The CCIW does not have an All-Sports Award, but if it did, this is how points would look for the 2009-10 school year...

(The point system is based on conferences that have an All-Sports Award.  Take the number of teams that compete in the conference sponsored sport and then assign the highest regular season finisher to the highest point total and work your way down.)

IWU:  116 (1)
Carthage:  115 (2)
Wheaton:  107 (3)
North Central: 107 (3)
Augustana:  92 (5)
Millikin: 57 (6)
Elmhurst: 56 (7)
North Park: 37 (8)
Rose-Hulman: 7 (9)

Illinois Wesleyan has had a really good year athletically.  Just thinking about the sports I follow the closest, the football team advanced to Round 2 of the NCAA tournament, the men's basketball team made it to the Elite 8, the women's basketball team to the Sweet 16, and the baseball team is heading to Appleton.

Hats off to all of the coaches and student-athletes.  It's been a fun year to be a Titan.

What's up with a ninth institution?

Rose-Hulman competes in the CCIW in swimming.

I'll be pulling for them since they may have a better chance to win it than my NCC Lady Cards do!  The NCC Men's track team is seeking another outdoor title in track and field as well...let's go CCIW!

Is there a reason why the CCIW does not have a All Sports Trophy?

It would be fun to see what the full rosters are projecting to look like, but one thing that seems likely is that there should be a full contingent of JV games being played this year.  There were a number of times last year where it seemed like a couple of injuries eliminated JV teams for schools.

The new problem may be getting enough minutes for everyone during JV games and figurig out when to play them.

Millikin University has a storied and long-lived men's basketball tradition, dating back 106 years to its inaugural 1903-04 campaign. The Big Blue battle in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin — regarded as one of the best small college conferences in the nation and the home of former L.A. Lakers and current Golden State forward Devean George — and at the NCAA Division III level after moving up from the NAIA level.

-----

For a Division III school, Millikin University has a strong following from its supporters.

"They average about 1,500 to 2,000 fans a game," said Placeres. "That's more people than a lot of Division I programs draw.

Coach Placeres must be counting the drop-down curtain as about 1500 people.

Gasp. A Millikin poster! :D

Seriously, though, allblues, don't be a stranger. If it's been said once it's been said a thousand times: We need Millikin posters in this room. Millikin's the only CCIW school that doesn't have a regular presence here.

Coach Placeres must be counting the drop-down curtain as about 1500 people.

Coach Placeres can be forgiven his ignorance. It's highly unlikely that a high-school basketball coach deep in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Tennessee would have even heard of Millikin University, let alone know anything about its gym or its average attendance. In fact, I'll bet that anyone in Gatlinburg who hears the word "Millikin" immediately pulls an Ann Curry and thinks of Milligan College, an NAIA school two hours' drive south down I-81.

I'm guessing that everything Coach Placeres has heard about Millikin is strictly secondhand, if not thirdhand. He and the rest of the Gatlinburg folks are clearly unfamiliar with Millikin specifically and with D3 culture and rules in general; notice the "signing ceremony" picture accompanying the article and the opening paragraph that refers to how McKinley Maples "signed to play" for Millikin. G-P High School (or perhaps it was just the coach and Maples' family) clearly staged a sham signing ceremony, because eastern Tennessee is NAIA country -- even the Maryville people would admit that -- and in NAIA country that's what a basketball player does when he decides upon a college: He signs a paper for the cameras while his family and coach stand around him.

Placeres apparently does know about Millikin's current status in terms of its basketball style, since he accurately referred to the Big Blue as a defense-oriented team that needs perimeter shooters. After all, Colby Long can't be the only person who attempts treys for Jimmy Millikin next season. My guess is that Placeres or Maples, or both, was told about MU's current style and need for an outside shooter by a Millikin coach during the recruiting process.

Some of the other amusing errors in the article -- the bit about Devean George, the statement that the CCIW moved up from NAIA to NCAA D3 (if the CCIW was ever an official NAIA conference, that knowledge must've been lost in the mists of time; at least two CCI schools, Wheaton and Augie, were NCAA College Division members in the '50s, at least North Park and Augie were NCAA College Division members in the '60s, and the CCIW was a majority-NCAA league throughout the '70s and into the '80s) -- are more likely the result of the writer not doing his homework.

Perhaps the funniest misconceptions in the article come from the player himself, though. It's not unusual to see these types of things -- anyone remember Luke Scarlata and the bit about Augustana's medical school? -- but young Master Maples seems to be under the impression that Millikin has a theology minor that he wishes to pursue. Millikin, a now thoroughly secular institution that has dispensed with its ties to the Presbyterian Church, USA, has neither a major nor a minor in theology ... or in any related field (Biblical studies, religion, etc.), for that matter. He also had this to say:

Quote"I just hope all the Yankees aren't mean and rude to me, because I feel like I'm too nice. And man, it's going to get cold up there."

I won't argue that we Yankees are a less hospitable sort than our Rebel brethren -- some of us bluebellies do like to nitpick, after all :D -- but at least the local accent down yonder in Decatur ought to make Maples feel somewhat at home. ;) And, just for the sake of accuracy, I note that the average winter temperature in Decatur is only about five degrees colder than it is in Gatlinburg.

"To see what is in front of one's nose is a constant struggle." -- George Orwell

Mr. Ypsi

And I'd bet the ranch that Decatur gets far fewer ice storms than Gatlinburg!

(I double-checked to see if Placeres was just clumsy in his sentence structure - if George was perhaps raised in Decatur?  But, no, he was a Minnesota lad from birth to the NBA.)
