I spoke with a parent last week who advised that Augie's Coach G made a home visit to my community for recruiting purposes.  The adult told me that Coach G wore a "huge ring" from a basketball accomplishment.  What season/team would Coach G have led (or been under) that earned such an award?

mark---

What community and player merited such attention at this early date?

Assuming the ring is legit, perhaps it is the result of some accomplishment during his time in D1. If its a D3 trinket, the CCIW conference champs receive rings, so it could be a conference championship ring from one of the years Augie won since he has been the coach. They are nice rings, but I don't know if they can be classified as "huge."

And, speaking of the coach who seems to solicit the most reaction from rival fans in the conference, there is a most unusual picture of him on the Augie web site.  :-X

Undoubtedly that picture was taken while another team's player was shooting a free throw.  ;)
I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

Very likely, Dennis.
And, obviously, either the game has only been underway a minute or two, or no calls have yet gone against Augie, as evidenced by the unusual feature of the picture as I referred to it above. Namely, the fact that "The Stomper" has yet to sail his sport coat into the crowd!   :o   ;D

I like my split pea soup with ham.  Speaking of pork, this male-dominated board needs to know of the impending bacon shortage.  I've purchased a small freezer to put in the garage in order to stock up on my son's favorite bacon, a pepper-laced delicacy found only at Whole Foods, which makes me salivate also.

I find it truly odd that Carthage does not promote Bosko's accomplishments at Carthage in the bio with Wiertel/Garnes/McDaniel and also during his son's days.  Didn't he win a conference title while at Carthage?  Why talk about NPC baseball?  (Being an NPC grade during the time, several of those teams of his advanced deeply into the playoffs only to be defeated by Ohio powerhouse, Marietta.)

Here is the current 2012-13 Carthage basketball roster:

http://athletics.carthage.edu/roster.aspx?path=mbball

The transfer from UW-Parkside, Jaskulske, is listed as well.

Antwon (sp?) Hill no longer on roster.  I liked him.

Personally, I see 4 players in mix at the 3 for Carthage (Herth, Sykes Jr., Lee and Senior).  All decent players, would love to see one of them grow into a fine CCIW player.

AndOne

I think you'll see a Carthage starting lineup of Jaskulske (he didn't transfer from D2 Parkside to sit), Thompson, Johnson, Logan, and Kelly.

Between Herth, Sykes, Senior, and Lee, Lee is the only one listed as a forward, and he played a total of only 42 minutes all year last season.

Herth saw 364 minutes of action last year as opposed to Sykes' 254, and Senior's 92. I sense Senior has fallen somewhat out of favor with Bosko since his arrival on the frozen tundra beside the lake.

The 275 pound Tyler "Michelin Man" Pierce (thats a nice freshman picture of him at 230 thats being used on the current web site roster) will be the backup center. Even with his current poundage, he still moves well, and has a nice soft touch on his shot. He is pretty unstoppable when he backs a lighter defender down in the low post. He was an all conference player as a freshman, but not since. If he had managed to maintain his freshman weight, I'd bet big bucks that his level of play during his 1st year would have not only continued, but improved. However, as his girth expanded, his level of play, and his corresponding playing time have decreased. Opponents can be thankful that those Wisconsin brats are so tasty.
I'm confident Herth will see plenty of playing time, and will likely be the 3rd guard. He played well last year, and looked good  in summer league competition. As mentioned above, of the players bopol referred to, he saw the most action by far.
A good backup forward will be one of Bosko's most pressing issues this season. Bauch is listed as a center, but I think he would actually be just as well suited to the 4. Sykes is listed as a guard, but with his height and overall skill set, appears to be able to competently man the 3. Based on last season's stats, he appears a better option than Senior or Lee.

Oops...missed that one sentence.  So my question should be, why discuss baseball to a greater degree than Carthage basketball?

Generally agree.  Herth is probably at the forefront right now.  He's pretty good, but drives me nuts on offense because he takes a lot of shots that I don't like.  I'm glad he played well in the summer.  Sykes hustles pretty good too, so I like that.  I don't have strong opinions on Senior, except to say he seems like he is capable of more than he shows on the floor.  It's almost like he can't quite make the transition from very good high school player to solid D3 player because he can't figure out what works and doesn't work at the higher level.  Kiston Lee played well in one game I saw, but I didn't see enough of him.

I think Pierce will come off the bench and slam bodies with the tougher teams giving a good offense when needed.  Bauch is also a fighter.  I really have no idea on what to expect from Jaskulske, but it isn't clear to me that the transferring means he'll play.  There are a lot of reasons he could have left Parkside that have nothing to do with having a chance for more playing time at Carthage.  That said, I'd love to see a tough inside player to match up with North Central.

I still think Carthage has a really good chance of going 28-0 this year because it's still September.

Again, Mark, I don't see Bosko going with a lineup that includes three bigs. I think it'll be Herth or Sykes playing the 3 as a third guard.

I still think Carthage has a really good chance of going 28-0 this year because it's still September.

A source within the Parkside program has advised me that the primary reason Jaskulske transferred is because over the last 5 or so games last season, he was beaten out for a starting position. Perhaps he is one of those kids who was fortunate enough to receive a D2 scholarship, but really wasn't a D2 level player or didn't develop as expected. We've all seen plenty of kids go D1 or D2 who really weren't solid upper division players. However, you can be sure Bosko wouldn't have accepted him if he didn't feel Jaskulske could help. Also, what kid with only a year left to play is going to go somewhere he likely won't at least play significant minutes if not start?

Like I said, I feel Senior has fallen out of favor with Bosko. Perhaps the reasons you detailed are part of the reason why. I've always though Bauch could be a pretty good player. However, I believe he played somewhat less last year than 2 years ago, and Jaskulske's arrival likely means even less PT for him this year. Just have to wait and see.

Greg Sager feels Carthage will employ a lot of 3 guard offense, and I'm sure we'll see this set a good deal of the time. However, the offensive advantages of such a lineup are counterbalanced by a weaker defensive presence on the other end of the floor. Again, a wait and see.
