Before Basketball takes center stage-an amazing finish in the men's 400 meters at nationals: Dan Benton (NCC) edges Kevin Cunningham (McMurray) by a time of 48.004 to 48.006. What a race! Back to bball.

Congrats to IWU.  Considering they were one of the last four in (that's what the Pool C board thought), it's great to see an underdog make it.  I guess it makes Stevens Point's loss to IWU not as bad! LOL

Mr. Ypsi

I was out with the family this evening, then couldn't get on the boards when I got home.  I figured it was just too busy, but judging from the near total lack of posts on ANY of the boards, I assume the site must have crashed and just come back!

Woo Hoo!  The Titans are going to Salem AND to Holland - BOTH teams in the FF! ;D

NCF

Congrats to IWU on getting both teams to the finals. That doesn't happen very often. Good luck to all! Way to represent the CCIW.

Quote from: PointSpecial on March 10, 2012, 04:49:40 PMFor what it's worth, I think that the two students who did the video broadcast of the Wheaton/Whitewater game did a pretty good job, overall.  I think they would be the first to admit that they weren't perfect and are still learning... but they also were doing their second game in a row, having done the Va Wesleyan/Whitworth game immediately preceding the Wheaton/Whitewater game.

I mean, if you really have a problem with it, ask for your money back.

Oh. It was a free service provided by the (public) university.  Guess you can't.

They are decent announcers but seeing as the majority of the listeners are people supporting the two schools it occurs to me perhaps the biggest measuring stick of competence is knowing who is in the game and how to say their name. It takes about a minute to figure that out and is part of any good broadcaster's prep work. This lack of prep makes the school look bad. I know the football guys don't make that mistake.

I completely agree with USee on this. Even if you've never done a broadcast before, or worked the P.A. mic before, common sense dictates that you should learn how to pronounce people's names before you speak into a live mic. Not only are you making the institution you represent look bad if you botch names, you make yourself look bad as well. It's not as though there's some sort of heavy burden involved in getting the pronunciations right. You simply check with an assistant coach or a trainer from the other team during warmups. You say, "Excuse me, but could I go over the pronunciations for your team with you?" I've never encountered anyone who has refused to do that for me. It's basic common courtesy, and the opposing staff appreciates it when you take the (minimal) time and trouble to do your job properly and make sure that you do right by the other team.

By no means am I saying it wasn't a valid criticism.  It is valid.

Personally, I think it's most valid coming from you (or, perhaps, someone like Q) who HAS done broadcasts.  I've never done any broadcasts (though I have thought about potentially doing it in the future), but if I did, I would make for darn sure that I was saying the right names... and if I discovered I was mispronouncing a name, I would make a point to correct myself and apologize for previous errors when I had an opportunity.

I think part of good broadcasting is being conscious of what it is you're actually saying, and this includes pronunciation.  But, all told, and despite the mispronunciation of several of the opponents' names, I still hold to the fact that I thought those guys did a pretty good over-all job.

As I said before, it wasn't perfect, but these are college kids.  Though they were the home-town crew, it wasn't egregiously so... I've listened to plenty of broadcasts where I simply had to turn it off because it was so partisan.

I believe this is the list of schools who've reached the Final Four in both men's and women's in the same year...

2011-12 - Illinois Wesleyan
2008-09 - Washington U.
2006-07 - Washington U.
2003-04 - UW-Stevens Point
1988-89 - Centre

The first and still most accurate description of the D3 Championship BeltTM thread.

Congrats to IWU on making Salem.

Its always interesting to view a team in person and you just can kind of tell they 'get it'.  Good luck in Salem.

Congrats to IWU for advancing to the Final Four yet again. I cannot tell a lie though; I am going to be rooting for MIT next weekend. You guys can all blame devildog29. Also I think you Titan people should practice sharing better. :P

Point, save the egregious pronunciation issue I thought the UWW boys were pretty good. Not unbiased but also not inappropriate.

Greg, I've heard your broadcast and at least you get the names right!!  :o

Congrats to the Titans. They definitely earned their way to Salem.

The Roop

Well, an IWU vs. UW-Whitewater Championship game could be in the works. Unfortunately, with so many host teams losing this year; IWU vs. UW-Whitewater could be a 1st round match up next year.
