Incidentally, the fact that John Weiser has a tinge of homerism to his calls doesn't change the fact that he's pretty much my favorite college basketball play-by-play guy.

Anyone with a close tie to a school is going to have a "tinge of homerism" as a broadcaster.  I had one...you have one

I feel that I have to stick up for the Vikings on the air, because my broadcast partner's tinge of homerism during our broadcasts seems just as likely to be directed in favor of the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team. ;)

I agree with you about Vin Scully being the only truly neutral broadcaster affiliated with a team, BTW. There may be others out there, but I really can't think of any off of the top of my head.

Scully is from a bione era that included greats Red Barber and Mel Allen.
I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

The CCIW's 10-11 (.476) start in in-region games is absolutely awful, especially considering that 8 of the losses, in my opinion, were games we probably would have considered "upsets" before the season started:

- Carthage to Whitworth
- Elmhurst @ Cornell
- Elmhurst vs Hamline
- Millikin vs Franklin
- North Central vs Bluffton
- North Central vs Edgewood
- North Central vs Aurora
- North Park vs Concordia

(Wheaton @ Manchester, Elmhurst @ St. Norbert, and Millikin vs Nebraska Wesleyan on a neutral court were probably games you expect to lose coming in.)

6 of the games above were home games, and 1 was by the preseason #5 team in the nation on a neutral court.

The league could really use a 5-0 record the next 2 days to get back on track a little (although it seems that NCC might be an underdog at Illinois College).

How the CCIW fares in its 65 in-region non-conference games is very important in building a good Opponents' Winning Percentage (OWP).  With 34% of the precincts reporting, it looks like we're not going to build much of an advantage there this year.

Curious (and hopeful) that we might see TQ in St. Louis for IWU's game at Webster on Monday night.... while Webster has gotten off to a nice start, and shows at least 4 promising new faces who are contributors, I have no doubt it will be a learning experience for the Gorlocks, and the Titans will be the teachers.

Now, on Saturday North Park comes down to play at Fontbonne....  based on a reasonable performance as described by Denny McKinney at Moody, I would have thought Fontbonne had a chance at this one, but the team I saw the other night needs to improve if they are to beat a CCIW team, even if that team has been referred to as the infamous brain dead zombies.......

Will definitely be there Monday for the IWU game vs the Gorloks.

I thought about coming over for the North Park game @ Fontbonne, but I estimated that trip would cost me $953...

* 240 miles of gasoline = $30.00
* Popcorn and Diet Coke at Fontbonne = $3.00
* Wife @ Galleria Mall for 2 hours while I'm at game = $800
* Dinner @ Cafe Napoli = $120

Significant savings by staying home and listening to IWU vs Dominican instead.

  TQ    Not the right time of year to give the wife free reign at the Galleria while you watch hoops...   I can see that while you are a relative novice at married life, you are learning quickly!!!!! ;D ;D   See you Monday...

Carthage 82
Pacific 75

- Steve Djurickovic: 19 pts, 8 reb, 9 assists (11-13 FT)
- Max Cary: 16 pts
- Mitch Thompson: 15 pts, 7 reb
- Malcolm Kelly: 14 pts
- Tyler Pierce: 12 pts

Carthage: 4-26 3-point

(Carthage with just 6 points off the bench.)

Carthage held a fairly comfortable lead with 10 minutes to play, but under 1:00 to play Pacific had it down to 2 points.

Pacific was 8-17 last season, 4-12 in the NWC.  They only have two players taller than 6-4 on their roster.  I think it's safe to say this one ended up being a lot closer than expected.

"It all comes down to shooting for us.  If we go 13 for 26 from 3 instead of 4 for 26, then we win by 30 and everyone's laughin' and scratchin." - Bosko on WLIP postgame show

(I think Laughin' & Scratchin' is the track right after Rhymin' & Stealin' on Licensed to Ill.)

+1 for the ability to work a Beastie Boys reference into D3Hoops.  You see Chuck, in the late 80s there was this revolutionary white rap group called the Beastie Boys............sorry, that was a cheap shot, but I couldn't resist.
Hail, Hail, the gang's all here, all out for Wesleyan!

Certainly not CCIW POTW kind of numbers, but Matt Schick had a really good week off the bench for IWU...

* 12.7 ppg/5.0 rpg/2.3 apg/3.50 A:TO

* 13-21 FG (.619)

* 5-10 3-pt (.500)

* 7-8 FT (.875)

Schick is just such a solid player - does so many things well and just knows how to play the game.  Here is a blog entry I made about Schick 4 years ago, when he made his decision to attend IWU...

http://iwuhoops.blogspot.com/2007/04/lincolns-matt-schick-picks-wesleyan.html

As advertised, I think Schick just does a lot of things to help the team win.  Great to see him getting so many minutes (25 per game).

Above is a post I made about IWU's Matt Schick recently.  Below is a nice article from today's Pantagraph about Schick...

Probable starters for the IWU/Dominican game today at 3:00pm (under "Game Day Notes")...

It appears the shooting guard matchup is a good one.

Huge in-region game tonight as #24 Augustana hosts #14 Anderson at 7:30pm.

#24 Augustana (2-0)
G – Brian DeSimone, 6-1 Jr (7.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 3.0 apg)
G – Chris Anderson, 6-4 Jr (17.0 ppg, 2.5 rpg)
F – Bryant Voilles, 6-9 Jr (9.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 4.5 apg)
F – Brandon Kunz, 6-7 So (7.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg
F – Kyle Nelson, 6-9 Sr (20.0 ppg, 8.5 rpg)

#14 Anderson (2-0)
G - Jarrin Forte, 6-0 Fr (11.5 ppg, 0.5 rpg, 2.0 apg)
G - Gabe Miller, 6-3 Sr (10.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 9.5 apg)
F - Brock Morrison, 6-3 Jr (15.0 ppg, 9.5 rpg)
F - Andrew Bowman, 6-7 Sr (14.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg)
C - Andrew Jones, 6-6 Sr (16.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg)

I think there was naturally a lot of buzz around Augie's game vs Wash U earlier in the week.  But I'm quite sure that this is going to be a much tougher test for the Vikings.  #14 Anderson (23-6, 13-3 HCAC last year) is a very talented a balanced team.  Last year the Ravens beat St. Thomas in Round 1 of the NCAA tournament in Kenosha before falling to Carthage...

http://www.carthage.edu/athleticspages/mens/basketball/stats/2010/ncaa3.htm

I believe when all is said and done, either Anderson or St. Norbert will be considered the best Augie non-conference opponent (better than UW-Whitewater and Wash U).  Last year the Vikings won by 7 at Anderson, so you have to think Augie is a clear favorite tonight.

As far as the Fontbonne - North Park matchup today, much depends on the health of Fontbonne point guard Jarred #1 McCoy.....  He banged his knee hard up at Moody on Friday, and did not play Saturday or in the Tuesday game vs Robert Morris Springfield.   Without him, there was little running game, and the direction of the offense could only be described as meandering.  Justin is expected back today... he's quick up and down the court, can go all the way to the basket, and is capable of giving direction to the offense.   He's also the kind of defensive player who can generate steals... With him, North Park will see a far different Griff team than played Saturday or tuesday...

Will also be interesting to see if the Fontbonne coaching staff is still testing the waters with personnel, or if some people will get more, or less, time, based on their performance in the first 3 games...  Personally I was very disappointed in some individual performance on Tuesday, and hope people get the PT they earn.....

The Illinois College Blue Boys beat NCC 79-70 today. A really rough start to the season for the Cardinals.
