Here's a what if question somebody asked me the other day and I didn't know how to answer. Last second scenario in a 1 point game. Shot is taken before the buzzer sounds but a goal tending occurs after the buzzer sounds. What is the ruling ??

So, for example, in the play below, if a Manchester player had jumped up and swatted the ball right at the rim??

That seems to be pretty obvious goal tending to me.  Right?

The Roop

That's what it sounds like to me but if it's after the buzzer the game is over and a penalty can't be called; as I understand it.....................  ???

But since the basket would have counted, you can't very well reward goal-tending.

The Roop

Ok, I will relay that information. And the reasoning is that the game is extended while the ball is in the air, fair enough.

I believe if the ball is completely out of the shooter's hand before the buzzer goes, the play is continuous until completed. Even though the buzzer goes while the ball is still in the air, the shot must still be afforded the same opportunity to be successful as any other shot. The defense does not have the right to interfere with any shot taken before time expires. Therefore, as long as the shot was released in time, goal tending could still be called even if the buzzer has sounded prior to said interference.

Mr. Ypsi

Bear in mind that I am NOT a trained official, but that seems common-sense to me.  Otherwise 'buzzer-beaters' would just about always be goal-tended.

Again, Phil Schniedermeier is not a reserve. He's an injured starter.

And when Schiedermeier resumes starting, I'll add him to the list...just as I'll do with John Koschnitzky and anyone else who has been out with injury.

It's not an anti-Schiedermeier conspiracy, I promise.

Never said it was. I simply said that he is not a reserve, yet you are listing him as one.

This is correct. Rule 5.7.3.a. of the NCAA Basketball Rules Handbook states:

QuoteArt. 3. Each period shall end when time expires except that:
a. When the ball is in flight during a try, the period shall end when the
try ends.

A "try" (shot) ends with one of three outcomes: A made basket, a missed basket, or goaltending. If it ends with goaltending, the offensive team is awarded two or three points, depending upon the attempt.

I remember hearing about a situation in the late 90's in the IHSA where a situation like this occurred and the play was called goal tending.  I believe it was in the Lockport or Joliet area and what's very interesting about the play is that the ball wasn't going to even hit the rim but was smacked away as it came close to the basket and was called goaltending, and the shot-at-the-buzzer team won.

The call was clearly not a correct call in terms of what really is goaltending, but it is my understanding that it would have been the correct call if the ball had actually been goaltended.  Anybody have a rulebook to confirm this?

The Big Blue escape at home...

Millikin 43
Adrian 40

Adrian had the ball, down 1, with :23 to play.  Charles Warren stole the ball and made both FT's with :12 to go...Adrian missed a 3 at the buzzer.

Millikin is not very good offensively, but it appears they make it very difficult for opponents to score.

The Big Blue won this game shooting 29.2% from the field.

North Central dominates Franklin on the road...

North Central 76
Franklin 61

Impressive freshman Derek Raridon with another big game - 23 pts, 9 reb.  David Twyman added 17 and Kyle Julius had 10 off the bench.

NCC shot 59% from the field and held Franklin to 41%.

Franklin (now 4-6) beat Millikin by 10 (at Franklin) earlier this season.

I keep wondering how much of that has to do with Anthony Figueroa being on the Millikin staff. As I've said before, if he coaches defense as well as he played it, Millikin has a genuine defensive guru on its hands.

Franklin really appears to be down this year, but that's still a very solid win for NCC.

North Park has a game late tonight at Whittier, and I'm not sure what to make of the hosts. The Poets are 4-1, but they haven't beaten anybody who is even remotely noteworthy. In fact, I'm more impressed with their lone loss, which was to Biola by eleven in the Poets' last appearance -- a game played at Biola -- than I am with any of their wins. It's an impressive loss because Biola is undefeated and ranked fifth in NAIA-1, and the teams in the upper strata of Biola's conference (the Golden State Athletic Conference) are generally superior to anything that D3 has to offer. In that loss, the Poets hung around for the entire game and forced the Biola coach to keep in his starters until the final buzzer.

I guess it's a good matchup, because there's as many questions swirling around NPU at this point as there are around Whittier.

Aurora beat Elmhurst in what must've looked like an NBA game, 107-95. The Spartans shot 56% from the field and 48% from downtown, while EC retaliated with 55% and 56%, respectively. In terms of free throws, both teams went to the line early and often, as AU went 21-24 (88%) from the charity stripe and the 'jays went 24-35 (69%).

Aurora was up big in this one, leading by 29 at several points in the second half. The Spartans were still up by 27 with eight minutes to go, 91-64, when Elmhurst went on a complete tear. The 'jays actually cut the lead down to ten at one point in the last couple of minutes, but they simply didn't have enough time to come back from such a huge deficit.

Chris Childs had 20, Zack Boyd scored 19, James Robertson added 16, and Joe Acosta had a 12 and 7 day for the 'jays, who are now 4-4 on the year.
