Looks like it was early October...and I may have nailed the top 5, in order...

So if IWU has over 90% of there returning points/assists/rebounders and they finished 7th what did they gain to get them from #7 to #2.....same with Carthage...#5 to #1?  And if Wheaton lost over 50% of their points why are they still so high? I'm just curious what was added to each team to make them that much better or worse from last year.  I can see Auggie, N.P. and Millikin finishing the same.

For me, it really has nothing to do with what Carthage and IWU gained.  It has to do with what last year's best teams lost...

Wheaton - Kent Raymond*, Andy Wiele*
Elmhurst - Brent Ruch*, Ryan Burks*, Robert Strzemp*
Augustana - Brett Wessels*, Jordan Delp, Chandlor Collins*, Alex Washington, Justin Bertrand
North Central - Chris Drennan*, Matt Rogers*, Mitch Raridon

* = all-CCIW in 2009

Last year the four "oldest" teams finished in the top 4 and the four "youngest" finished in the bottom 4.  This season, that picture changes quite a bit with natural player transition.

In my opinion...

* Steve Djurickovic is good enough, with the help he does have around him, to lead Carthage to the 2010 title
* IWU has the most depth and balance returning and will finally trot out a "veteran" squad again (after 2 years of being very young).
* Wheaton should be very good again behind developing star Tim McCrary...and helped by the additional of D1 transfer Aaron Garriott to replace Raymond.
* Augustana is always good and they have plenty of talent to contend.
* North Park could be a huge sleeper - the Vikings have a ton of talent this year and it seems to be spread out across all 5 positions.

(I don't know what to make of Elmhurst, NCC, and Millikin at this point.)

Also, great game by Jahns, Panner, and Carwell to complement McCrary.  It's like last year's key players are peaking at the right time.

Looks like the Vikings are going to come up just a bit short again tonight.  But North Park fans have reason for optimism.  After a big hiccup for a week and a half where it looked like they might fold up the tent, the Vikes showed a lot of fight, especially tonight.

As Sager has said previously, for a team with as many issues as it has had this year, North Park has finally brought some respect back to Foster and Kedzie.  I hope this core sticks around...should be a good year next year.

Absolutely. This is a team that's losing only one senior, and although that senior is a good one -- Nick Williams -- an heir apparent to his power forward position has stepped up and made himself known throughout the league. Since being installed as a permanent member of the rotation for the AC @ NPU game a couple of weeks ago, Jorge Gonzalez has averaged 11.7 ppg and 7.3 rpg over those five games. He looks ready to step into the starting five and be a dynamo for the Vikings next season.

It's a team that has visibly improved a great deal since November (granted, they looked like horse dookie back in November), and it should be getting some important players back for next year that it was missing in 2009-10. I'm pretty excited for next season already.

CCIWchamps

Can we start a discussion of great scorers in the history of CCIW and how their assists looked like?  TM has begun to dish out assists when facing his double teams and his 11-10-9 really helped out tonight, in spite of it seeming to be a "quiet" night for him.  Seeing how he's improved in that lately, and how someone like SD regularly scores and dishes to teammates, I appreciate that quality more than I used to notice.

I think there are 2 types of great scorers: those that get doubled and score anyway, and those that get doubled and kick to teammates who score instead.  Sometimes you may want one or the other.  Curious how many in CCIW past fall into the latter category- good PPG and ASSISTS stats.

I think the entire top 5 is excited about next year...

* Carthage returns everyone
* IWU returns everyone except backup PG Sean Dwyer
* Wheaton returns emerging All-American candidate Tim McCrary and role players,  and will finally have Aaron Garriott
* Augustana returns everyone except Matt Pelton and has a great nucleus of young big guys

The CCIW is going to be loaded in 2010-11.  Going to be very tough for teams like North Central, Millikin, and Elmhurst trying to build and get in the mix.

In AO's defense (and I DON'T mean AndOne! :D), he is apparently the only living potential poster for the UMAC board, so he joins in on the MIAC board.  While I see nothing in particular to complain about him, MIAC posters do not seem to take it well whenever he gloats about a Northwestern (his school) victory over a MIAC team.  Thus his near-record negative karma.

[The only poster I can think of who exceeds him is Touchdown Tommy, a MIAC football poster, who revels in his negative karma, and is offended if anyone gives him +k! ;)]

Actually, his near-record karma stems from his insistence a few years ago that being tied with St. John's after a quarter of a football game somehow equated Northwestern with being competitive at that leve.

I'll yield.  I didn't notice his travails that far back! ;)

Carthage 61, NPU 55

* Mitch Thompson: 8 rebs

Mitch Thompson also had 6 blocks and Carthage played better with him on the court for the second straight game.

Re:  TitanQ's post...thanks...and while the CCIW is down in the "power rankings" this year, the conference looks formidable next year.

NPU's Joe Gonzalez got a double-double in only 22 minutes!?!?

If Robinson and Russell struggled so mightily, why did Biege get only 10 minutes??

We were competitive for a full half  :P, and it isn't as if my karma was earned entirely due to my posting surrounding that single game, but I surely have received the majority of the karma from the Johnnie faithful.

full disclosure:  I've got my IWU hoody on, given to me from me from my brother in-law who teaches there now, but I'm as comfortable supporting Wheaton due to the perceived family relationship between wheaton and northwestern.  I'd still be open to jump on any cciw bandwagon once the minnesota schools are eliminated though.  This is the year we find a team in the midwest who can humble Wash U.

Congrats to the Redmen for at least a share of the CCIW crown.  Let's hope we get 2-3 CCIW teams in the DIII dance.  Humbling Wash U is going to be a real stretch.
