acumen too badly. ;)

OK, I'm officially having to deal with my own mortality.

Farrah Fawcett, less than 18 months older than me, dead at 62 from cancer.  (She was the ONLY reason to watch Charlie's Angels, though I usually still didn't. ;))

Michael Jackson, over a decade younger than me, dead at 50 for so far undisclosed reasons (an 8-year-old finally fought back?).

I guess I'd better call my folks (90 and 91, less than 2 months from their 68th wedding anniversary) to see how worried I should be. ;D

(Apologies to Farrah, who died way too young.)

Don't forget Ed McMahon....famous people always die in 3's and he was only a little younger than you. :)

Greg: yeah, I guess all the Angels were hot, but the show was still bad.  They just hadn't caught on to the Baywatch technique for soft-core porn! ;)

USee: now that was cold. :P  Ed was only 4 years younger than my dad. :D

A Beastly game in Chicago: Cubs and Sox tied 6-6 after 6.

Mr. Ypsi

Three deaths last week of people who probably SHOULD have been famous.  Who can identify John F. Mitchell (81), John Houghtaling (92), or Hortensia Bussi (94)? ;)

And RIP, Kodachrome, killed off by Eastman Kodak at age 74.

I'll admit I had to google all three of 'em.

Not to interrupt this week's death watch/Charlie's Angels retrospective, but I made a couple of additions to the recruit list and added some info.

Carthage Baseball pitcher Sam Schissel, 1990-2009

By Steve Marovich - Carthage College Sports Information

Sam Schissel
Carthage College baseball pitcher Sam Schissel (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) died on June 27 at his home in Somers, Wis., following a 10-day illness with flu or pneumonia-like symptoms.  The left-handed pitcher, who would have celebrated his 19h birthday on June 28, sat out the 2009 season after transferring from the University of Minnesota in January 2009.

Schissel was named 2008 Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association first-team all-state and first-team All-Southeast Conference on a Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 1 state-championship team.  He compiled an 8-0 record with a 1.88 earned run average in 15 appearances and eight starts.  Schissel attended Park High School in Racine, Wis., his junior year and was named first-team all-conference with a 3-2 mark and a 1.33 ERA.

"Sam was a very talented pitcher, a great competitor, and we considered him a part of us," said Carthage coach Augie Schmidt IV.  "For a kid who never played in the program, he touched a lot of people.  He was a kid you couldn't help but like.  We are shocked and real saddened.  He had so much left to do."

"The Carthage athletic department and the baseball program are deeply saddened by this tragic news," said Carthage Director of Athletics Robert Bonn.  "I first met Sam when he was working on his transfer from the University of Minnesota.  He was so happy to be back in Kenosha and to be a part of the Carthage baseball team.  He had a special relationship with Augie Schmidt and pitching coach Cory Everts and was really looking forward to pitching for the Red Men.  Sam had amazing athletic talent, but I was struck by his outgoing and fun-loving personality. He made more friends in a month than most students do in their four years. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sam's family."

Tragic.

In Fall 08 a female senior student athlete at my son's high school inexplicably died of pneumonia.
