I certainly did not "basically just repeated" what you said about Carthage's chances to finish in the top 4 in CCIW basketball this season. You said , they should, I said they could. I also pointed out the fact that tjey did NOT finish in the top 4 last year and lost a D3 FIRST team All-American from that team and asked if you honestly felt they are a better team without him. You never answered that question.

Carthage was essentially the same team the last two years.  One year, they won the CCIW and went to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament; the second year they finished tied for third and missed the tournament because of the CCIW's tiebreaker system.  So, I think they were a better team last year than their final record and hence, it isn't a fifth place team replacing a D1 All-American, but a team that probably should have been tied for first replacing an All-American.  They have two fifth team Illinois All-State freshmen coming in (on a list where most of the players were going to D1 teams) and the encourging development of Malcom Kelly and Nick Bauch; I'm pretty ok thinking this is going to be a fine team.

And, you're right; I couldn't follow your incoherant argument on how good you think Carthage is against the rest of the CCIW, so I wasn't right for me to try to repeat in a simple form what you were trying to say. Maybe next time you can try putting in a concluding sentence or a short summary.  But at least you went a whole post without being degrading towards a student-athlete, so I gotta give you credit for that.

bopol---

I clearly indicated that rather than agreeing with your statement that Carthage should make the CCIW tournament this season, I said they could.
Apparently you are unable to comprehend the difference between should and could.

As far as your assertion that "Carthage was essentially the same team the last two years." Really? In 2009-2010 they were 12-2 in the conference, and 24-6 overall. Last year, they went 9-5 in the conference, missed qualifying for the conference tournament after hosting it the previous year, and finished 16-9 overall. Yes, clearly the same team.  ::)

And, while we are on the subject, am I really the incoherENT one of us, or is the term more applicable to the person who accuses me of being incoherANT?   :)
You asked that I put in a concluding sentence or short summary. Will that do?   ;D

I'm sorry about the incoherent, but at least I didn't type 'tjey'.  I guess I could have picked on that, but I knew it was a small mistake in your overall argument.

The players were the same; the record's different.  The truth of the team is somewhere in the middle; I figure, which is 23-7 in league play the last two years.

I like your use of emotioncons.  It's another expression of the immaturity that I've grown to expect from you.

I like emoticons.  I think they are cool.  And I can't speel eyether.

I am hoping that this year's North Park team will be in better physical shape than any of the last dozen or so teams I have seen on the Viking hardcourt.  So many times I expected that a team with as much athletic talent as North Park continued to put on the court would get stronger at the end of games - but the opposite was too often true.  This was a team that folded down the stretch - could not keep up defensive intensity - and despite having more athletic talent than just about any team they played knew/displayed nothing of good team defense, rebounding position, or able to pressure the ball.  How very sad.

We wait for that bright and glorious day.
I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

Potentially a big addition for Wheaton as Aaron Garriott will return to the Thunder after over a year of rehab - it was thought his basketball career was over.  Garriott is a senior academically but a junior athletically.

Here is an article from May 2009 regarding his transfer from D1 SIU-E to Wheaton...

When Garriott transfered to Wheaton, I looked at him as a sure all-CCIW player.

I wonder if that means his dad will return to CCIW Chat as well. ;) Seriously, I enjoyed bantering with him. It was good, clean fun. I'm a little disappointed in the rather sour tone that CCIW Chat has taken on recently.

Speaking of tone and CCIW Chat, last Saturday night I made my first visit to the Wheaton campus since Dave's death. As much fun as it was to soak in the fantastic atmosphere of a legitimate soccer grudge match between NPU and Wheaton, it felt a little empty without Dave being there. I think I'll miss his presence even more acutely when it's King Arena that I'm visiting, rather than Joe Bean Stadium.

I agree - here's an example of sour tone...

Raul Guzman also missing from Carthage roster.

Not surprising considering El Hombre Rotundo was missing in action at the end of last year. He did not appear in the last 9 games of the season due to back spasms which were widely reported to be related to his weight of approximately 290 pounds, after weighing in at about 240 as a freshman.

It seems sort of sad that Guzman won't be playing this year, now that you've concocted such a great nickname for him, Mark. ;D

Flipping hilarious, Greg.  Class act all the way.

You were the one complaining of the sour tone and I'm just pointing out that you create the tone as much as anyone.  Doesn't have to be that way...

Wheaton's going to have a logjam of 6'3'' wings battling for playing time.   Jon DeMoss and Tyler Peters split time last year as freshman and did a good job for 1st year players.  Now put Michael Kvam and Garriott in there coming off of injuries.

Is it possible that Garriott plays more of a point guard role?  I've never really seen him on the court.  Aside from one of their newcomers, Wheaton doesn't really have a true point.

Really, besides McCrary and maybe Pflederer, I am not sure who is going to end up starting for Wheaton.

Garriott is a not a wing - he's a "combo guard."  I think he can easily play PG in the CCIW.  Some video from HS...

Actually, bopol, I was referring to your sparring with AndOne, which had degenerated into name-calling and silly sniping over spelling mistakes. As for my own current tone, it is neither sweet nor sour not salty nor bitter. I would say it's more umami. ;)

Really, though, it was just a goofy little nickname, and you got waaay too worked up over it. It's an inescapable fact that Raul Guzman is rotund. Are you denying it?

Now, if you guys would like to stay on point and go back to bickering about where Carthage deserves to be slotted in the preseason poll rather than about who wins the CCIW Chat Spelling Bee or whether or not Raul Guzman is rotund, I would readily applaud that. We'd actually be discussing basketball, which would be a nice change of pace. ;)

Honestly, Greg, it's rude and unneccessary.  I don't know if you are too dense to see it or what, but next time you are wondering around North Park's campus, try to opening your mind to learn some of those Christian values they talk about.

If you want to talk basketball and not make fun of individual players, here's my preseason ranking:

1. Augustana
2. Wheaton
3. North Central
4. Carthage
5. IWU
6. Elmhurst
7. North Park
8. Millikin

My opinion:
* Augustana is most likely to be the best club in the CCIW.
* Wheaton still has Tim McCrary and enough around him to be a top club.
* On North Central, I'm just not on that bandwagon yet.  They were 15-11 overall and I'm not convinced that last season's CCIW play wasn't a fluke.  Mind you, I don't think they are bad, but I just think they'll have a nice 17-9 year or so, instead of a 21-5 year.
* Carthage has some fine players stepping in and were better than they played last year.  I'm worried about guard depth, though and the loss of SteveD is, of course, huge.
* IWU is still a fine club and I don't really distinguish between North Central, Carthage and IWU.  I just think none of them are better than Wheaton or Augustana and are better than Elmhurst, NPU and Millikin.
* Elmhurst and North Park will probably be well below 500.  It's a coin flip on which is better because of North Park's new coach.  They could go either way this year, but even if things go perfectly, I don't think they'll be ahead of the top 5.

Give me a break. ::) Now you're really making a mountain out of a molehill. Was it "rude and unnecessary" to call William Perry "the Refrigerator"? How about Robert "Tractor" Traylor? John "Jumbo" Elliott? Was it "rude and unnecessary" to refer to Charles Barkley as "the Round Mound of Rebound"? All sports nicknames referencing a player's size. All completely harmless.

Am I the only one who doesn't remember this guy at all from when he played for Carthage? Did he actually play for Carthage? I see that he is listed as a letter-winner for 2002-03 on the Red Men's website, but his name doesn't ring a bell at all for me.
