::) Give me a break, Tom. Have I ever called you a troll? No. Do I ever accuse Bob, Chuck, K-Mark, augiefan, USee, and all of the countless other people who regularly post here who neither root for North Park nor "pick NPU as number one" of being trolls? No. Have I ever accused anyone of trolling for failing to compliment NPU players? No. Did rabblerouser engage in trollish behavior by making his first two posts a trash-talking, zero-substance boast that IWU would defeat NPU by twenty points? Yes.

Here's a good working definition of what constitutes an internet troll. For the most part, this room has been a troll-free zone over the twelve years that it's been in existence, and the regulars here prefer it that way. The vibe on CCIW Chat has been a substantive one. You don't need to know everything there is to know about the league, or about basketball, but if you're going to make a statement or engage in debate you have to be prepared to back it up. Although I've disagreed with you pretty regularly about everything from the definition of athleticism to the merit of scheduling D1 teams since you first appeared here this past fall, you understand the room's tenor and for the most part you back up your statements. That's not trolling, that's constructive participation. Talking smack in a content-free manner ... that's trolling.

Your hyperbolic statement above is another matter, though. Here's a helpful hint: If you're going to engage in hyperbole, try to include at least a scintilla of truth to it. Trust me: In an era in which there's a black man in the White House, the New Orleans Saints are in the Super Bowl, and Massachusetts has elected a Republican to the U.S. Senate, there's no shortage of novel things to say about our brave new world without having to resort to hyperbole. ;)

VB:  When I say that NPU will be 6-4 at best, this is the rationale:

NPU will beat Millikin, in Decatur.
NPU will lose at Wheaton.

With Carthage and Augie as opponents in the Crackerbox, I say that NPU will win one, but not both, of those contests.  Thus, 6-4.

So let it be written... so let it be done.

Actually, the 20-point-loss comment was an opinion -- nothing more, nothing less.  I really thought that the Titans would take it out on the Chicago Vikes after their 1-point loss at Wheaton.  But they didn't (or couldn't) do it.

Sure, it probably offended some people...but it's interesting to see how some of the NPU possters have jumped back on the bandwagon when they're finally having a competitive seeason.

Question for Greg:  does "troll" = "trollish behavior?"  Just asking because, in today's new world, "criminal" now ='s "poor judgment."

If trolling wasn't your intention, fine. It came across that way, though, especially since it was your first post. If you sincerely thought that IWU's loss at the buzzer to Wheaton was sufficient explanation to warrant an honest prediction about the outcome of yesterday's game -- that the Titans would be mad as hornets about that loss and would, as you put it, use it as motivation to "take it out" on NPU, then I apologize and retract my accusation that you were trolling. But it really did read that way.

I strongly disagree with you about this. There is no NPU bandwagon on CCIW Chat. The North Park fans who have posted here this year are the same ones who were posting here last season when the Park was the league's red-headed stepchild. Rob Berki, Viking Blue, Mr. B, Dennis Prikkel, Mark Erickson, and myself -- and even the occasional contributors such as Omaha, Gotberg, tjcummingsfan, and NPC-Alum -- are as far from bandwagoners or fly-by-nighters as you can get. We've all been here through thick and through (mostly) thin, and the regulars here who root for other teams will tell you that we NPU fans who post here have each earned the right to toot North Park's horn in this room.

(Heck, Mark Erickson's still done nothing but gripe about NPU -- note the negativity of his post after NPU's fourth consecutive CCIW win this past Wednesday -- and Dennis Prikkel seems to be in absolute shock that a team coached by Paul Brenegan can walk and chew gum at the same time. If that's a bandwagon, then there's at least two passengers who are awfully prone to complain about the bumpiness of the ride. ;))

I'll give you credit for that one. That got a chuckle out of me. :D

Same here. I'm the first to admit that you have certainly spiced up debate in this room this season!

Yup.

Just as a clarification, my quote was in the context of the "trollish" comment.

The implication of certainity with how the games will go down, with little substance to behind why he thinks so made me think of the Yul Brynner movie line.  I know... it must be Monday!

Only 2 other guards in the league with a cross over and step back that quick and low:)

Russell is 1st team CCIW.

Any excuse to name-drop Yul Brynner is a good one, Mugsy.

Next up: Our resident d3hoops.com cineaste David Collinge drops by to moderate a discussion about whether or not The Magnificent Seven was a worthy remake of Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai.

Please note my original post about NPU's next four games:  I did NOT put "will" in bold type.  Yes, I stated my thoughts with certainty -- but I did not shout it at anyone.  You can thank "Mugsy" for that.

As for bandwagon-hopping, my sense is that Mr. Prikkel fits into that category -- didn't he basically give up on NPC basketball?  Forgive me if he didn't stop going to games.

Greg, you're fun to read.  And I can understand how my initial entree onto this board was interpreted.  You don't get a second chance to make a first impression.  Oh well, that saying is true.

Yep, I'm a new poster, but I've been following this board since it was created.  CCIW basketball is the best Division III hoops in the land.  There -- I said it, and if I'm being too "authoritative" about it, well, just deal with it...  And, on this one, I did the bold type myself!

CCIWFAN3

It's not fair throwing out the number of posts a guy has....I was told showing one's credentials is not allowed.   So rabblerouser in my opinion you have just as much knowledge as an all american.  Just please don't post a Stepehn King novel or 5 years of statistics:)

I didn't add the bolded font to deceptively show you "yelled" in your original post.  It was to give context to my light-hearted response to your post.  Your use of "will" indicating absolute certainty with nothing to suggest why, other than implied opinion.

Bolding sections of a previous post is somewhat common to highlight what the response is intended to address.  Anyone following the entire thread should be able to gather who bolded the section.

Give Dennis his due -- he's usually on hand for about half of NPU's games every season, although we're usually blessed at least once a year on CCIW Chat with hearing about the rigors of traveling all the way into the city from Mount Prospect. ;) Dennis really hasn't posted any positive recent opinions about the Vikings that would constitute bandwagon-hopping. On the other hand, he hasn't been negative, either. He's generally been pretty quiet about NPU this month, following a flurry of this-team-is-hopeless posts in November and December that, to be fair, were hard to refute given how badly the Park was playing. But posting "the veil of the temple was rent" after North Park beat Wheaton strikes me as a tad too cynical to earn someone a seat on a mythical bandwagon. Then again, I'm not the mythical bandwagon's mythical conductor. ;)
