NPU's incoming freshmen to date:

Ryan Hyrn, 6'0, San Ramon, CA / California HS
Rodney Clarke, 5'11, Memphis, TN / St. Benedict of Auburndale
Craig Welch, 6'0, Grand Rapids, MI / Northpointe Christian
David Johansson, 6'1, Norrkoping, Sweden / Norrkoping BK
Per Magnus Muren, 6'3, Asker, Norway / Asker Aliens

This David Johansson isn't the same David Johansson who as a North Park freshman just finished eighth in the nation in the javelin toss at the D3 track & field championships in Claremont, CA this past week. He's from Sweden, too, but about one out of every thirty Swedes has the surname "Johansson", and I'll bet that a bunch of them are named "David'. He's also not the former lead singer of the New York Dolls who later took the stage name "Buster Poindexter" and sang the huge '80s dance-club hit "Hot Hot Hot". ;)

Not to mention that the stage performer known as "Buster Poindexter" was David Johansen (just ONE S) whose father was not from Sweden, but rather from neighboring Norway.   ;)

Keep up the spirit--Come on let's do it--Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot
I'm hot--You're hot--He's hot--She's hot   ;D

Congrats to all you CCIW contributors, who are about to become the second conference on D3boards.com (basketball) with 2,000 pages of rants, raves and interesting conversations.  8-)            The MIAA is the only other conference with more.

Everyone has a long way to go to catch MIAC football which is closing in on 4,000 pages.

True, but over half their pages are off-season discussions of beer, ice fishing, Australian Rules Football, what D-list celebrities will attend Stiftungsfest, etc.  It is powered by SJU fans saying 'Tommies Suck', and St. Thomas fans replying in kind.  MIAA bball is fueled nearly entirely by the Hope/Calvin rivalry (at least 80% of posts are by fans of one or the other, usually taking pot-shots at the rival).  (Sorry sac, but that is only a slight exaggeration! ;))

Only on this board (which to me, at least, will forever be 'CCIW Chat' 8-)) can you find relatively even participation by almost all conference schools (we just gotta come up with consistent Millikin participation), with year-round references to everything from basketball (gasp!!) to such pop cultural icons as Spinoza and Bad News Bears! ;D

I'm pretty sure it came from the CCIW football board, but to this day, I'm still trying to figure out what a "triple monkey stomp" is.
Hail, Hail, the gang's all here, all out for Wesleyan!

I'd like to think that Gregg Ashabi would agree with that, provided that wherever he is right now he's sober enough to log on to the Internet.

Quote from: sac on May 27, 2012, 06:36:48 PM......and to think before reading Greg's description the two most interesting things on this list for me were a kid from Norway attending North Park,

Your fun fact for the day: Lots of Norwegians have attended North Park over the past twenty years. In fact, for a while there in the late '90s and early '00s, there were a lot more Norwegians than Swedes at NPU, due to the quirks of the school's marketing. There are still a number of Norwegians that attend North Park, including Sigurd "Siggy" Pryser and Markus Fodstad, who are prominent members of the NPU men's soccer team; Liz Berntsen, who runs on the women's cross-country and women's track & field teams; and Caroline Mjoenes, a goalkeeper on the women's soccer team.

If and when Per Magnus Muren actually shows up on campus and dons a basketball uniform, it will put NPU in what I'm pretty sure is a unique position among four-year schools in the U.S. in that it will have had Norwegians playing on its teams in seven different sports (including American football!) within the past three years. Take that, St. Olaf and Luther!

Quote from: sac on May 27, 2012, 06:36:48 PMand the fact San Ramon, California residents couldn't think of a better name for their high school than 'California'.

Yeah, that one caught my eye, too. The school's sports nickname is the Grizzlies, probably a reference to the bear on the California state flag.

I can almost envision a Michigan High School being located on the eastern shores of the lake. But an Illinois High School? Where would it be located, and what would its nickname be? Probably something boring, like the Little Illini or something like that.
somewhere along the historic route 66 maybe?

As far as I know, 'monkey stomp' originated on the MIAC football thread.  A monkey stomp is winning by 3 TDs, so a double monkey stomp is winning by 6 TDs and a triple would be 9 TDs.

And a stompout is that combination with a shutout. I think the origination of the term is fluid between the LL and MIAC board.

Maybe it's just me, but I love the fact that these monkey-stomp things are actually quantified. Perhaps parallel usages should be worked up for basketball.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the quantified monkey stomps also assume successful PATs (thus winning margins of 21+, 42+, and 63+).  I suppose a direct transfer could be applied to bball (though God forbid anyone has a stompout!).

With the changes going on at NPU ... anyone know whether Mark Holmes will be around next year? Maybe GS has heard something. Hopefully he stays around for his senior year.

Well, we do seem to scare off most of the young guys who post here, don't we? ;) Almost all of our regulars here seem to be on the ear-hair side of forty ... even Bob, whom we've thought of for years as the baby of the group.

you guys can't be that old and don't you think that unless you're an alum, people come on when their kids play and drift away after they graduate?

It doesn't necessarily work that way. Parents do make up a constituency of some size on d3boards.com, but they're not even close to being a majority. And there's a third constituency that is actually fairly substantial in certain rooms, and that's townies (people who are fans of a certain school's teams because they live near the school). Nevertheless, alumni of various ages seem to be (by far) the largest constituency on d3boards.com.

Don't underestimate the number of twentysomething and early-thirtysomething alumni who post. In following all the various rooms on d3boards.com I've learned over the years that, although the student population itself doesn't seem to post much, there's a tremendous amount of younger alumni who post. Nevertheless, the rooms that have the heaviest traffic also tend to be the rooms that have the biggest ongoing sense of community, and those rooms are often dominated by older alumni and townies who are in it for the long haul, not just for the four years of a child's college sports career.

I'm interested in seeing Pat's impressions of who uses d3boards.com. I don't think that this subject has ever come up before, or at least I don't remember it.

I figured alums have to be the largest group, but never thought about townies. That would make sense in smaller college towns. I am on here as a parent, and follow my son's school, even though I am an alum of a d3 school. I will probably follow d3 even after he graduates, but it won't be as much fun as it is now.
