North Central's 74-66 win over Adrian Sat evening in Naperville was a tail of two halves.
In the opening 20 minutes it was the Cards who bit down on the Bulldogs noses and applied unrelenting defensive pressure that held the visitors to a stunningly low 18 points
However, it appeared Redbirds abandoned all pretense of defensive pressure during the halftime break as during the second 20 minutes, they treated the Gregory Arena floor like a bullring, including doing a fine imitation of a group of matadors who didn't do much else but waive as the hard charging Bulldogs ran past them on their way to a 48 point 2nd half. Of the 10 Adrian players who scored in the game, 5 of them tallied all of their points after the break.

Reid Barringer, who hit for 44 against Rockford on Wed, had an off night and was held to just 5 points. However, Derek Raridon rode to the rescue pouring in a game high 26 points on 7 for 11 shooting from the field (1/1 on 3s) coupled with 11/12 from the line. It was the 6th consecutive game in which the freshman topped the 20 point mark. Point guard Jonny Knapczyk, having recently undergone an offensive transformation, scored 16 points (6/12 + 4/6) tying his career high set just last Wed against Rockford. David Twyman turned in a strong overall game, contributing 10 points, including the top two highlights of the evening, to go along with a game high 8 rebounds and 8 assists without committing a turnover. Twyman threw down two thunderous dunks. On the first, he blew by his man as he drove the left side of the lane. As he neared the rim after takeoff, he posterized the Adrian defender who came over from the weak side in an attempt to impede his progress by flying up and over the defender to pound the ball down through the hoop. On the 2nd dunk, he flew down the lane, rebounded a missed shot as it caromed off the front of the rim, and threw it down with 2 hands before returning to earth.

While the Cardinals led by 20 early in the 2nd half, the Bulldogs finally managed to cut the lead to 5 with just under a minute remaining. However, Brian Evans and Derek then each hit 2 free throws to ice the victory.
In the end, the telling points in the Cards win were their winning the battle on the boards by a 36 to 24 count, and, after shooting 42 free throws against Rockford last Wed., getting to the line another 35 times against Adrian. Each team made 23 field goals, but North Central converted 25 free throws, which was as many as Adrian attempted, and their rebound advantage resulted in 20 2nd chance points.

I've been planning to respond to the CCIW football All-Decade team, but haven't had a free moment to repond intelligently.

You would never leave yourself open with such an obvious straight line if Cardinal Alum ever checked the basketball room. ;)

Re-enforces "how busy" I am when I fail to check if a post "tee's it up" for Cardinal Alum.   :P

Incidentally, thanks to Greg for carrying the broadcast the other night. Just so folks know as it's no secret, I will be in most of the remaining broadcasts for North Park but will miss a few as my father was diagnosed with a brain tumor about two weeks ago. Not the Christmas gift that we were all expecting but something we're dealing with the best we can. I will be travelling to Nebraska several times this spring to help my family out with things so I will unfortunately miss some of the games.

So sorry to hear this.  My thoughts and prayers go out to you father and family.

No North Parkers in the all-decade list.  It was truly a dismal decade.  Also:  The 00s Was a Lost Decade for American Workers.

The Washington Post reports the past decade was the worst for the US economy in modern times. There has been zero net job creation since December 1999. No previous decade going back to the 1940s had job growth of less than 20 percent. Middle-income households made less in 2008, when adjusted for inflation, than they did in 1999. And the net worth of American households has also declined when adjusted for inflation. This compares with sharp gains in every previous decade since data were initially collected in the 1950s. Wall Street also registered its first-ever negative decade on a total return basis.

What has happened to North Central 6th man Kyle Julius (6-4 senior SG)?  He not only no longer appears on the roster, but his stats don't even show up in the season boxscore.

http://northcentralcardinals.com/custompages/MBK/mbk0910/Teamcume.htm

Julius played in 8 games and scored 106 points.  NCC's season point total of 888 is correct, but where are the points scored by Julius?

We've seen kids leave teams mid-season before, but I don't understand the removing the stats part of this.

The individual point totals on the NCC season boxscore only add up to 782...even though the team total says 888.  (The 106-point difference is obviously exactly what Julius scored.)

Julius also now does not appear in any of the league's stats: http://www.cciw.org/winter_bball_m/200910_Statistics/CONFLDRS.HTM

Strange.

Perhaps Mr. Julius is "... actually the ongoing result of a class project by one of Wheaton's advanced computer science seminars"??  ;)

I guess that there's a reason why it's called Orange Julius. ;)

If Kyle Julius is no longer a Cardinal, this would explain why Knapczyk has started shooting the ball more over the past couple of games.

The Kyle Julius Chapter in a nutshell:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EB5-yJM3vJc

Given the checkered collegiate career of Kyle Julius to date, I'm not terribly surprised by this. A little saddened, but not surprised. You only get one chance in your life to be a college basketball player (no matter how many colleges you attend while doing it) and his chance is now over -- unless some school was to take him on for a single semester's worth of games, and it's hard to imagine that happening.

Coaches are often wary of taking on a senior transfer, and Julius is a classic reason why that's the case. It's unfair to stereotype them, of course -- starting with NPU's Anthony Lenoir and working backwards, I can think of a number of senior transfers who were real assets to their teams on and off the court -- but it's true that some of them can be disruptive, me-first types who are uncoachable chemistry risks.

BTW, I love that Singletary clip. I miss that man. He belongs in Bears colors, not 49ers colors; Samurai Mike represents everything great and good about the Chicago Bears and what they're supposed to stand for.

It just confirms Aaron Garriott's intention of taking a medical redshirt this year (and having 3 years left at Wheaton).
