Just FYI, in 2010-11 IWU will have a graduate assistant on the coaching staff for the first time.  Shortly after last season ended, the Athletics department posted for the job and had a huge number of applicants.  A few weeks ago Buddy Sodemann was selected.

Sodemann, who played for Division III Westminster (Fulton, Mo), comes from a basketball family.  His father Bill just retired after 22 seasons as head coach at Parkway West High School in St. Louis.  His older brother Chip, who played at Truman State, was recently named head coach at Washington High School in Missouri.  And his younger brother Patrick, who played for his dad at Parkway West, is heading to Truman State next year on a basketball scholarship.

Buddy was an assistant coach under Mark Edwards at Wash U last year.  I believe he'll be on the IWU staff for 2 years at which time another grad assistant will be hired for a 2-year term.

(Assistants David Steinbrueck and Dave Feeney will both be back next year.)

Decent spread of games. Like the tournament. Good use of in-region games.

Does anyone know when Augustana will release their non conference basketball schedule?

According to Wash U.'s website, the Bears will visit the Carver Center on Monday Nov 22nd to face Augie.
If they play a similar slate to last year, the Vikes should be well seasoned for the CCIW wars.

IWU and Carthage have to be the favorites for the title.... with Augie close behind!

While I'll wait a few months to actually make a 'reasoned' assessment, that would be my early gut reaction.  I'm not even sure I'd say Augie is 'close behind', except I still have vivid memories of 2006, when IWU probably had the most talent in the entire country, yet Augie won the title! :(

And that reminds me of 2001 when Carthage advanced to the Final Four -- but didn't win the Conference title with an 11-3 record! (Elmhurst went 12-2).

In 2001, IWU finished third in the CCIW - and third in the country.

Carthage made the FF in 2002, not 2001.  And in 2002 they won the title with a 13-1 record.

Carthage made the Elite Eight in 2001. That was the year that the Red Men lost to Ohio Northern by two in the sectional final, as Tony Papanicholas was unable to get off a baseline shot at the buzzer that would've sent the game into overtime.

Mr. Ypsi

Thanks for the memory, Greg.

In 2001 the CCIW clearly had THREE FF-quality teams, but IWU eliminated Elmhurst in the sweet 16 (then beat #1 Chicago @ Chicago), Carthage just missed, and (if I'm remembering the dates correctly) Dennie Bridges' last team shocked everyone (including themselves) by even getting a Pool C selection.  They took full advantage of the second chance until Horace Jenkins decided to do his Michael Jordan imitation in the semi-final! :(

AndOne

Six of the 8 CCIW teams will be represented in this season's Deerfield Summer League held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Joy Of The Game facility. Games are played at 7, 8, and 9:00
on 2 courts.

Wesleyan, North Central, Elmhurst, Carthage, Augie, and North Park will field teams with North Central having 2 teams entered. Unlike previous years, there are no divisions this year.

Other "regional" teams in the league include Wash U, St. Norbert, Lake Forest, Loras, and Lawrence. Pretty good. No Dominican or Benedictine this year.

There are 6 non-affiliated teams entered. Last summer 2 of the "independents" were comprised partly of players from Northwestern, while most of the other teams are usually groups of kids who attend various schools but who either played together in HS or were HS conference opponents. The Wash U team has previously consisted of just a few actual WU players plus some D2 and other D3 kids from schools around the country

You are all of course right...I was thinking of the Elite Eight year! I remember hearing about that finish...I wonder if I can track down the game on film to see how close it was at the end.
