Benedictine, who earlier played a game at College Of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, borrowed North Central's hanger this evening to defeat MSOE 72-67. On 12/13, they will play Edgewood in the Elmhurst gym. Previously, they moved a game against Wesleyan to Bloomington. These moves are necessary as a new wood floor is being installed at BU, replacing the hated torn ACL waiting to happen rubber floor they had for way too long.

IWU played its first game at the Shirk Center 15 years ago today...

Ahh, my first Titan game as a freshman at IWU.  Unfortunately, I never saw a game in Fred Young, but this was a heckuva way to start off 4 unbelievable years.  Wayne Messmer made it seem like we were big time D1 basketball, and Aubry was out of his mind that game.  Good times.
Hail, Hail, the gang's all here, all out for Wesleyan!

Careful, Mark ... the program you support was in BU's shoes not all that long ago. North Central had a rubber floor in the airplane hangar for many decades after the rest of the college basketball world had scrapped rubber or tile floors in favor of wood. NCC didn't install a wooden floor until sometime in the '90s.

The rubber floor in the hangar gave NCC a great homecourt advantage. Other CCIW players absolutely hated having to visit North Central, even when the Cardinals were bad, because: a) there was (and still is) no shooting background; and b) the rubber floor was totally alien -- it had poor traction, and it caused the ball to spin oddly coming up from the floor to the dribbler's hand.

Carthage 101
Indiana-Northwest 67

* Steve Djurickovic: 24 pts, 8 rebs, 10 asts
* Max Cary: 20 pts, 7 rebs, 7 asts
* Raul Guzman: 15 pts, 11 rebs
* Tyler Pierce: 11 pts, 7 rebs

A pretty predictable result.

While I can grasp your nostalgia, I have trouble really 'feeling' it.  I watched 40-50 games at Fred Young (ALWAYS sold out, and usually hotter than hell even if it was -10 outside), and spent hundreds of hours in PE classes, working out in the weight 'room' (balcony overlooking the bball court), and running the indoor 'track' (where I tore my Achilles' tendon approaching the NE corner - it NEVER healed correctly).  Fred Young was hopelessly outdated and had to go, but having only made it to Shirk twice, I almost miss the old barn! :P

Then fan or not, NCC prob had the crappy floor too long, and should have installed wood long before they did.

Here's a better version of that Sean Johnson halfcourt buzzer-beater vs Manchester (the video and audio is properly synched)...

An amazing shot indeed.  I have to think that even though Sean Johnson knows that it is a relatively low percentage shot, that he has practiced that shot before.

I like the sound of the arena buzzers.

Dennis_Prikkel

actually there were 3 rubber floors in the cciw at one time: North Central's, Augustana and Millikin (through much of the seventies and eighties).

I remember North Central having a raised floor over the dirt in Merner in Fieldhouse.  The dust was so thick it looked like the game was being played in a fog.  Lake Forest's old field house also had a wooden floor over dirt - same result.

Perhaps the most unique floor was in Augie's old gym.  It was a wooden floor over a swimming pool.  The place was always steamy hot.  And the visiting team had to dress in the weight room in the basement.

You're probably right.  This is a situation where goof around gym time really can pay off.  Though I've never heard of any other team that's done this, at UWSP, after our last practice before a game, we'd all go to half court and shoot on both ends until a shot was made on each end.  It paid off though... in the first national championship run of 03-04, we hit half court buzzer beaters going into half time in both the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 games.  And the Elite 8 game (the best game nobody saw, against Lawrence) went to OT, when we finally were able to get the better of them.

I remember playing there in high school in the late 90's in summer shootouts... and if you think playing on rubber is bad, try playing on a changing surface!  The courts went perpendicular to the current court configuration, so it would go from rubber to wood, back to rubber.  Really weird...!

Augie's old gym wasn't big enough to have been used in that movie - lol.

there were small portable bleachers on one side of the court, with the benches and scorers table on the other side - most fans sat on the track suspended from the ceiling.

I regret never having been in the old gym. Sounds like it was quite an interesting place. I think my first Augustana game was around 1974, so I missed it by about three years.

Most of the questions we have about this years Wheaton team will be answered in the next 7 days with this schedule:

12/2 v Chicago
12/4 @ Hope
12/5 v Calvin in Holland
12/9 @ Washington University

Combine that with a new year's tourney at Cal Lutheran and you have a pretty good pre-season schedule. ;)

Titan Q

Wheaton is definitely playing a great schedule.

Below is what I posted about CCIW non-conference schedules a few weeks ago.  I'd probably change a few things below now, but I think I'm still comfortable with the overall ranking of schedules...

Looking at CCIW non-conference schedules, and trying to evaluate who has the toughest and who the weakeast.

Everyone plays at least 4 "weak teams."  In an effort to rank the schedules, I threw out what I considered to be each team's worst 4 and evaluated based on the toughest 7 non-conference games.  Note, I did not do any research on these non-conference opponents, but just ranked based on what I know about each...I certainly could be off.  (I also had to make a few guesses with tournament pairings.)  But I came up with...

Wheaton (#1)
1 Wash U
2 Cal Lutheran
3 Ohio Northern or McMurry
