Using my medical school training supported by my Carthage degree- I have calculated that Carthage has a 75% chance of winning nationals.

The poll question on the D3Hoops homepage shows that 50% (1647 people) think UW Steven's Point and 25% (845 people) think IWU will win the title.

The transitive property of equality: Carthage > Hope > Wheaton >Chicago > IWU
coupled with the fact that Carthage has already beaten UWSP this season in a scrimmage gives rise to a statistically significance p-value of Carthage winning D3 Nats that is  greater than or equal to that of the Miami Heat winning the NBA finals.

No worries- I'll take the charge in returning this thread's mentality toward optimism.

Has North Park lost to Trine in consecutive years?  Pathetic.  I'm so glad I stayed home to watch the Sooner victory.  I'm equally satisfied that I let my nephew and son use the computer while I was in another room watching the football game instead of simultaneously watching the video stream and the football game on ABC.

Wow, no love for the CCIW as all teams drop in the latest poll.

DING!! DING!! DING!!

Carthage must find a way to keep teams off of the offensive glass if they want to survive the rest of the season.  The current effort is not going to cut it once CCIW play kicks in.

I hope no children were around Coach Trost when that ball fell through the net.

Carthage disemboweled Silver Lake this evening, 86-55. The Red Men were up by 39 with just under seven minutes left before Bosko emptied his bench; fifteen Red Men ended up playing in this game.

The big surprise of the night was North Central's blowout win over Lake Forest, 82-44. That's a head-scratcher, as Lake Forest is really not that bad of a team. NCC freshman C.J. Goldthree scored 29 points in only 21 minutes of action in this one.

Oh ye of little faith, look for the positives.  Yes, Silver Lake isn't good, but their center Zak Zablocki was pretty good and Carthage a) contained him and b) won the battle of the boards 54-38 which was nice to see.  Raul Guzman played almost 10 minutes before fouling someone (that's good) because they'll need him to back up Thompson and Pierce.  I like the effort out of Marlon Senior, who could cause mismatches with his power forward size and small forward skills.  And there was good defensive hustle out of the freshman that got time tonight.

Your intuition and/or sensory perception are in fine tune this evening Usee  :)

Greg references above a "disembowelment" by Carthage earlier tonight, which is also an apt description of the North Central 38 point blowout of Lake Forest.

Cast in the leading role was tonight's star of stars for the Cardinals in the form of freshman CJ Goldthree. As an initial example of his brilliant evening the halftime score was NCC 42, Lake Forest 23. Of NCC's 42, CJ had 23, thus matching LFC's team total. The 23 1st half points were tallied in only 13 minutes of PT! Used sparingly in the 2nd stanza, he added 6 points in 8 minutes, and so totaled his 29 points in 21 minutes. For the evening he hit on 12 of 16 attempts, including 4/5 on threes. He added 1/1 FT to finish with 29.

7:15 remained in the 1st half with the score 21-16 NCC when Goldthree basically took the game over, scoring all 18 of the Cards points in an 18-5 run over the span of 6+ minutes. During the explosion, CJ hit a trio of 3 pointers in 55 seconds. His display left the Lake Forest coaching staff and bench shaking their heads in disbelief. This feeling was further enhanced when Derek Raridon banked in a long 3 at the buzzer to give the Cardinals their 42-23 halftime advantage.
NCC then opened the 2nd half with a 13-2 run to put any thoughts of a possible Lake Forest comeback bid to bed. The run was highlighted by Kevin Gillespie's trio of threes within just slightly more than a 2 minute period.

For the evening Goldthree was supported by Derek Raridon and PG Kevin Gillespie who both hit for 12 points.
Gillespie played an outstanding all-around game with 12 points, and 7 assists vs only 1 TO. Additionally, the 5'11" Gillespie impersonated Mr. Windex by pulling down 9 boards to tie LFC stud Travis Clark for game high honors.
Cardinal frosh center jack Burchette turned in another nice game going 3/6 and 2/2 for 8 points to go with 7 rebounds, mostly against Clark, the equal of any CCIW big man in my book.

As in the last game victory over Albion, much of the Cardinal domination was a consequence of their new "Spider" defense which forced the Forresters into 22 TOs, and resulted in the Cardinals garnering a resounding 17 steals.

All 16 of the Cardinals who dressed saw the floor.

On Sunday, NCC leaves for a week in Hawaii where they will take on D2 Hawaii-Hilo on the Big Island after spending the first 4 days of the trip in Honolulu.
Perhaps not Asia or Italy, but a pretty nice break from the deep freeze we're currently experiencing.   :)

Oh, and I'm going to add that I saw no letdown once Carthage got the big lead, which is the first time I haven't seen a letdown and the opposing team start to get back into the game.  Things slowed down at about the 8 minute mark in the second half when Bosko unloaded the bench, and then unloaded the bench again, but the starters and key subs kept up the intensity.

It's not simply a useless exercise because Silver Lake isn't good. Silver Lake isn't a D3 team; therefore, it's a waste of one of Carthage's 11 non-conference opportunities, because it won't count in the eyes of the selection committee if the Red Men need a Pool C berth on Selection Sunday. If you're Bosko Djurickovic and you just want to grab an easy win in the midst of your non-con schedule, pick up the phone and give a call to the coach of Maranatha Baptist, or call the coach of Marian or the coach of Rockford. Those are below-par opponents who are not only relatively close to the Carthage campus, they also give you an easy W that counts towards your in-region winning percentage on Selection Sunday.

Only schedule a game against a non-region D3 team or a team that isn't D3 at all when it can help your team. Hope and Calvin are perennially tough opponents, so it behooves Carthage to keep playing them every year in the CCIW/MIAA Classic. Playing a tough NAIA opponent can help strengthen your team, too (Cardinal Stritch certainly qualified as a tough NAIA opponent last season, but this season -- in which Carthage is schedueld to play the Wolves -- it's perhaps less true). And, of course, playing a D1 or D2 school is a no-brainer, because you not only step up in class in terms of opponent strength (usually), you also get a payout under NCAA rules.

Silver Lake College is a poor opponent, so playing SLC doesn't help the Red Men in terms of making them stronger. And Silver Lake is not an in-region D3 opponent, so playing SLC doesn't help the Red Men in terms of their in-region record. Bob's spoken several times now in this room about how Carthage put itself on thin ice in terms of Pool C potential by only scheduling four of its 11 non-conference games against in-region opponents. I remember thinking the same thing last summer when I first saw Carthage's 2010-11 schedule. Everybody knows that I take a backseat to no one in my respect for Bosko, but unfortunately he tends to have a rather cavalier attitude towards scheduling -- and this year it might come back to bite the Red Men in the butt.

I know that Oshkosh plays Silver Lake twice this year and that they have the last couple of years too.  I wonder if it's a coincidence that they were near the bottom of the conference last year and that they were picked #9 in the conference in the preseason SID poll...

Of course, that was the same poll that had River Falls 8th, so it may not hold much stock this season!

Ok, I was talking about the game and the progress I saw in the some of the Redman.  I don't completely understand the NCAA selection rules for D3 (mostly because they don't seem to make sense; Carthage vs. Whitworth playing in Hawaii is in region but Carthage vs. Hope isn't?), but you also seem to contridict yourself.  Why is playing Carthage playing out of region games D3 games or playing an NAIA (or NCAA 1 or 2) ok, but playing Silver Lake isn't?

Oh, and if anyone can point me to a good FAQ for D3 basketball selection, that'd be awfully useful.
