Nick Michael was skinny when he first got to Elmhurst.  But, if anybody still remembers, he was 6'10 240 by the time he was a senior.  That's hardly finesse.  In fact, I predict he would've led the league in rebounding if it wasn't for Chris Martin being his teammate for a couple of years, who was a tenacious rebounder himself.  And then his senior year was when Brent Ruch hit the league by storm.  It's hard to steal all the rebounds away from those two guys, I don't care who you are.  Anyway, he was in the double digits in total dunks his junior year and also his senior year.  Finesse?......kind of, but I would lean him more towards the power side, not a bruiser, but somewhere in between.

Michael was no bruiser. His game did not consist of muscling his opponent out of the way down in the blocks. No, he wasn't as skinny as some of the other players I listed, but he didn't rely upon bulk and sheer force. Also, rebounding isn't simply a matter of physical power -- it's about timing, leverage, quick feet, long arms, the ability to read shots, hustle, and desire. I can name a lot of great rebounders who weren't musclemen. In fact, it's often the musclemen who are the guys who do the boxing-out while the other guys get the rebounds.

Dunking's not about muscles, either.

Is that a Midnight Madness event, or is Giovanine simply taking advantage of the calendar to start his first closed-doors practice? Are any CCIW schools hosting a Midnight Madness event?

Heh! :D

[Morty and Helen's, Florida]

(Morty is fastening a jacket as he enters.)

MORTY: Alright, are you ready to eat?

HELEN: (glancing at her watch) Oh, right, let's go. Jerry, let's go, it's time
to eat. We're going to dinner.

(Jerry wanders into the room. He's in a t-shirt and sweatpants, and holding a
comic book he's been reading.)

JERRY: (confused) Dinner? Wh ... What time is it?

HELEN: (pulling on a coat) It's four-thirty.

JERRY: (bewildered) Four-thirty? Who eats dinner at four-thirty?

MORTY: By the time we sit down, it'll be quarter to five.

JERRY: I don't understand why we have to eat now.

HELEN: We gotta catch the early-bird. It's only between four-thirty and six.

MORTY: Yeah. They give you a tenderloin, a salad and a baked potato, for
four-ninety-five. You know what that cost you after six?

JERRY: Can't we eat at a decent hour? I'll treat, okay?

HELEN: You're not buying us dinner.

JERRY: (emphatic) I'm not force-feeding myself a steak at four-thirty to save a
coupla bucks, I'll tell you that!

HELEN: Alright, (sitting on the couch) we'll wait. (pointedly) But it's unheard
of.

(Jerry shakes his head, incredulous, and wanders away with his comic book.)

Wheaton's roster is posted. It appears to still be a work in progress.

It confirms that both Phil Carr and Jeremy Pflederer are not playing this year.

Newcomers include the transfer from SIU-Edwardsville Aaron Garriott, as well as freshmen Chase Almen (6-10, 245lbs) and Nate Serenius from Dayton, Ohio.

I also noticed Ben Cochran, who transferred from Greenville (IL) and Jeff Lake, who played Wheaton football.

No, he made it a point to emphasize that's it's not Midnight Madness, just a normal practice. Matter of fact, he told the guys not to expect "any music playing when you run out on the floor."

while a couple of them fell into the category of big bruisers for whom "athletic" would not have been the adjective of choice (Adam Rue of Augustana and Bill Bracksick of Illinois Wesleyan come to mind).

I'd throw Titan Hammer into this category too (even though he was only 6-7 and not the required 6-10)...bruiser for whom "athletic" would not have been the adjective of choice.
Not sure that I would throw myself into any of the categories rendered, but would catergorize myself as a "misfit" amongst the D3 ranks...considering my history.  Not really worthy of the discussion.

More to the point, will this year's version of the Titans challenge...and are there any new pieces to the puzzle?

Au contraire: Of the three CCIW basketball alumni named Mike Thomas, you're the one who comes closest to winning two of the three categories in the "6'10, strong, and athletic" sweepstakes. Of course, I don't think that your two namesakes are losing any sleep over it. ;)

I was going to complain about Mike Schauer adding two Swedish-Americans to the Wheaton roster, but since NPU has an actual Swede in its incoming freshman class, I'll let it slide.

Almen and Serenius are both Swedish names.

What is the timeframe for the first national poll and what CCIW teams might be included?

Drake Palmer

Hello CCIW posters - longtime lurker & occasional visitor on your board from MIAC land.

Earlier today on the MIAC board I posted the the 09-10 schedule for Hamline & noticed that Elmhurst is playing the 2nd half of a 2-year (?) home & away series with Hamline. The Hamline Pipers played a competitive game against Elmhurst last November, but lost by 5 points at Elmhurst.  Now Elmhurst will return the favor & make the trip to St. Paul, MN to play Hamline about a month from now.

Over the Xmas break, Hamline will play in the Cal Lutheran tourney in CA & will match up with Wheaton in their first game.  I realize that Elmhurst & Wheaton lost a lot of firepower due to graduation last year – Kent Raymond, Brent Ruch etc. but I'm wondering what the CCIW board experts are forecasting from those two teams this season?

Aside from the Hamline coaches, players & families, not many of us are really expecting much from Hamline this season.  Team rosters aren't posted yet, but If I had to take a semi-educated guess, I would project Hamline to finish anywhere from the 7th to 10 spot in an 11-team league this year.  Apparently they did land a talented D1 transfer, but they really don't have a lot of depth.  So those two non conference games could give us a sense of where this young squad may be at.

Thanks
