Better add a few things to a low post player's resume that is transferring from ACC or Big 10...7'0",  can shoot the 3, and can handle the ball.  Of course Greg and titanQ probably haven't seen many of those...except maybe on ESPN.

Gregory Sager

I haven't even seen many players like that in the NBA, let alone the ACC or the Big Ten.

just at first glance, I'd say it's going to be tough for Wheaton to replace Wiele's 840 rebounds per game.

they should try to lure a few players away from Grinnell.  In that system, 840 rpg probably isn't unrealsitic.

CCIWFAN3

Go to a game in person sometime...they are on most teams.

Gregory Sager

Seven-footers who can shoot the trey and handle the ball? Not as many as you think, CCIWFAN3.

(And I sincerely apologize to the CCIW Chat readership for breaking one of my own cardinal rules, which is to refuse to discuss the NBA in this room. :D)

With all TitanQ's and Sager's experience and knowledge about basketball, it just overwhelms me.  I just don't feel qualified.   I only have 3 years junior high, 9 years high school, 10 years AAU, and 2 years college coaching experience.  I wish I was as qualified as you two.  I feel so outmatched.

Several CCIW coaches warned me not to read the CCIW posts...only the CCIW.  But I didn't listen.  I don't remember their exact quotes, and I'm not even attempting to quote anyone or Sager will be all over that.  But I do recall their body language...rolling their eyes and shaking their heads, etc.

So, I'll leave the predicting to you experts.  I'll just go back to reading my Sports Illustrated while you continue ranking your favorite team and it's players very high, and evaluating IBCA Class 1A honorable mention players.

I know when I'm licked:)

Gregory Sager

Aw, c'mon, CCIWFAN3. Don't give up so easily. It's always great to have a new and enthusiastic voice in this room. I've enjoyed sparring with you, and I hope to have lots of chances to do so again in the future. You obviously haven't been here long if you think that we're all just one big amen corner, as the regulars here go at it with each other pretty frequently. In other words, it's not a matter of the old guard ganging up on the new guy.

As for the CCIW coaches rolling their eyes at us, well, that's the nature of coaches everywhere in every sport, is it not? The only voices that many of them take seriously are those of their peers within the coaching fraternity. We understand that here, and we're not offended by it.

As for your qualifications, however, I'd suggest that pulling rank is not the best way to make an argument. The optimal way to prove a point is to argue by facts, not by credentials. You can have twenty years' worth of coaching experience, and that still won't make you right if you argue that Doug Sexauer was IWU's center last season rather than its power forward.

7 footers who can handle the rock and shoot the 3? I can't think of a lot of them at any level....KG I guess..ummm...somebody help me out.

With there being exactly zero 6'10" players in the CCIW "roster" last year, there clearly were no 6'10" stong, athletic players either.  There also were zero 6'10" players (and thus zero 6'10" strong, athletic players) in the All-region team too.

So, they must have been able to use both hands.

I think the ability to be All-Region certainly has to do with ones own ability... but it also has to do with the other top-notch players in the region.  If there aren't a ton of great ones, then the "competition" won't be as high for a spot.  Also, if there aren't a ton of great ones, then the ones who ARE good will likely have better stats, as they're not going up against behemoths every night either.

I think this may be a breakout year for Sexauer (and I haven't seen IWU play in, oh, I dunno... 15 years?).  He led his team in scoring last year and he's going to be a junior.  That makes him about 21 or so and his body will really be filling out.  This added strength will increase his rebounding totals next year and will likely equate to a few more points per game.  I think he'll step up and fill the void in the conference in terms of big men... and typically, the top CCIW big men are right up there with the tops in the region.

Dirk?  He might be 6'11"...   Kevin Pittsnogle who played at West Virginia is 6'11" too... Steven Novak is only 6'10"...

I posted these pics last season to highlight the significance of physical maturity...especially for a low-post player:.

Doug Sexauer as freshman (7.6 ppg, 3.1 rpg)

Doug Sexauer as sophomore (12.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg)

Doug will be a year older and stronger this season...at the same time, guys like 6-9 Brent Ruch, 6-8 Andy Wiele, 6-7 Chandlor Colllins, etc are gone.   I expect Doug to take another step up as a junior because of both factors.

Mr. Ypsi

Can't help on the 'handle the rock and shoot the 3', but as far as 'strong and athletic', ya think anyone in the CCIW would recognize Ben Strong if I get him a Titan jersey? ;D

Otherwise, as far as actual CCIW players, we surely have someone since Jack Sikma, don't we?  Would the NPU (then C) AA count (Michael Thomas? or was it Michael Harper?  I always forget which was the big guy. :-[)

Titan Q

A couple CCIW big guys I think are poised for breakout junior years...

* 6-9 Kyle Nelson from Augustana (listed at 6-9 now...wasn't he 6-7 just last year?)

* 6-7 Phil Schiedermeier from North Park

I won't be surprised if both end up being all-conference.

Titan Q

The November 15 IWU vs Benedictine game (season opener) has been moved from Lisle to Bloomington.  I guess BU is putting a new floor in and it will not be ready on 11/15.

Just FYI.

CCIWFAN3

Here we have some actual stats....not 7'0", but 6'7" is close:  1-9 from the 3 point line (shoots the 3), and 52 turnovers (2nd on the team)...so he must have at least tried to handle the ball.  So there you have it: a 5 man that shoots the three and handles the ball:)

He started 25 games ....Chamernik only started 14....O'Callaghan started 5.  So Doug did play the 5 spot quite a bit.  If not starting at the 5....he played a lot of minutes at the 5.

Notice the 2nd leading rebounder on the team...Koschnitzky....he will be playing the 4 and Zimmer starting at the 3.  K. is very physical and has quite a vertical too.  The three guards of Travis, Sean J, and Zimmer make a fine trio.  Zimmer has one of the best if not the best 3 point range in conference.  If there's a potential all region...look at the three guards.
