What also got me (I think you had it right but not your partner) was Wez-lyan - it is Wes-lyan.  (Though, I confess, with no recording devices back then, it is impossible to know how John (or Charles) Wesley pronounced it!)

This was my beef after watching the archive.  The play-by-play guy (not Dave) mispronounced "Wesleyan" (using "Wezzleyan") the entire game.  Seems like extremely lazy broadcasting on behalf of the play-by-play guy to get the school name wrong.  For pete's sake, he could have just asked his broadcast partner.

FYI - EVERYONE mispronounced this in Salem. They are ODAC (i.e. Virginia Wesleyan) and I heard the video presentations at the banquet (and in the front lobby), coaches and players from other teams, "dignitaries", etc. ALL mispronounce Wesleyan. I wasn't about to go around to every single person I heard say it wrong and correct them... furthermore, I didn't see it happening from the IWU contingent. :)

Some of my fellow alums mispronounce it to this day.

Just Bill

And sometimes the disticntion between the two is so slight, that 99% of those listening wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

The pronunciation stuff is funny since there are people in Illinois that pronounce it Illinois or Ellinois.  And then you get the ones who add the noise or noy.

You may just be hearing regional dialects. :)

This is probably it.  We moved here from Massachusetts, where there's a city called Quincy, pronounced Quin-zee.  Quincy, Illinois, is pronounced Quin-see.

Perfect topic for an off-season thread.

Final Top 25 poll...

http://www.d3hoops.com/top25/men/2011-12/final

#3  IWU

#13 Wheaton

#16 North Central

A pleasant surprise to see IWU #3; I expected MIT 3, IWU 4.  I'm guessing winning AT Hope and AT Wooster really impressed the voters.

sac

2nd round games for #2 and #3

Cabrini 90-88 OT over Hobart
IWU 108-101 2OT over Hope

This seems generous to me. ??? :-\

Winning @ #6 Hope (then #1) in 2 OT, with 3675 in the house, makes the #3 ranking generous?

Cabrini led UW-Whitewater by 18 in the national championship game and lost by 3.  OT win vs Hobart or not, Cabrini made a solid claim to #2.

I don't have as much of an issue with Cabrini.

Wheaton beat IWU 2 out of 3, North Central beat IWU 2 out of 2.  Its seems like a lot of the regular season was dismissed in favor of a 3 weekend run of good play.

Don't get me wrong, I've actually had IWU and the other 2 CCIW's very high all season, but ranking IWU ahead of Wheaton and NCC just doesn't feel right to me.

I guess I'll ask this, where do you rank Cabrini or IWU if they don't get out of round 2?

If you don't have an issue with Cabrini, I think it's hard to have an issue with IWU -- the Titans lost to Cabrini on a neutral court in the final seconds.  Everyone left that game basically saying, "Those are two very different but very even teams."  There just wasn't any separation between IWU and Cabrini.

During the regular season, yes, Wheaton and NCC played better than IWU.  But in the sectionals, North Central lost to Wittenberg, and then the next night, on the same neutral floor, IWU pounded Wittenberg.  IWU played better than NCC at the end of the season...when things matter most, right?

To your final question, I don't see how that's relevant -- because both teams did get out of Round 2, and got to Salem.

I think the voters treat the final poll as a snapshot of who they feel the best 25 teams were at the end of the season.

Dave 'd-mac' McHugh

You have to treat it as the best teams in the country now... there is nothing left to play with.

That being said... some teams were ranked WAY too high.

i always have an issue with IWU.

I agree that their lackluster performance against the top teams in the league - losing 4 out 5 was not taken into consideration by a bunch of post=season voters.

That's one of the reasons post-season polls are WORTHLESS.
I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

And did Augustana not prove the same about pre-season polls?

You were on the right track Sac, you just added 3 extra words. Your sentence beginning with It should have started with A.
