IWU finished 5th in the 2009-10 Directors' Cup standings...

http://www.iwusports.com/news/2010/6/28/GEN_0628104027.aspx?path=general

(Only Williams, Amherst, Wash U, and Middlebury finished higher.)

This marks the first time a CCIW school has finished in the Top 10.

Congratulations to all of the coaches and student-athletes who made this possible.

Brian Schlitter, the brother of Augie incoming freshman basketball player Kevin Schlitter, is making his Major League debut for the Cubs tonight.

My understanding is that Jonathan DeMoss began the last school year at Augie. If so, does anyone know if he left before or after the official start of basketball practice? I had heard he attended a few practices before leaving, but have no way of knowing if this is true. If so, would he not have to sit out this year at Wheaton under Article III, Section One of the CCIW By-Laws as shown below?

ARTICLE III: ELIGIBILITY.

Section 1: Transfers.    A transfer who participated in a sport at another conference school shall not be eligible to participate for a second CCIW school in that sport until one year after the student's last season of participation at his or her first school. For this bylaw, "participation" shall be defined as practice and/or competition at any time. (revised 1/09).

Or, am I interpreting the rule incorrectly?

Jonathan practiced for about a week. He quit on October 23. I'm not sure when he actually withdrew from school. My understanding was that because he didn't practice after the season started (games), he would be eligible this year. The clause you site would seem to contradict that. I'm not sure which is right, but I'd be willing to bet that Jonathan will be playing for Wheaton this season.

I'm not sure about the intricacies of the CCIW rule, but for purposes of the NCAA (and eligibility), he didn't use a year of eligibility... if he had practiced (or even met) with the team on the day of the first contest, then he would lose that year of eligibility.

That bylaw is rather vague...  In some respects, a tryout could really be seen as a practice... and so a player who got cut could (by the letter of the bylaw above) have to sit out a year even though he got cut from a different school.  That doesn't seem to make much logical sense... If you don't make team A, then there should be nothing precluding you from trying out for team B.  Quitting (prior to the first contest) could be seen as cutting yourself... though there might be some other issues there, potentially... I dunno.

MN hoopster Kevin Noreen (6'10") will attend West Virginia this fall.  Noreen selected BC during his junior year.  Noreen's dad played for North Park, and did well.  If Noreen fails to see quality minutes under Huggins, perhaps he'll  transfer to North Park.  Noreen has a 6'5" brother who will be a HS senior this year.

Is he going to West Virginia or Boston College?  I thought he was going to Boston College.  Has he changed his mind?

I believe BC got rid of its coach so the NCAA lets recruits back out of commitments.  The Mpls Star and Tribune reported the other day that Noreen committed to WVa for fall 2010.  The chatter I read was interesting.  No Big Ten school offered him a scholarship, not even Tubby.  What do BC and Huggins see in Noreen that others do not?

Not sure if anyone south of the border knows about this pro-am league starting in Milwaukee.  On the webpage there is a registration form and on the roster link there is a list of players.

Maybe we'll see some CCIW or ex-CCIW players.

NORTH CENTRAL 2010-2011 NON CONFERENCE SCHEDULE

November

19 & 20--Tip-Off Tourney---With Edgewood (WI), Bluffton (OH), & D2 Grand Valley St (MI)
23-------Aurora
27-------@ Illinois College
29-------@ Manchester (IN)

December

7--------Lake Forest
11-------Albion (MI)
17-------@ D2 Hawaii-Hilo
22-------@ Benedictine
27-------@ Rockford
30-------@ Adrian (MI)

The non conference portion of the baby birds (this will be a very young team) schedule will take an anticipated early step up against a D2 opponent on the 2nd night of the season.
The Cardinals "short" trip this year will consist of  a 3 day trip to Illinois College and Manchester, IN.  Playing at IC promises to be a tough battle. Manchester, which lost by just 2 at Wesleyan last season, returns their top 6 scorers.
Albion and Adrian both had winning seasons last year and both return their number 1, 2, and 4 scorers.
This year's "big" trip will feature a fabulous 6 day visit to the beautiful "Big Island" of Hawaii where the Cards will do business against D2 Hawaii-Hilo before returning to the frozen Midwest for 3 more away games to finish out the non-conference schedule.

Grand Valley State is coached by Ric Wesley, a good friend of Coach G who was one of his assistants at Lamar. He's built a very good program at GVSU. He's won 80% of his games in six years and they beat 8th-ranked Michigan State in an exhibition game in 2007-08.

Grand Valley is a tremendous program- they recruit against the DI MAC schools.  It would be great to see an upset here.

It certainly would be very sweet. And also a very BIG upset.

Sources have advised me that Kyle Miklasz will NOT be completing his matriculation to Illinois Wesleyan, but will instead be "transferring" to Illinois State where he will be joining the Redbirds basketball program as a "preferred" walk-on.
He has been playing with the Wesleyan team in the Deerfield Summer League.

If your sources are correct, this sounds like reason #618 to resume the rivalry.

On the other hand, if ISU keeps ducking us, we will FOREVER have the final win of the series! ;D

After 4 great seasons, GVSU has been in rebuilding mode (a very good rebuild) the past two with a mix and match collection of recruits, transfers, and D1 castoffs.....and have won about 67% of their games.   Last year they were 22-9 and ended up in the D2 tourney and upset Findley in round 1.  They lose no one off last years team to graduation.

Early in the year they lost to NAIA II Cornerstone by 19, and squeaked by MIAA Olivet by 8.

GVSU is still a great challenge for any D3 program, but they aren't quite the D2 powerhouse they were in 2008 when they went 36-1
