Looks like a pretty close match-up, again -- IWU vs. Wooster.  Some home court advantage, better record by Wooster.  How tough a conference does Wooster play in?

DP, I guess Ron Paul gets spared.

On the stooges, is it Groucho or Karl?  :)  My favorite was always Harpo.

I'll leave Q and Mssr. Sager to their own devices.  They are "Gurus of the Board," afterall.

Great time to be a Greenie Weenie fan, and to be cheering for all Five CCIW teams in the DIII Dance.  I was most impressed with the Carthage women taking down Whitewater and DePauw, then our Titan men taking down #1 Hope @DeVos.  Titan women are just awesome so far, though Mt. Union poses an altogether more serious foe.

The Stooges were Larry, Moe, and Curly. I believe you're thinking of the Marx brothers.  ;D

Massey Index has the CCIW as the 3rd strongest league in 2011-12 and the NCAC as #5.

Yes, I get confused with my "stooges."   Not Mitt, Newt and Rick?   :)

Oh well, back to basketball.

Most years it is very top heavy, with just Woo and Witt.  This year they did seem to step it up a notch, with OWU, Wabash, and Denison (and, to some degree, DePauw) all acquitting well.  Losing Earlham and gaining DePauw was a huge plus for them.  They're not the WIAC (or CCIW), but they may be a bottom-of-the-top-ten conference.

Here is the NCAA tournament record from 2002 to 2011 for the top 8 conferences (from Gordon Mann's guide)

No. Conference  Tourney Games   Won-Loss   Winning %
1 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) 47  32-15  68.1%
2 University Athletic Association (UAA) 61  41-20  67.2%
3 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) 66  44-22  66.7%
4 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) 74  49-25  66.2%
5 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) 45  29-16  64.4%
6 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) 39  25-14  64.1%
7 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) 49  31-18  63.3%
8 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) 33  20-13  60.6%

During this span, Wooster has been to the Final Four three times and Wittenberg once.

Thanks, WooScotsFan, very useful.

Will be interesting to see what these numbers are after the 2012 tourney.  WIAC hasn't had such a good tourney this go 'round.  I think only Whitewater remains, right?    NCAC and CCIW would presumably improve their standing somewhat, no?

Should be a fantastic weekend of D3hoops at Wooster.

Looks like both  of these conferences are pretty evenly matched. Would love to see an NC/IWU rematch.

The perils of arbitrary time periods (and 'missing' data):

Go back just one more year (2001) and the CCIW was 9-3.  What was the NCAC?

Add in 2012 (so far, and only beginning 2002)) and the CCIW is 37-18 (67.3%); the NCAC is 33-17 (66%).

Over that time period, the CCIW was represented by 7 (of 8) teams.  Did the NCAC send anyone but Woo and Witt?

I think I read in an earlier post (either here or the NCAC board) that the NCAC has been mostly dominated by Woo and Witt. up until recently.

2010-2011 D3Hoops 1st team all-american, and current NCC graduate assistant coach Ian Franks graduated from Wooster just last year. While at Woo, he naturally played against Witt throughout his career. As such, the Cardinals will hopefully be able to pick up some good "insider' information about Friday's, and possibly Saturday's, opponents.
