I can only trust the CCIW room to get a correct answer....

It's the end of the game.. Team A scores a basket with 3 seconds left to go ahead of Team B... Team B gets the ball to go full court and  they can run the baseline with the ball on the inbounds....   they can't get it in... they call a time out....  when they get the ball again, can they run the baseline after the timeout.... does the timeout take away that capability?  The MIAA room conversation seems to be saying it does, which really surprised me...  Does a timeout impact the ability to run the baseline with the ball?

The MIAA situation was different.  Rather than a timeout, a first attempted throw-in was batted back out.  NOW (with subsequent play) the inboards attempt is no longer after a basket, and therefore the person cannot run the baseline.  I would doubt a timeout would ever affect rules that otherwise apply.

But I will yield to an official if someone knows otherwise.

CCIWFAN3

Mr. Ypsi, you are correct. A timeout doesn't affect the run of the baseline. Once the ball is in play...then the run of the baseline is off.

hopefan

aaaahhh Ypsi, I get it now!!!!   I did not use the fact that the first one had been batted back OB....   once again, my old age senility never fails to amaze me.... which brings about the question, if you're senile. but you recognize it, are you senile? :o :o ;D ;D
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

NPU is getting better, and I hate to keep sounding like Mr. Negative. ......

There is no one on this board who deserves to have his team have a great season than Mr. Sager.

Greg, thanks for all the good culinary and team fashion statement and color advice.  (I'm actually color blind, so go figure!  It's all black, white and gray to me!).   Nice to know pea soup is so widely available in case I need a touch up on my Titan green when next in Chicago!  Yes, taste and beauty are clearly in the eye (and stomach) of the beholder.

I share Sac's warm sentiment about NP getting better and having a good season for Greg's sake.  He's been in the wilderness and suffering far too long.  Save for the two games vs. my Titans, I hope NP wins as many games as is humanly possible, given NP's improved talent and new coaching.  It does sound more promising.  I would especially love to see them put a few losses on some of the contenders.  If the way they played in the second half last Saturday is any portent, then perhaps this will come to pass.

"If you are senile and recognize it, are you really senile?"  Well, a good question.  My Mother, who is brutally clear-minded at 93, claims I have a condition known as "premature senility," so I suppose it might be possible to be in the early throws of such a condition, yet still have self-awareness.  With my totally white hair and beard, she also claims I have "premature eminence."  So take your pick.   What was your name again?  (hopefan?).  Ypsi seems to be doing pretty well, well, for an old guy.  In my case, sadly, I seem to have the senility one day and the eminence the next.  Such is life for an IWU70.

While I agree that Greg has (unfairly) suffered in the wilderness for quite awhile, let's not get overly sappy - he does have 4 more national titles to savor than some of us, and 5 more than the rest! ;D

Yeah, yeah, I know: "What have you done for me lately?!" 8-)

Greg on green: "It's simply an unattractive color.... If it weren't for photosynthesis and my need for food and oxygen, I'd have no use for the color at all."

Aw, Greg, Kermit just came to me sobbing: "Didn't I already tell him it's not easy being green?"  May the (formerly) Jolly Green Giant torment your nightmares! >:(

I will admit that I like that Kermit song. And I like Al Green.

OK, there's my peace offering to IWU for the day. ;)

I agree with Titan Q that Scarlota's loss is huge to Augie. As I remember, he was rated one of the 50 top IL HS seniors when he graduated from LaGrange (?)  IWU heavily recruited him. He was a true back-to-the basket post player with clever moves to the basket. Skills like he had can make a big difference in D3 b'ball.

Luke Scarlata graduated from Morton HS in Berwyn, IL.

The linked article below is one from when he was being recruited. In it he talks about Augie's "great medical school." The revelation at the time that Augie had a medical school was quite surprising to many posters who had been pretty familiar with the Rock Island school for some time, but still weren't aware of the existence of a medical school being a part of the Augie campus.  Perhaps Mr. Scarlata left the team in order to devote more time to his medical curriculum courses.  ;)

Pete McBride and I were laughing about a similar joke along those lines at last Wednesday's NPU @ Elmhurst game. We were speculating that Scarlata had left the team in a fit of pique because he had just discovered, halfway through his junior year, that Augustana doesn't have a medical school.

Trust me, Chuck, I've never asked for anyone's pity. There's no reason that I have to love North Park sports, any more than I have to love the Cubs. I'm not masochistic.

And, frankly, you're absolutely right. My alma mater has more national championships in men's basketball than anyone else in D3, and that's certainly a point for pride for me and every other Parker who's ever watched a game in the crackerbox. And I was there to see three of the five, so I've received far more pleasure from NPU basketball than I feel that I'm entitled to have. I don't whine about the fact that the program has been down for two decades now. First of all, whining doesn't do you any good (unless you're a four-year-old and your mother caves in easily). Second, it's not a very attractive activity. Third, it's only basketball.

I strongly doubt that anyone who doesn't actually play for or coach the Vikings wants to see them win more than I do, but I don't feel that that entitles me to any special dispensation in terms of the sympathies of others. Nevertheless, it's nice to see people extend good wishes to NPU basketball on my behalf, and I do appreciate it.

Ok but I'm sure IWU70 meant to write 'Save for three games vs. Titans' we're not giving away any ground for conference and/or the conference tournament  ::)

Hum, Mark, maybe Mom's right!

Mr. Ypsi

Greg, peace offering accepted.

But just in case there is a recurrence, I've alerted Mean Joe Green about your color phobia. ;)

Titan Q

I'll say basically the same thing I did before the IWU/Wheaton game last week - these are two extremely even teams.  I just can't find much separation at all.

Should be another tremendous Division III basketball game.  It will probably come down to a couple big plays down the stretch.

iwu70

Greg, peace offering accepted.  Just giving you a little cheek, knowing you can take it (and give it back perfectly well).  Kermit is smiling.  The jolly green giant . . . I have no idea.  I actually love and respect your loyalty to the Parkers.  Have learned greatly, been entertained greatly by your posts over the years.  Wish we had more folks, as informed and passionate about the DIII game as you are from all the other teams in the CCIW.   Hope the NP program comes 'round, especially this year.  Guess we have to have pity mostly on the Big Blue, speaking of colors which we Green weenies traditionally despised.  Can't think of any blue soups just now . . . navy bean, beet or bortsch?  (I'm sure Q will help me with the spelling here).

One of my funniest experiences when living in Hong Kong was meeting and greeting the Millikin choir, performing in Asia, accompanied by a dear friend of mine who works for MU, who happens to be an IWU grad, sister of one of my Wesleyan classmates.  And, to my amazement, when I met and saw all the Millikin kids in their Hong Kong hotel, they all had an IWU-like green T-shirt on.  To say I was stunned would be an understatement.  Perhaps it was just my color blindness playing tricks on me again, but I don't think so!

Should be a great game in The Shirk again tomorrow night -- Doggies vs. our GREEN Titans.

My congrats as well to Mssr. Raridon for CCIW Player of the week.  He had a great week.  I actually thought another player from the NCC squad, in that big win vs. Augie, might get the award this week.  Just say'in.

IWU70

iwu70

My keys for the IWU-Augie game tomorrow night:

*  How well the IWU bigs play, scoring and rebounding, vs. the Augie giants.
*  How IWU handles the defensive pressure, aggressive physical game (and how the refs call the game related to this defensive style of play).
*  Whether IWU wins the TO battle, takes good care of the ball, especially down the stretch, if a very close game, which it is likely to be.

As Q has outlined, very closely matched teams, both with deep rotations.  Let hope the Shirk crowd again is large and loud, with pep band brilliant and loud too.    Should be a great atmosphere for an exciting, close DIII match-up.

I see the Titans slipped into the Top 25 in the D3hoops rankings this week, displacing Wheaton.  IWU women are also finally getting some votes, though not yet in the top 25.  I think AC men fell to 6th or so, following their loss to NCC.
