I see the outcome of the Wheaton game.  That's not good!
McCrary held to 12pts and 6 rb's- anyone have insight on what happened with him and the rest of the game?  Wheaton shot 32% from the floor??!

From a Wheaton fan's perspective:
North Central gave a ton of effort on D in the first half, successfully doubling McCrary aggressively.   The looks Wheaton did get out the double team were missed, which led to Tim fighting to try to score through the double teams, and several turnovers.

In the second half, for the most part NCC decided not to double Tim, but he got into foul trouble and spent a significant part of the half on the bench.  Panner went into attack mode and continued to lead the charge to get Wheaton back in the game with McCrary on the bench, but it was too little too late.

I give coach Raridon a lot of credit for how his team played.  He doesn't have a lot of talent this year, but he seems to get more out of what he has than any other coach in the CCIW.   He puts his players in situations to use their strengths.

I think Panner is going to be the key for the rest of the season for Wheaton.  Ben is an athletic strong kid who can get to the rim when he wants.  Teams are really going to key on McCrary the rest of the way. If Ben can avoid settling for jumps shots, put the ball on the floor and get to the hoop and the free throw line more often, it will put pressure on the defense, and open things up for the team a lot more.

Sorry to be the wet blanket again, but if StevieD does not score 35+ in the first round of the D3 playoffs, I do not see the CCIW winning a single game.  The CCIW is nowhere near the second best D3 conference in the nation.

Much of the success North Central had last year was attributable to impressive defense.
Last night in Naperville, the Cardinals went one better. Applying likely their best defensive pressure of the year, they smothered the Wheaton Thunder and turned their southern crusade into a display of ineptitude and frustration. This was especially manifested in the opening stanza of play, during which the creamsickle clad Thunder's shooting could have easily been surpassed by that of their Wheaton North farm team. As the buzzer ending the 1st 20 minutes of play sounded, Wheaton had sunk 6 of 27 field goal attempts for a ridiculously low 22.2 percent. Tim McCrary led the Thunder with 8 points. In the 2nd half, the Cards shut down everyone except for Ben Panner who scored 19 of his 21 points. Even with Panner's great 2nd half, the Thunder was only able to raise its shooting percentage for the game to 32.1 percent. Leading scorer Tim McCrary was held to 12 points on 5 of 12 shooting. And, despite his league leading rebounding total, the 6'6" McCrary was no match on the boards for either North Central's 6'3" Brian Evans who had a game high 12 boards, or 6'3" David Twyman who pulled down 8 to go along with his 21 points which tied Panner for game high. McCrary fouled out of the contest with about 4 minutes left greatly increasing the odds against a successful Wheaton comeback.

After Wheaton opened the scoring, the Cardinals ripped off 13 straight points, highlighted by Reid Barringer's 3 straight threes. NCC carried a 13 point lead into the locker room at the half. Wheaton's opening basket was the only lead they would hold over the course of the entire evening.

For the game, North Central was led by David Twyman with 21 and 8. Barringer was next with 16. Leading scorer Derek Raridon was limited to 12 points. Brian Evans had 6 points, all in the 2nd half, and dominated on the glass with a game high 12 rebounds, 5 offensive. Evans is the CCIW leader in offensive rebounding. Jonny Knapczyk played a nice floor game and dished out 5 assists against only 1 TO. Knapczyk also cashed in on 2 big free throws with only 30 seconds left to increase the Cardinal lead to 4.

Yeesh.  Glad to have missed it.  Thanks for the recap.  Now they need the game on Wednesday.

You are welcome CCIW. However, apparently 2 of our classy fellow posters didn't care for my description.   :(

AO,
I certainly didn't give you the negative karma from your description but it isnt hard to see why you got it. (1). You color your commentary with cardinal red pretty heavily. Obviously the Cards played some good defense but Wheaton out rebounded the Cardinal 41-34 and (2) the leading offensive rebounder was Spencer Shultze from Wheaton, not your Brian Evans but you failed to recognize that either. So (3) if evans "Dominated" the glass how did Spencer Shultze get more offensive rebounds and the Thunder get more total rebounds? I didn't see the game nor was I online to watch the stats so haven't made any comments but your (4) commentary (smothered, ineptitude? surpassed by a hs team?? and (5) you really think McCrary is "no match" for evans and twyman?)was borderline gloating in my opinion. something you are entitled to do but should expect some on here to respond.

Usee--

First of all, I'm surprised by your lack of comprehension concerning what you read, and by your surprise at my commentary. Why? Because in my opinion, you are one of the most knowledgeable, insightful, and descriptive posters on the board. I have enjoyed your descriptions of game action on several occasions.
To address and concerns and/or misconceptions you may have, let me address them by number (which I inserted in your comments).

1. You indicate I "color (my) commentary with cardinal red pretty heavily." Guilty!
The reason I do it is because I HAVE to. As really the only Cardinal supporter on here my voice is almost always the only one that will be heard concerning the Cardinals. I am, unfortunately, not a fan of a school that enjoys the support of many posters in the room. Accordingly, I usually feel the need to be a little "colorful" in my description of the action. Just my style which I appreciate may not be everyone's cup of tea. Also, much of my commentary is done tongue-in-cheek in my feeble way of adding a little dramatic flair. Just a fan being behind his team. Forgive me.

2. If you will re-read what I said, you will see I never said Evans was the leading offensive rebounder in the game. I DID correctly say he was the (total) game high rebounder. I also said Evans is the CCIW leader in offensive rebounds, which is correct. If you will check the stats, I'm sure you will see that BOTH of those statements are 100 percent true.

3. I said, and I believe correctly so, that Evans "dominated" on the glass. While "dominated" may be a bit strong, the 6'3" Evans DID have more total rebounds than either the 6'6" McCrary or the 6'6" Schultze. Given the 3 inches he gives away to both players, I'd say a good case can be made that Brian's performance was indeed "dominating." And, while we're on the subject, while Schultze did have the most offensive (not total) rebounds in this particular game, maybe he did so because the Cardinal defense limited him to a 1 for 8 shooting night, and he got some of his own misses--which he then missed again!

4. You have difficulty with some of my commentary. In particular you are bothered by my use of "smothered," "ineptitude," and "surpassed by a HS team."
*A. If you limit the opposition to 22 percent shooting in the 1st half and 32 percent for the game, can't your defense be classified as "smothering?" Do you disagree?
*B. Along the same lines, I'd call those shooting percentages "ineptitude." How would you describe them?
*C. I believe most HS teams DO shoot better percentages that did Wheaton Sat.  night. True?

Lastly, Wheaton came into the game vs North Central with the 30th highest number of votes in the country in the latest D3Hoops national poll, a 13-5 overall record, and a 5-2 conference record as opposed to NCC's 9-9 overall record and 2-5 CCIW mark. YOU expected a Wheaton win as did 99 percent of the posters. Yet, Wheaton led only once all game and that was 2-0. While NCC won by only 2, I don't think saying the Cardinals played "smothering" defense, or "dominated" play is too much of a stretch under the circumstances. If you don't believe me, go ask Coach Schauer what words he would use to describe the game.

CCIWFAN3

I tend to agree with Mark Erickson. Too many weaknesses in every team in CCIW.  Carthage with the fewest.  Carthage looks the strongest right now.  I'm not going to list every teams weakness since I don't want to get in a battle of "don't pick on my team".  But they all have a weakness that will keep them out of the elite 8 group.  A lot of good young players though so the future looks promising for all.

The teams that have great posts...have no guard play.  The teams that have great guard play have inexperienced young posts.  A couple teams are OC which can make or break them on any given night.   A couple teams show up mentally for some games and not for others.  That's it in a nutshell.

Baloney. Greg Sager is largely the only NPU poster on here of any substance as is Titan Q for IWU and I NEVER see those guys beating their own chest by insulting the opposition. I have no problem with you giving your teams commentary and am glad someone is representing the cardinals (although I would prefer only 1 rep in the football room as well). I do laugh to myself when you show up after a victory and disappear for stretches after losses. I have no problem with what you have said more with the way you say it. I think when you compare an opposing college team's performance to that of a HS team it is pretty weak and gutless (regardless of whether its true). I also provided the color on the rebounding because you carefully danced around the fact that wheaton out rebounded the cardinals (both on the offensive end and for the game), instead spinning the facts to highlight your own guy. I usually see other posters include such important details in the interest of giving a fair account of a game. As for the game itself Shultze outrebounded Evans despite playing only 22 minutes to Evans 34. Perhaps a fair comparison would be to include the stats of each player who came in at the 4 or the 5? How does that work out for you? I am in no way criticizing or downplaying what Brian Evans has done. He clearly is establishing a name for himself on the boards for NCC. Again, my issue is with your insulting description of the opponent. Come on here and gloat after a win and disappear after a loss all you want, but puff up your team at the expense of the opponent and you should expect to be called out.

Usee and AO...

Here is the game:
1) Wheaton could not defend N.C.'s dribble drive.  N.C. guards did whatever they wanted.
2) Wheaton must have missed 5-6 open bunnies.
3) Wheaton guards could not get to the paint.
4) McCrary was double and triple teamed.  He can't do it all, unless they want him to work concessions at halftime too.
5) Both teams played hard and banged.

succinct - thank you - the rest of the rhetoric is .....
I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

That's it dennis.  Guard play decided the game.

On a side not thouigh Derek R. is good.  He will be all american in a year or so. I'm not sure if he's done growing.

CCIWFan-

No need to recap the game for me. As I have clearly articulated, my posts were about Andone's condescending tone. I have no issue with his substance. Wheaton lost a game they did not deserve to win in an opponents gym. So be it.

1. I'm sorry my style does not conform with what you deem as being appropriate. We all have our own style. Things aren't always going to fall in line with your expectations.
2. I don't think I "insulted" Wheaton. I said NCC had a smothering defense which is true when you hold an opponent to 22 percent shooting in the 1st half and 32 percent for the game. I said a high school team could probably shoot the same percentages, which in many instances would be true.
3. So what if Wheaton had more offensive and more total boards. They still lost.
4. HOW IN THE WORLD CAN YOU SAY "Schultze outrebounded Evans?" My God man,
Evans had 12 rebounds compared to Schultze's 9. Its right there in the stats, and 12 is more than 9 even in Wheaton. I never said Brian had more offensive rebounds than Spencer. I said Brian leads the league in offensive rebounds which is also true. Look it up in the CCIW stats as I did. Evans "dominated" the total rebounding picture. These are facts. You can look them up as I did.
5. Ask Coach Schauer if he feels "insulted" by any of my remarks. If he does, I'll apologize to him as it was not my intent to insult anyone. I think you need to learn the difference between being insulting and using colorful and descriptive commentary.

I'll work on my style. You work on being a little less sensitive.

Nice analysis. North Central hasn't had as much to "celebrate" this season as hoped for. Hence my colorful although overly wordy "gloating."

Remember how all this started. You came on here with your bi-weekly complaint about your Karma. So who is the sensitive one? I am sure coach Shauer could care less what you say and I only got in this discussion because you stated some people didn't like your commentary from the game (I am obviously not the only one since I haven't touched your karma) . If you think I am sensitive you don't know me very well. I merely called a spade a spade. You chose to point out certain cardinal colored facts and ignore others but you definitely (which is fine) did so in a  condescending manner to an opponent you have been on record as disliking (but haven't had a chance to say it for a year). If it satisfies you to liken your opponent to a HS team all the while calling a 2pt win "dominating" more power to ya. But don't complain if the Karma bats come out of their cave as a result.

I'll keep working on you but don't have high hopes. As for me, some things never change.   8-)

Vikingblue- You have 151 posts since January of 2007 (including gaps between February and December each year). Sager has a brazillian more posts than you over the same period. No disrespect but GS has carried you! :)
