New Top 25:

Wheaton #8
Augie #15
Carthage #24

IWU drops out. Not much of a drop for Wheaton, which is kind of surprising.

The pollsters probably felt that the big win over ORV Chicago and Saturday's recovery triumph over a Calvin team that isn't drawing any votes but which still enjoys residual respect from everyone helped to somewhat offset the blowout loss to Hope on the Dutch's home floor.

Maybe, but anytime you get blown out like that, it's hard to think of that team as 8th best in the country.  Even without the blowout, I think a lot of us were questioning any CCIW team being that high in the poll at this point of this year.  Anyone dizzy from all the italics?

Number 8 in the country is too high for the Thunder.   That ranking is a residual from last year and underestimates the value of Kent Raymond.

Probably the first time I've seen University of Chicago and Off Road Vehicle in the same sentence.  Leave it to the resident wordsmith.

It's pretty rugged terrain down there in Hyde Park.

It's funny how everybody except for the pollsters, including Wheaton fans, seems to agree that Wheaton is not a top ten team. This may be a case in which pollsters who live nowhere near the team in question and who never get to see that team play are upholding that team on their ballots in spite of the fact that all of the people who get to see that team are calling them overrated, including that team's own fans.

The reason why I say that is because I'll bet all the corn in Manito that Bob does not have Wheaton in the top ten on his ballot.

Manito? Is that a town? I saw one of those in the Atlantic once.

Are you from Manito Greg?

Does anyone know if Augie is going to make it out of town on time today? I know that flights at O'Hare are delayed or cancelled, but I'm not sure about Midway. If you have Direct TV or Dish Network you can catch the game on television. It starts at 8:00 tomorrow night.

I have Dish.  What channel will they have the game on?

No. "I'll bet all the corn in Manito" is a long-standing expression on this board that dates back to the early part of the decade, when Elmhurst All-American and Manito, IL native Ryan Knuppel was a frequent topic of conversation and his father and younger brother were regular posters here.

(And BlueJay21 will attest that there is a lot of corn in Manito. ;))

People remarking about Wheaton's ranking should consider posting a list of 20 or so teams that are demonstrably better than Wheaton. I'm having a hard time deciding that when it comes to my ballot.

I agree Wheaton is too high. Who should be in all those spots above them and why?

This does not really relate to this year's Wheaton team, but the 2007-08 Thunder got whipped by Hope in the CCIW/MIAA Classic up at Calvin and still were able to end the season ranked #11.

Wheaton faces the ultimate measuring stick tomorrow at Wash U. That game will give us all a better idea of where the Thunder actually are. How do people think a legit #8 team would fare on the Bears home court? We can use that criteria to judge tomorrow's performance by Wheaton.

Are you joking me right now? After they lost kent caveman, Wheaton is certainly going downhill. Let's apply some basic 8th grade statistics (which I'm sure we all know):

Wheaton  <  Hope
Hope < Carthage

Therefore, Wheaton < Carthage.

Wheaton would not even be a top 8 team if they used 8 players!

Here is my list of 20:

Wash U
John Carroll
St. Thomas
Carthage
UW-Point
UW-Whitewater
Guilford
Middlebury
Dartmouth
Dallas
Chapman
Augie
Amherst
Brandeis
St. Norbert
Stockton
Bradford High School
Mississippi College
Bo's Elementary School

There's the rub.  They dropped an average of 4 and 1/4 slots... but there wasn't enough consensus as to who those 4 teams were.

What's interesting is that it was only an average of 4.24.  As you said, they dropped farther on your ballot...

But let's look at it deeper.

Week 1 480 points (good enough for 5th)
Week 2 374 points (good enough for 8th)

However, they averaged almost 7th on everyone's ballot last week and 11th this week.  The "problem" for those who feel that 8 is too high is that there isn't enough consensus among the top 25 voters for the 5 of the teams ranked ahead of them on the voters' ballots.  They were scattered around, and Wheaton slides in higher than their average ranking.

I had Wheaton #20 this week.

Interesting... but by the same method:

Carthage < Calvin
Calvin < Wheaton

Therefore, Carthage < Wheaton.
