Inquiring minds want to know:

!. Are they still in school?
2. If so, anyone know why they're not playing?

With Pflederer, I heard it was to concentrate on academics (I think he is pre-med).

Congrats to Todd Kelly who has been named the new top assistant basketball coach for the North Central Cardinals. In addition to his regular practice and game duties, Kelly, a former CCIW player at Millikin, will oversee the Cards recruiting program.
The North Central release can be viewed by clicking on the link below.

Todd's also a former CCIW Chat regular, back in the early part of the decade when we would at least get some sporadic participation from Millikinites.

Todd did a very fine job as the head coach at Providence-St. Mel, a program that had fallen upon hard times until he arrived. Congrats to him on his hire as NCC's assistant coach, and I'd like to wish him good luck for 363 out of 365 days a year.

So nice of you to root for the Thunder at least twice a year....  :P

How soon before people pontificate about conference standings?  I simply can't remember from previous years...  Once practice starts?  Once games start?  Once the pre-conference schedule is mostly finished?

What were the final CCIW standings last season?

1. Wheaton 11-3 (26-4)
2. Elmhurst 10-4 (20-8)
3. Augustana 9-5 (18-8)
4. North Central  8-6 (16-10)
5. Carthage 7-7 (15-10)
6. Millikin 6-8 (16-9)
7. Ill. Wesleyan  5-9 (13-12)
8. North Park  0-14 (8-17)

CCIWFAN3

I know Elmhurst lost their two leading scorers, and Wheaton their leading scorer. Auggie is about the same.  What did Carthage and IWU gain to bump them from #5 and 7 to #1 and 2?

CCIWFAN3

Wheaton lost their all conference 5 man and leading rebounder.  Why do you have them ranked at #3?  Also I heard Auggie has three 6'7" plus freshmen.

2009-10 Returning Points/Rebounds/Assists (CCIW-only stats from 2009)

Wheaton – 47% points, 58% rebounds, 72% assists
Elmhurst – 47% points, 53% rebounds, 70% assists
Augustana – 36% points, 40% rebounds, 43% assists
North Central – 30% points, 38% rebounds, 23% assists
Carthage – 90% points, 78% rebounds, 78% assists
Millikin – 61% points, 74% rebounds, 57% assists
Illinois Wesleyan – 90% points, 94% rebounds, 98% assists
North Park – 98% points, 95% rebounds, 99% assists

CCIWFAN3

So if IWU has over 90% of there returning points/assists/rebounders and they finished 7th what did they gain to get them from #7 to #2.....same with Carthage...#5 to #1?  And if Wheaton lost over 50% of their points why are they still so high? I'm just curious what was added to each team to make them that much better or worse from last year.  I can see Auggie, N.P. and Millikin finishing the same.

For me, it really has nothing to do with what Carthage and IWU gained.  It has to do with what last year's best teams lost...

Wheaton - Kent Raymond*, Andy Wiele*
Elmhurst - Brent Ruch*, Ryan Burks*, Robert Strzemp*
Augustana - Brett Wessels*, Jordan Delp, Chandlor Collins*, Alex Washington, Justin Bertrand
North Central - Chris Drennan*, Matt Rogers*, Mitch Raridon

* = all-CCIW in 2009

Last year the four "oldest" teams finished in the top 4 and the four "youngest" finished in the bottom 4.  This season, that picture changes quite a bit with natural player transition.

In my opinion...

* Steve Djurickovic is good enough, with the help he does have around him, to lead Carthage to the 2010 title
* IWU has the most depth and balance returning and will finally trot out a "veteran" squad again (after 2 years of being very young).
* Wheaton should be very good again behind developing star Tim McCrary...and helped by the additional of D1 transfer Aaron Garriott to replace Raymond.
* Augustana is always good and they have plenty of talent to contend.
* North Park could be a huge sleeper - the Vikings have a ton of talent this year and it seems to be spread out across all 5 positions.

(I don't know what to make of Elmhurst, NCC, and Millikin at this point.)

Longtime lurker...new poster

1.  IWU
2. Carthage
3. Wheaton
4. Augustana
5. NP

I don't  see any of the remaining teams challenging for the top 4 spots

CCIWFAN3

TitanQ's logic makes sense.  There will be a lot of good guard play this year, but the key will be rebounding and FT's.  Of the top 4...the team that shoots 75% from the FT line and wins on the boards will win the conference.  Those are the 2 keys to winning the CCIW.

This league has been (and in my humble opinion always will be) about quality of coaching and the ability of that coach to build a sustainable program that attracts quality talent - returning stats don't mean a thing if they were wrung up the previous year on a non-competitive team.

go ahead berki zap my karma - just proves that my point hits close to home (and the truth).

I would be over-joyed to be proved wrong - but I'm not betting my mortgage on a contending season.
I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.
