Yeah, I'll have to hope for an auspiciously-timed rainout at some point. Otherwise, I'm out of luck. I wear too many hats in our league -- head coach, scorekeeper, and occasional designated hitter for my team, commissioner and frequent umpire for the league -- to get away with skipping out on softball in order to go up to Deerfield to watch summer-league basketball.

Greg, I figured you to be the prototype five-tool softball player, not just a DH.
By that, I mean your pockets might contain a wrench, hammer, screwdriver, drill and pliers (ha ha), making for noisy running and painful sliding.
Does your batting resemble that of Al Simmons 1930?

or Biff Pocoroba 1978?

I always thought it was a shame that the Mets and Braves couldn't work out a deal back in the '70s so that catcher Biff Pocoroba and reliever Bob Apodaca could've formed a battery.

The Deerfield (JOG) Summer League schedule is out.
Games will be played at 7, 8, and 9 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning on June 7th. No games on 7/12. The regular season concludes on Aug 9th. Playoffs follow beginning either Aug 10th or sometime the following week.

CCIW teams in the league are:

North Central--2 teams
Carthage-------2 teams
North Park
Augie
Elmhurst
Wesleyan

Other teams---Lake Forest (2 teams), Lawrence, Wash U., Loras, St. Norbert.

Several other "independent" teams made up of college players from the area.
There are 23 teams in the league this year.

Based on history, changes to the schedule should be anticipated at any point in the season. Check with your team or JOG before hitting the road to Deerfield, especially during the last 2-3 weeks.

Mark, do you have a link to the schedule that you can provide by any chance?  When I went to the JOG website, I saw the league referenced but no clickable link to get to a schedule or any other information about it.  With the league starting in 5 days, I would think the schedule must be somewhere and with each team playing only once a week, there are bound to be some nights more interesting than others.

AndOne

Pete--

No direct link to JOG. Don't believe they put one up.
But, I did secure a copy of the schedule via e-mail from one of the players.
Is your check in the mail?    ;)

Gregory Sager

Does he make the check out to you or to North Central? 'cause it's a little-known fact that Pete's lot in life is to write checks to as many CCIW schools as possible. ;)

Oh, in this case to me.  ;)
But, I'm sure NCC would gladly accept a second check made payable to the MMP--Merner Modernization Project.   ???   :-X

with montreal's cocoa laboy, and outfielder cocoa crisp
instead the Mets started out with Ed Kranepool from Monroe High School in the Bronx (from the roof of his high school he could see Shea Stadium); and Marvelous Marv Throneberry, and a lot of guys that were past their prime: Richie Ashburn, Frank Thomas, and Roger Craig.
I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

Dennis---

You're not a fan of the "hanger?"   :o
Given what I understand is massively thick brick walls throughout, and over a foot of concrete supporting the balcony, it just might take an atomic bomb to make much of a dent in the hanger. Quite a contrast to North Park's palatial "crackerbox" which could likely be leveled with a cherry bomb or two.  :)

Gregory Sager

The crackerbox consists of cinderblocks and steel I-beams, so it's pretty sturdy. On the other hand, the adjacent classroom building, Carlson Tower, has a massive crack in the foundation that no doubt reflects some corners being cut in terms of the cost of materials and construction when ever-thrifty North Park erected the building in the 1960s. I keep waiting for Carlson Tower to topple over into the North Branch of the Chicago River like Edgar Allan Poe's House of Usher.

El Correcto - North Park went everywhere - including the government for science grants - to build the carlson complex - which meant they had to use the lowest bidder on the project - I would imagine North Park has paid twenty times the original costs of the complex in correcting the shoddy original construction.

That's exactly what I meant. The thriftiness that led NPC to apply for and use government funding resulted in the requirement to hire the lowest-bidding contractor, which in turn led to the shoddy construction. And I have no doubt that North Park has had to pay through the nose for remedial repairs ever since. The old adage, "You get what you pay for," was never more true.

Moral of the story: A parsimonious approach to the use of institutional funds, particularly when construction is involved, will often backfire and cause an institution to ultimately spend more money than it would've if it had spent the money to do it properly in the first place.
