Q, with great trepidation, I'm stepping in on your debate with AO. ;)

I think(?) AO's main point was not that Johnson was a disappointment, but surprise that you think he will be beaten out as a starter.  (You already partially addressed this point by saying you think Zimmer and Johnson will both be 20+ minute players.)  Is there anything besides the height advantage that leads you to the conclusion for starting role?

[BTW, I'm guessing AO slightly mis-spoke about the 'hype entering the league' - I'm guessing he was referring to the (deserved) hype by part-way thru his freshman year.  I haven't gone back to check, but I don't recall much hype before his freshman year.]

Exactly, Mr. When I 1st saw TQ had left Johnson out of his projected starting lineup, I was initially very surprised. I'm not saying Johnson is a bad player by any means. Just so we're straight here is what I do think.
1. The main "hype" I remember was probably Bob's when Sean was announced as a Wesleyan recruit. Not even he can deny there is nobody in all of D3Hoopsland that so vociferously trumpets, and forecasts lofty accomplishments for, his school's recruits as Bob.  And as both an alum and strong supporter, thats how it should be.
2. I don't believe he deserved the all conference selection following his freshman year. I think his selection was more a result of his team's 2nd place finish than his individual accomplishment as good as it was. That also is not to say he is a bad player. However, there is no doubt at least one player (Matt Rogers) who didn't make all conference deserved it more than Sean. On the other hand maybe he deserved it more than another player who also made the 3rd team.
3. If a player makes all conference his 1st year, starts in his 2nd year but doesn't come close to making all conference again, and then isn't even projected as a starter in his 3rd year by someone who should know--I'd say he has regressed. In Bob's own words above "Johnson did not take that step forward that you hope a player does from his freshman year to sophomore."
4. Maybe its just me, but Johnson's court demeanor and attitude seem, at least at times, to go beyond confidence. I've definitely seen him sneer/smirk at other teams/players who either had less wins than his team or inferior stats than his. Also, I haven't been thrilled with the fist pumps I've seen him display more than a few times. Yes, Sean, that was a nice shot, now go back and play some defense.  And you bet I'd tell the same thing to a player on the team I root for if I saw/see him exhibiting the same behavior!
JMHO, and I think this case s/b closed.

Just as a follow-up on the Ryan Beigie conversation, I don't mean for my comments to be taken as a putdown of Beigie. He's a solid player who got a lot of minutes as a freshman who will, I suspect, contribute a lot to the North Park program over the next three seasons. But, based upon what I've seen and heard, I think that he's going to have an uphill fight to make his way into the rotation in 2009-10.

I dunno. Bob does do those things, but there are other posters who are known for hyping their school's recruits. There's fcnews for Fontbonne over in the SLIAC room, for example, and there are several Hope and Calvin fans who really know how to work the room when it comes to recruit boosterism. A couple of the Wooster guys certainly know how to talk up their incoming freshmen as well. And there are lots of other examples I could name. As you said, there's nothing wrong with any of that. You and I and Dan do it to at least some degree for NCC, NPU, and Augie, respectively, too, although we may not be as interested in projecting future performance levels for recruits as Bob is. The main difference with Bob is that he tends to bring a lot more info to the table in terms of a recruit's high school background than do most of the other people who're touting their school's recruits on the message boards.

I thought that there was a good case to be made for Rogers, and I also thought that Jason Gordon should've made the team ahead of Johnson, too. I had several bones to pick with that year's team, and those were among them. But, as both you and Bob pointed out, the long-established m.o. of the CCIW's coaches is to pick All-CCIW teams based in large part upon how the teams finish, and selecting Johnson for the third team was a nod in the direction of the league's second-place finisher, IWU. I've never really had a problem with that policy of the coaches, since it reinforces the truism that basketball is a team game and it ever-so-slightly shifts the emphasis off of the individual, even though the All-CCIW team is in fact a set of fifteen different individual awards.

I haven't noticed that, but maybe it's just a case of which particular IWU games the two of us are seeing. Then again, I don't really pay much attention to a player's woofing and/or grandstanding unless it's really blatant.

Here is the direct quote of what I posted when Sean Johnson committed to IWU in April of 2007...

A bit of recruiting news...

All-state shooting guard Sean Johnson (6-1) from Washington H.S. has decided to attend Illinois Wesleyan.  I think Sean will be a very good CCIW player.  Here is a feature from the January 29 edition of ILL. Hoops magazine, courtesy of publisher Scott Powers...

http://www.iwuhoops.com/sj.pdf
(pages 4-7)

This year Johnson really stepped out of the big shadow of teammate Matt Roth (being recruited by Northwestern, ISU, Bradley, SIU, and others). Johnson averaged 18.3 ppg for a team that was ranked #2 in Class AA for a large portion of the year. In his final game, he scored 35 points (20 in the 4th quarter) vs Peoria Richwoods in the sectional championship, almost leading his team back from a huge deficit. He made the 5-man Journal Star All-star team, ahead of at least one Division I recruit (Justin Dehm, Richwoods H.S. - Furman).

Johnson received significant interested from D1 Eastern Illinois and a few other low D1's and several Missouri Valley schools talked to him about walking-on. He was also recruited pretty heavily by a number of D2 schools, including SIU-Edwardsville.

Ron Rose and staff have found a good player here.

I'm very comfortable with what I said...Sean Johnson is a good player.  And he has had a good first two years in the CCIW.

My projection of who will start at the 2 for the Titans has way more to do with positive thoughts about Jordan Zimmer than it does negative about Sean Johnson.  Both have potential to be very good Division III shooting guards.  My thought is, simply, that Zimmer is a really good shooter too (53-104 3-pt on the season as a freshman), but is 4-5 inches taller.  I can easily see him winning an intense preseason competition...but  I can also see Johnson winning that battle.  Like I said, either way, both are going to play a ton for the Titans in 2009-10.  (Zimmer's minutes can also come at the 3.)

Having seen every IWU conference game in 2008, I would have considered it a crime had Johnson not made that 3rd Team All-CCIW selection.  He made big shot after big shot late in games that season and helped the Titans finish 2nd in the regular season and 2nd in the conference tournament.  His play was instrumental in 3 victories over Kent Raymond and Wheaton, and in several other IWU wins.  And again, if you look at the stats of players from 2nd place teams who make the all-conference team, they're right in line with Johnson's from 2008.

LEB2 is the same league Adam Dauksas and Keelan Amelianovich (both IWU '06) played in.  They were with Sedesa Lliria (Lliria, Spain).  Dauksas only played a couple months, but Amelianovich played a couple full seasons if I recall.

Keelan told me the league, overall, is similar to a low D1.  There are American players who are from the low D1 to mid-major level, but also some players who are the caliber of, say,  a 2nd Team All-CCIW player.

Here are some clips of Amelianovich from game action over there if you want to get a little sense of what it's like...

As long as he's not in a Wheaton uniform, I wish Kent Raymond luck wherever he plays.

I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

I liked NP's Sean McNamee though he didn't seem to suit up on a consistent basis.

Elmhurst has 13 recruits on the list!?

Mark--

I'm not sure Sean McNamee is playing this year. I didn't see him all summer at Deerfield, and haven't heard anything about him. I asked Greg if he knew if he was going to play, and he had no idea either. I hope he does. Good kid, and his parents are top notch people as well.

And yes, it appears Elmhurst does indeed have 13 new players. I wonder if any of them realize they can't all play at the same time. Especially when you add the returnees in.   :o
Digger Doyle might have a hell of a JV team. Perhaps on par with Augie's!   :-\

IWU's lineup:

Travis R. (1 or 2)
Sean J.  (1 or 2)
Jordan Z. (3)
John K. (3 or 4)
Doug S. (5)

1st guard sub: Sean D. (1 or 2)
1st post sub: Ryan C. (5) (best post hands in CCIW but still needs to run the floor better to earn a starting spot) (Big Country has improved tremendously!)

Travis and Sean play too good together to split up.  Plus Jordan's natural position is a 3.

CCIW Coaching News

Congrats to Chad Murray on his appointment to the head coaching position at Cornell (IA) College of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference effective today. Chad has served as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator for the North Central Cardinals for the last 5 years under head coach Todd Raridon. He will certainly be missed at NCC.
A search for Chad's successor is underway.

The Cornell posting appears below:

I am a Kohawk alum having played during 1967-70.  The Rams have hired a really good man!  Good luck in the Iowa Conference!

North Park has a weak non-conference schedule, no two ways about it. Only three of the eleven opponents that the Vikings will face in November and December posted winning records last season: MSOE, Carroll, and Whittier. I don't think that many of the other eight will be substantially improved, although the folks in the WIAC room seem to think that UW-Superior should be very good in 2009-10. In North Park's defense, however, three teams who would've definitely upgraded this slate (Loras, Edgewood, and Concordia WI) with whom NPU currently has multi-year contracts were unable to settle upon a mutually convenient date with NPU, forcing the schools to shelve their contract with North Park for this season. That also forced Paul Brenegan to go about seeking opponents at a fairly late date, which explains why the likes of East-West and TIU are on the sked.
