So Dan, is DeSimone expected to play the point this year, with Pelton the 2?  I picture Pelton as more of the "pure PG" and DeSimone as a "combo guard."

Will Pelton play more off the ball, or will the 2 starting guards be kind of interchangeable in their roles?

Jeff Skemp was just drafted with the 15th pick in the 6th round of the NBA Development League.  He goes to the Erie Bay Hawks (Cleveland and Toronto affiliates).

Good luck to Jeff in Pennsylvania

Thanks Bob.  I didn't even realize there were 6 rounds in that draft!  I'll have to check the league's website and see what other D3/NAIA type players get drafted into that league.  Good luck to Jeff.

Bob, I remember Brian from his days at Buffalo Grove as being a good, steady decision-maker with the ball in his hands.  Maybe that's what they're thinking/seeing with him at the point.

No, Brian will definitely be running the point primarily with Matt playing off the ball for the most part. How much Pelton plays at the point will depend on how effectively Drew Croegaert can step into that backup point guard role. I think Pelton has all the physical skills to be very good as a 2-guard. Good 3-point shooter, can put it on the floor and get in the lane, physical, can post up smaller guards. I think it's just a matter of him making the change in mentality from table-setter to scorer.

Well Augie, not surprisingly, got a good test up at Platteville last night. The Pioneers won both halves, 37-32 and 37-31.

The Vikings went with the starting lineup that I predicted to one of the parents earlier this week:

1. Brian DeSimone
2. Matt Pelton
3. Troy Rorer
4. George Dexter
5. Kyle Nelson

The offense is ahead of the defense at this point. I thought, for the most part, they executed the offense pretty well, getting the opportunities they wanted. Unfortunately they missed several layups in the first half and 10 free throws in the two halves combined. But, they shot 48% (only 1-for-8 from 3, though), got to the line 28 times, only turned it over 11 times and won the rebounding battle, 28-24.

Individually, Kyle Nelson had 15 and, like others on here have predicted, looks like he's going to have a big year. Troy Rorer had 13 and Matt Pelton had 10.

There's work to do defensively. UWP, who's very good and very experienced on the perimeter, was really efficient on offense, especially in the second half. UWP's Mike Shaw really lit it up in the first half with 17 points. He finished with 25. Curt Hanson and Nick Allen are very good also and were in double figures. With the loss of Jeff Skemp, the Pioneers don't have the post presence they had last year, but Eric Wall did a nice job inside for them. I think he had about a dozen points and nine boards. I think the Pioneers got all their points from six players.

All-in-all a great test. The youngsters looked great at times and like youngsters at others. No surprise there.

Dan, do you know what happened to Jon Demoss?   I noticed he was removed from Augie's roster page in the last week or so.

I think DeSimone will be a very good PG...especially as a JR and SR.  I guess I just assumed Matt Pelton would continue to play the position he has started at for two years now, and earned All-CCIW honors at last season.  I guess this is why Coach G has more CCIW titles than I do.

Great observation, and very good question. Hopefully Dan or one of the other Augie fans will have an answer for us. Very interesting.

WETN aired an interview with new Wheaton head coach Mike Schauer during halftime of the IWU/Wheaton football game.  He said if he had to play a game today, he'd start...

G - Andrew Jahns, 6-2 (Jr)
G - Stephen Pierotti, 6-1 (So)
G - Ben Panner, 6-3 (Sr)
F - Tim McCrary, 6-6 (So)
C - Jake Carwell, 6-7 (Sr)

Schauer said Aaron Garriott has been dealing with some kind of injury, and that as set him back.  He was clear to say the starting picture could change by the time Wheaton opens (11/20).

Wow! The possibility of Pierotti starting at the point is very surprising. In HS, he was a steady player but was greatly overshadowed by the 4 other starters, 3 of whom are playing college basketball (1 DI, 1 DII, & 1 DIII) with the other playing soccer at Wheaton. Pierotti was very lightly recruited and ended up at Wheaton mainly because his mom is an employee of the College. He played very sparingly last season. Wheaton must be very light in bench players if nobody on the roster has been able to beat him out for the backup PG position.

Well, that is Garriott's job as soon as he's ready.

I've been told that Garriott has some sort of a knee injury. Don't know how serious it is.

I wonder how the transfer from Greenville, Ben Cochran, fits into the guard picture for Wheaton? He was an All-SLIAC pick and the league's Newcomer of the Year two years ago for the Panthers.

Well, weatherwise it was the most glorious November day I can ever remember in Chicago, and I spent almost all of it in the crackerbox keeping score for two full men's scrimmages and one full women's scrimmage. I should have my head examined.

The first men's session was the North Park varsity against the Lake Forest varsity, two 20-minute halves. NPU won by a combined score of 66-50 (35-21 and 31-29). After the women's scrimmage, the North Park and Lake Forest junior varsities squared off in two 20-minute halves. This time Lake Forest came out on top, 82-71 (36-30 and 46-41), as the Vikings had some serious defensive issues.

That wasn't the case with the NPU varsity, though, which put in as solid a 40 minutes of defense as they've done in over a year. The offense was a little shakier, as the Vikings had a very tough time knocking down treys; however, Phil Schniedermeier, who led the way with 21 points, was absolutely dominant at both ends of the floor against a very big and mobile center, Lake Forest's Travis Clark. Nick Williams and Ro Russell scored ten and eight, respectively, and had their moments, but the player of the day was Davone Robinson (nine points). He had three steals that he converted into fast-break layups, and he grabbed an offensive rebound and turned it into a putback layup at the buzzer of the second half to provide the difference as NPU won that half by two.

Lake Forest is probably a bit less tough of an opponent than Benedictine, but not by much, so this was a big stride forward for the Vikings after last Monday's listless scrimmage against BU. If NPU can keep progressing at this same pace over the next week of practices, the Vikings should be in good shape for the opener at MSOE a week from Sunday.
