The Vikings really choked this one away. Up by 11 with nine minutes to go, they went into a deep freeze as Millikin went on an 11-0 run over the next four minutes to tie it up. The game seesawed back and forth down the stretch, and with 1:15 to go and the Big Blue up by one Nick Williams missed the front end of a one-and-one. Following two MU free throws, Williams had a chance to redeem himself by hitting what would've been the game-tying trey with thirteen seconds left, but it didn't go in.

Rebounding killed the Vikings, as the telling stat was MU's domination of the boards in the second half, 19-8. The other key indicator was free throws; after a season of poor performances at the line, NPU looked as though it was going to snap out of it as the Vikes shot a sparkling 12-12 from the charity stripe in the first half. Alas, in the second half they reverted to form, going 1-5.

Tip your hat to the Big Blue, who've been in most of their games but just haven't finished them off. Today they did. And the shine is definitely off the apple now for NPU.

Bosko's pregame comments about handling Doug Sexauer tonight were basically...

1) Try to push him out from the low blocks to 10-12 feet.  Make him score there.
2) Pound the ball to Sexauer's man and make him defend, try to wear him out.

He said "What Zimmer and Johnson get will determine how the game goes."  That was basically my assumption I posted this morning...those two are probably going to get good looks.

IWU down 44-24 at halftime at Carthage.  Watching the live video, and that is about as bad of a beating as I've seen an IWU team take in a half.  Ugly.

Final:

Carthage 80
IWU 55

This was never close.  Travis Rosenkranz made a 3 on IWU's first possession, and that was the only lead the Titans had all night.  Carthage led by 20 at the half and IWU never seriously threatened in the 2nd (had it down to 13 with about 8 minutes left I think).

Carthage completely took the Titans out of their offense, starting with Doug Sexauer down low.  I can't remember more than 1 or 2 possessions when he got it on the blocks.  On the other end, IWU couldn't stop the Red Men at all.  I felt like I was watching two different teams than the ones I watched play in Bloomington (in a game IWU led comfortably the entire 2nd half).

I'm glad this one only counts for one loss...it felt like about 3.

Whatever Bosko game-planned for Sexauer, it was gruesomely effective - 9 points and ONE rebound.  Sean Johnson had 25, but no other Titan exceeded 5.  FIVE RedMen scored in double digits.

Curiously (to me, at least) Carthage never did go to the bench, even in 'garbage time' - only 8 RedMen ever saw the floor.  By contrast, the Titans had 14 participate.

Wheaton head coach Mike Schauer goes off on WETN postgame.

"I don't care what has happened vs North Central in the past...we came in convinced we could not make shots here...from the coaching staff down through all the players...it was a bunch of garbage and I'm sick of it...the coaching staff kept talking privately about what a house of horrors this has been..."

Wow.

augiefan

For the record Augie won 62-49 despite a continuation of their horrible FT shooting. 54% tonight. The game was really not that close as the Augie reserves made TOs and fouled to cut the margin of victory in the last few minutes. Elmhurst is really having a terrible season. I suppose they will beat someone in Elmhurst, but it's going to be a challenge to lose to them.

I like where Carthage is...I honestly do not see the Red Men losing again in the league.

The primary reason I picked Wheaton to beat NCC tonight... surely the misery wouldn't continue?  Right?  UGH!!!!
