One of the better things about confining one's comments to an Internet board is that nobody else knows which finger is doing what. ;)

NPU is going to offer free live webcasts of all twelve home games this season. The webcasts will be archived as well, which means that everybody will be able to drive Mugsy crazy by screaming, "Look at the tape!" on CCIW Chat if there's a controversial call in a North Park game. Yours truly and Rob Berki will be the blithering idiots broadcasters for all twelve games. Tonight's 7:30 contest against Carroll will be the debut of this terrific new service for NPU and CCIW fans. Should be interesting. Click here for access.

In other words, you're going to show us now?!

Greg, welcome to the world of broadcasting.  I'm going to pass along the 5 most memorable pieces of advice my mentor, and good friend, Art Kimball gave me during our 5 seasons together on WJBC...

5. On pregame preparation – "Pronounce their names right – you never know when Aunt Sally is listening."

4. On establishing roles early on – "Q, you drive the car and I'll pay the bills."

3. During a 1st half commercial, suggesting possibly I was doing too much color commentary -- "Good analysis of the opening tip, Q...just try to get it back to me before halftime."

2. In a post-game meeting – "How bout you color commentate me up a Manhattan, Q."

1. In preparation for doing play-by-play -- "Time and score, Q...time and score."

IWU 78
Webster 49

* Jordan Zimmer: 16 points, 5 rebounds
* Ryan Connolly: 13 points
* Doug Sexauer: 12 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists
* Sean Johnson: 12 points, 3 assists

This was a very ugly game for the entire 1st half and about 5 minutes into the 2nd - IWU really had trouble scoring.  It sounded like the Titans played good defense in the 2nd half though and bought time for the offense to start clicking.  IWU eventually pulled away and opened up a large lead in the 2nd.  I'm guessing the Titans wore Webster down with their depth.

The Titans were led offensively by two sophomores - Jordan Zimmer (16) and Ryan Connolly (13).  Doug Sexauer had another good game.

Sophomore starter John Koschnitzky left 4 minutes into the game with a sprained ankle and did not return.  Jordan Zimmer took most of his minutes, starting the 2nd half.

The Titans held the Gorloks to 36% from the field.

Augie played really poorly but pulled out  a 66-53 win with a lot of late Augie FTs to stretch the margin of victory. A real nice effort by Beloit against an overconfident Augie team, that is not nearly ready for prime time. Pelton with 12 points and DiSimone with 10 lead Augie's lackluster scoring effort. Nothing much positive to say about this one.

From Chicago...

Carroll 87
North Park 75

I watched a lot of the North Park/Carroll game, which the Pioneers led by a comfortable margin the whole way.  Great live video streaming feature by NPU, by the way.  (And good job by Greg and Rob on the call.)

Carroll, picked 2nd in the MWC to St. Norbert, looked very solid.  North Park really struggled defensively tonight.  There were several times North Park scored, but did not cover a Carroll player on the other end and gave up an easy basket.  And in general, Carroll seemed to get good look after good look.

I left the webcast thinking Carroll is a good team and not real sure what to make of North Park...the Vikings clearly have a lot of talent, but they did not play well tonight.  (In addition to poor defense, the Vikings also missed a bunch of easy shots.)

Titan Q

Wow, just looked at the NPU stats...Nick Williams and zero points and 1 rebound.  He only played 13 minutes though...injury?

6. If you're going to use a former player as you color while doing play by play, make sure that if your color is on meds and had his wisdom teeth pulled recently...have it be somewhere (Foster and K in front of a packed house) where neither one of you can be heard very well, while on the university radio station.

Could this be the Gonzaga/Wash U factor as they weren't exactly impressive against Simpson either.

I didn't see this mentioned, but Mike Schauer was interviewed for the halftime of the Wheaton football game this past Saturday for the 2nd week in a row.  Here is what I remember:
1.  He seemed happier with his team's progression in practice.
2.  McCrary and Panner are clearly his two best players (not really news).
3.  He has four starters figured out (McCrary, Jahns, Panner, Carwell)  but isn't sure who will be the 5th starter.
4.  Candidates for the 5th spot are Spencer Schultze, along with Garriott and Pierotti.  Garriott and Pierotti both are dealing with injuries-  lately (last week) Garriott had been practicing and Pierotti had been out.
5.  He expects significant production out of Schultze in the next 3 years.
6.  David Eseke will be one of the first off the bench.
7.  He let Owen Handy vote in the coaches preseason poll and Owen picked IWU 1st.

I'm guessing it is the "4 new starters factor" more than anything.

Thanks for the advice, Bob. Rob and I got a huge kick out of the line about you getting Art his Manhattan.

The game was not a pleasant one to do from a North Park fan's point of view, but Rob and I had a lot of fun with it. I suppose that we sounded pretty rough around the edges, but we got lots of positive in-game e-mails encouraging us. Thanks to everyone who did so! With NPU's far-flung alumni base, these webcasts should be a real asset in keeping Parkers linked to the program from coast to coast.

Easily the best part of the night for me was my halftime interview with the legendary Michael Harper. While the circumstances behind his being in Chicago at the moment are unfortunate (Michael's mom just passed away), it was great fun to catch up with Harps on the air and to ask him some questions about the glory days of the national championship threepeat. He's just a great ambassador for North Park basketball and for the school in general. I encourage everyone to check out the interview in the game archive.
