Sam Savaglio, a 6-foot-1 guard from Kenosha Tremper is heading to Augustana.

He was a first-team All-Southeast Conference and first-team All-Kenosha County selection.

Senior season -- 12.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists, shot 79 percent from the free-throw line (64-of-81). He scored 753 career points.

I'm always intrigued when a CCIW school gets a recruit from another team's town. ;)

Do you happen to know - was Carthage simply not interested, or were they eliminated BECAUSE they were 'hometown'?

Brian Van Haaften of Buena Vista is currently the second-ranked active coach in D3 in terms of career winning percentage, trailing only Don Lofton of Mississippi College.

I would be careful with that pronouncement. The list you link to is not updated through this past season yet, and BVU went 15-12.

Nice catch, Pat. After the 2009-10 season Van Haaften dropped down from second to fourth among active coaches:

Don Lofton, Mississippi College  130-37  .778
Steve Moore, Wooster  625-191  .765
Pat Miller, UW-Whitewater  192-61  .759
Brian Van Haaften, Buena Vista  293-97  .751

Van Haaften barely held on to fourth place at .75128 at season's end, as Glenn Van Wieren of Hope retires with a .7508 career mark.

Sorry, coebball, but you lost your bet. Blame it on the two Pats. ;)

6-5 PF Andrew Ziemnik from Oswego H.S. is heading to Illinois Wesleyan.  Ziemnik earned 4th team IBCA all-state honors, averaging 18.5 ppg and 11.3 rpg in 2009-10.     As a junior, he averaged 16.7 ppg and 10.2 rpg.

I've never seen Ziemnik play, but everything I find about him on the net suggests he is an extremely hard worker, a relentless rebounder, a very physical player on both ends, very versatile (can score inside and outside), and kid who just knows how to play the game.  I think the biggest question mark surrounding Ziemnik is his height.  I have seen him listed at both 6-4 and 6-5 in various places.  It's safe to say he will be undersized in the CCIW vs 6-6 and 6-7 post players.

It looks like we could have a Johnny Damon/Yankees situation here with the hair...

I believe Ziemnik chose IWU over UW-Whitewater.

Well it looks like Augie addressed their desperate need for guards to compliment their strong core of returning interior players. I know little about any of their recruits, as the Illinois recruits come from large schools, where they were not All Staters like IWU's recruits, but they may have been a bit overshadowed by competition against DI and DII recruits in their Chicago suburban conferences. The out of state recruits do not appear to have been highly regarded enough to have made All State teams, but they look like they have some capacity to play at the CCIW level.

Some of these guard recruits stand a good chance to play their freshman year, if they can shoot the 3 pointer with any consistency and can make FTs at 70% or better. FT shooting was a huge shortcoming on Augie's team this past season, so hopefully help is on the way.

Actually, 4 of the 5 IWU recruits from Illinois are from "big" schools (3A/4A) too - all except Zimmer (1A Delavan).

(The Missouri kid - Mayberger, from SLUH - is also from a big school.)

Mayberger is a 6-5 wing...he reminds me a little of IWU junior reserve Matt Schick.

We'll have to see how that drama unfolds.

I believe Ziemnik chose IWU over UW-Whitewater.

Andrew Ziemnik, or "Baby Jesus" as he is affectionately known in the far western Chicago suburban area basketball circles, was so much of a done deal for Wesleyan that most teams stopped active recruiting him by the end of January. By that time it had been widely reported that his sister is an IWU student, and that Andrew was almost certain to follow in her footsteps.

Andrew is an excellent student and a very good basketball player. I believe he ranked something like 23rd in his class at the end of his junior year. Accurately listed as 6'4" he plays at about a 6'6" or 6'7" level. He is a tenacious rebounder who is equally adapt at at scoring inside or stepping out and hitting the 3.
Most of his inside scoring results when he starts out in a corner, usually the left, takes a pass, and drives the baseline to power up between 2 defenders. While somewhat of a wild child on the court, he is more quiet and introverted otherwise.
I have never seen Wesleyan recruit Davis of Galesburg play, but I'll bet Ziemnik can hold his own against him.
I believe the only reason it took this long for word of his enrollment at Wesleyan to surface is that he was waiting/hoping for a low D1 or perhaps a D2 offer. The most likely reason this didn't materialize is that Andrew's foot speed would be classified as falling somewhere below the norm for the higher divisional levels.
