Congratulations to the 3 Titans on the 2010 All-CCIW team.

* Doug Sexauer (16.1 ppg, 5.1 rpg, .667 FG) had an outstanding season and, I believe, was the back-to-the-basket player opposing coaches had to gameplan for more than any other in the league (I consider Tim McCrary as more of a face-the basket player).  Defenses had to work very hard to contain IWU's 6-7 center this season.  To shoot 67% from the field, considering how he was defended all conference season long, is extremely impressive.

* Sean Johnson (15.5 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 2.9) bounced back from a bit of a "sophomore slump" and really had a big year.  Opposing defenses had to be aware of Sean's presence at all times in 2010.

* Travis Rosenkranz (8.6 ppg, 4.6 apg, 3.4 A:TO) had 65 assists and just 19 turnovers in 14 CCIW games, leading the league in assist to turnover ratio by a wide margin.  (Stevie D was 2nd at 2.94.)  Travis came into his own as a pure point-guard this season and really did a great job controlling the tempo for the Titans and running the offense.  It's nice to see a pure PG, without gaudy scoring numbers, recognized.

IWU's 3 all-conference players all got a lot better from their sophomore seasons to this year.  I believe we'll see them all make a final step next year as seniors.  Behind this nucleus, IWU should be right in the middle of the title picture again in 2011.

Mitch Thompson's a bit of a surprise as well -- he didn't start any CCIW games, and he averaged less than 22 minutes per game -- but Carthage clearly deserved three players on the All-CCIW team, and it's not really clear-cut whom players two and three ought to be for the Red Men.

His numbers don't jump off the page at you, but Bosko has been very high on Cody Hilton this season. I would have expected him over the freshman Thompson.

I was guessing Malcom Kelly and Tyler Pierce would get the nod. I actually think that the second-best player on the team is Max Cary, but he missed six games to mononucleosis at the beginning of the season.

Big congratulations to Emanuel Crosby upon being named to the All-CCIW team for NPU. The big sophomore center averaged 10.6 ppg and 4.8 rpg in league play, even though the Vikings frequently went small and his minutes were thus restricted to 28 mpg. What's remarkable about his feat is that he began the year as Phil Schniedermeier's understudy and was thrust into the starting role after Schniedermeier suffered his season-ending leg injury. Crosby clearly made some very big strides this past season, and with Schniedermeier taking a medical redshirt this season NPU fans can look forward to having a pretty outstanding center tandem in both 2010-11 and 2011-12.

It would be interesting to see the hometowns of the All-Conference selections overlayed on a map. Not atypical of CCIW basketball overall, this is a geographically-compact bunch.

Knightslappy's latest numbers have IWU as the #11 Pool C right now...Wheaton #20.  (There are 19 Pool C's available this year.)  Now, based on regional rankings we know that is not exactly correct, since Wheaton is ranked ahead of IWU right now:

I'm still of the opinion that...

1) The IWU/Wheaton loser is probably out...or, at least, will have to hope to get in as about #19 of 19.

2) The IWU/Wheaton winner goes to the bubble...and would have a decent chance.

3) With a win, IWU would have a better chance of getting selected from the bubble than Wheaton would with a win (based on better in-region winning %...see Knightslappy's numbers).

I think the choice of Mitch Thompson is extremely impressive for someone who rarely started this year.  I posted awhile back that I felt Thompson was an absolute steal of a recruit after having seen him play a few games this year.  His jumping ability is off the charts and once he taps his full potential, there is no doubt in my mind he will be a first team selection at least a couple of times.   The fact that Bosko nominated him despite not being a full-time starter certainly speaks volumes and for the four coaches that voted for him, I think they see the potential as well.

With that said, I believe if Max Cary wouldn't have missed six games, he very well was on his way to a second team nomination.  That may have caused Thompson not to have garnered enough votes to get the third team nod or it may have come down to him or Pierce for a final spot.

This is my first stab at the "mortal locks"...the current Pool A's that would be guaranteed a C in the event of a conference tournament upset.

(In order of Knightslappy's national ranking)

1. Williams (1) - OK if Middlebury wins the Pool A...they are a Pool C lock anyway
2. William Paterson (3)
3. St. Thomas (4)
4. Whitworth (7)
5. UW-Whitewater (8) - OK if Stevens Point wins the A since they are a lock C...but can't have another WIAC win the A
6. Eastern Mennonite (9) - OK if Guilford of Va. Wesleyan wins the A since both are C locks anyway
7. MIT (11)
8. Carthage (13)
9. Central (14)
10. Cabrini (15)
11. St. Mary's (16)
12. Texas-Dallas (17)
13. St. John Fisher (19)
14. St. Norbert (21)
15. Wooster (22)

In other words, if you are an IWU or Wheaton fan, root like heck for these teams in their conference tournaments (well, except for Carthage of course if your team is playing the Red Men Saturday night!).  Gotta keep upsets in this group of 15 to about 2-3.  The bubble bursts a little with each upset.

When he and I did our bracketology projection we used last week's regional rankings as our starting point and then created our own based on the newest results and updated numbers. As a result, we made the projection with Wheaton ranked ahead of Ill. Wesleyan, despite KnightSlappy rankings you see which are based solely on the hard numbers.

Congrats to Steve D. on being named MOP. Well deserved. Here's the article from the Kenosha News

The 2 Carthage games I saw in CCIW play, I would say that Mitch Thompson was an impact player in both games.  It's a surprise that he got a third team pick, but his defense is really excellent.  On the other hand, I saw Malcom Kelly and Tyler Pierce both have a good game and one ok game.  So maybe it was the consistancy of play late in the season.

Cody Hilton gets points for working his butt off on defense, but it isn't clear to me that he is a better defensive player than Kelly and he certainly isn't as good offensively.

Mr. Ypsi

With today's regional rankings, it looks much better for the CCIW getting two (or even three) teams in.  WashU is #1, but they are AQ.  Carthage, Wheaton, and IWU are 2, 3, and 4.  That means a CCIW team will be at the table right from the start, and, if that one is selected, a CCIW team follows them.

This is not the FINAL ranking, but if the ones following don't go AQ it means they also lost in their tourney, so there is no reason to believe they would pass a CCIW team.

I agree with 2, in fact it looks pretty certain to me, but probably not 3

Great article in Kenosha News on Malcom Kelly and his stint in the Navy.  Also talks about how assistant coaches Antoine McDaniel and Cory Wilson are the one who noticed him at the Rec Plex playing basketball.  Rec Plex is similar to a YMCA.

That's a rare find...24 year old freshman ready to play.  No worries about being physically ready like most coaches are regarding their freshmen.
