Dansand, Not sure Guzamn will be going to CC. I am not saying he won't end up there but it is not a done deal either. He played with Moraine Valley in a summer league this past Sunday, Danville won't release him from his letter of intent so he can't go to Moraine, and I heard from a very relieble source that he is looking at Chicago State. He has changed his mind many times and has some issues at home to deal with so I am not sure he definitely will be at Carthage although he could be..

If that turns out to be wrong, it's on me...Dan was just responding to my post.  I was told Guzman has been playing with a Carthage summer team and will be playing for Bosko this winter.

Guzman has not been playing on the Carthage team in the Deerfield league.
However, Carthage continues to field a team in the old Des Plaines Summer League which every other CCIW team has left. Prior to moving its "A" team to Deerfield, Carthage had 2 teams in Des Plaines. The 2nd team was usually comprised mainly of guards, few of whom ever wound up seeing any appreciable court time on the varsity level at Carthage. They usually finished last or close to last in the league. If Guzman has been associated with Carthage this summer, it has to be through the CC team in Des Plaines. The best source of info might be someone associated with Elmhurst as the Elmhurst alums dominate the 6 team Des Plaines league.

I watched Guzman play for Carthage with two other new recruit as well as Cody Hilton and Adam Tolo last week in the Joy of the Game league in Deerfield.  Bosko and assistanct coach Dave Roehl were there watching the game as well.  It certainly appeared and sounded as though Guzman was in the Carthage fold that night.  Things can change, but he played the entire game for Carthage.

Pete--

I have not seen Guzman playing with the CC team on nights when I have been at Deerfield and Carthage was playing during the time I was there. However, you can't get much better evidence than an eyewitness account of his participation which you have provided. Sure sounds like he will be on board with Carthage this year. Thanks for the confirmation.

AO, hopefully he will be playing for Carthage just to make things more interesting up in Kenosha and in the CCIW, but after reading that he played for Moraine Valley the same week, and can't even get released to play there during the year, it makes me wonder whether he'll play wherever he can get a game.  It sounded like he was headed for Carthage and I know that he also has played with them in the Des Plaines league at times this summer, so he seems pretty invested in being a part of the program.

Well, I don't think one JC not releasing him to play at another JC would  affect his status at Carthage, but it does seem odd that he would in effect "sign on" with Carthage by playing with their summer team(s), but yet also "attach" himself to Morraine. As I reported above, if this kid does end up in Kenosha, there is a distinct possibility Bosko and his staff will encounter off the court difficulties with him. Getting him from matriculation to graduation will be a delicate and difficult process.

In making that statement I want to make it clear that the basis for my analysis is information from not one, but two impeachable sources that could not possibly be closer and more familiar with Raul Guzman. He can play basketball. Hopefully he will mature and grow off the court as well. As I said earlier, good luck to him.

I'll have a recruiting update for NPU later tonight, but I'll also briefly announce that, for the first time that I can remember, North Park will have a graduate assistant coach on staff this year. It's Steve Schweer, former backup forward for Illinois Wesleyan. Having a GA with the program should be a nice development, especially one who has recent CCIW experience. Welcome to the Park, Steve, and feel free to make a bonfire of your green clothing. ;)

I'll get to some of the NPU freshmen who have put in their deposits tomorrow, but the Vikings will also have three transfers (as of now) entering the program. One I'll bypass in favor of letting another CCIW Chat regular make the announcement. The other two are 6'1 sophomore combo guard Davone Robinson, who hails from Senn by way of UW-Eau Claire (where he saw limited action as a freshman two seasons ago) and 6'2 junior shooting guard Shaun Collins, younger brother of North Park's former All-CCIW second-teamer Jason Collins. Both are expected to contend for playing time in the backcourt this coming season. Also, in addition to the previously-mentioned 6'5 forwards who are returning after a year's hiatus, Jorge Gonzalez and Nick Hoekstra, 6'7 forward Christian Alsing will also be rejoining the team after sitting out last season.

Thanks Greg. Yes, my son, Magnus Sand, will be transferring to NPU from the Uppsala Weightlifting Academy. He's a 5'6", 283-pound power forward...not really much of a scorer...very effective pick-setter, though.

...just kidding. I'm not even Swedish.

I'll add Robinson to the list. Already had Collins on there.

Just reading DanSands yucu yuck referring to Uppsala Weightlifting - reminds me that an opponent of RPI when I played in late 60's, early 70's was Upsala College from New Jersey - I remember beating them and I THINK they might have made one of the first NCAA D3 tourneys in the mid 70's - The school went under in the mid 90's, but I dont remember them playing basketball very far into the 80's
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

Yup,

North Park beat Upsala 83-76 in the 1980 national championship game at Augustana.

Upsala made a lot more than one D3 tourney, Hopefan. At one time the Vikings participated in seven straight D3 tourneys (1978-84), which stood as a record for quite awhile. They were among the national powerhouses of the east in D3's early days, alongside Potsdam State, Albany State, Mass-Dartmouth, Clark, and New Jersey City. Upsala also made the 1986 tourney.

The 1980 Upsala team that Dan mentioned as having lost to North Park's Harper, Greer, Thomas & Co. in the national championship game was quite a team in its own right. It had one of the best inside-outside combos I've ever seen in Steve Keenan and Elonya "Tiny" Green. Upsala made a second appearance in the Final Four in 1984, finishing fourth.

Upsala College, which along with North Park and Augustana was one of a small handful of American colleges founded by Swedish immigrants, closed its doors in 1995.

Yup,

Upsala was an ELCA school and my boss at the time was a past president of capital University (OH) and the former boss of Upsala's last president, who tried valiantly to save the school.  The ELCA Mission Investment Fund finally called in their loans and still lost close to a million dollars when the school folded.  Even at its best the East Orange, NJ, school was never located in a good neighborhood.

The previous president was chastised for Upsala being one of the few D3 schools ever to get the NCAA "Death Penalty" because of basketball infractions.  The recap of Upsala's infractions took up a whole page of agate in the NCAA News - but briefly amounted to giving free-rides to basketball players.  The school granted its basketball players whatever financial aid they were entitled to and then charged the players the rest - however the school, with the president's supposed knowledge, never made any attempt to collect the outstanding balances from the players.
