North Central over Central (Iowa) tonight, 88-83.  I have no details.

IWU70

70----

You really need to check the source of that information. North Central didn't play anyone tonight, and they don't play Central IA anytime this year.  ???

That was a women's game. AndOne -- couldn't be bothered to consider that possibility?

To be perfectly candid Mr. Coleman, in light of the fact the information was posted in the MEN'S room, I simply reacted to what I immediately knew to be erroneous information. My post was not malicious nor did I smite the original poster as 70 and I actually are often in agreement on various questions/issues. I simply pointed out the impossibility of the NCC MEN having played Central tonight.

I believe the real question here is why you were so "bothered" by what is 100% factual information, that you felt it necessary to respond in a spiteful manner.

I personally have a dislike for when people make an automatic assumption that there is no such thing as women's basketball. You may not have a ranked women's basketball team at your favorite institution, but you do have women's basketball. (And they have a Walnut and Bronze, by the way.)

Women's basketball deserves respect, not to be brushed off like it doesn't exist. Your dismissiveness of that possibility rubs me the wrong way. It may not be top of your mind but it should at least somewhere *enter* your mind.

Hope that answer helps you.

Far be it for him to assume we're talking men's basketball in a forum where the header is "Men's Basketball -> Midwest Region" and the original post made no mention of it being a women's game (which I would expect in a forum titled "Men's Basketball")

BTW, thanks for fixing the score on the Medger Evans/Lehman women's game.  I was shocked when D3Hoops had Medger Evans winning last night.  How do you guys get the scoring information anyway?  Does it come from the school's AD depts?

Yes, in this case the winning school actually posted it backwards. It does happen occasionally. Because, as Gordon mentioned, Medgar Evers is on a bit of a watch list for us, I saw that and knew immediately it was wrong.

It actually happens more often that the winning school posts the score backwards than the losing school, so I'm pretty sure it's not intentional. :)

I don't think we entered the MEC/Lehman women's score last night, though we're watching the box scores because of how extreme the results have been for the Cougars.

It looks likely we'll get a Yeshiva/MEC matchup this weekend.  That could be tremendously interesting...

Does anyone know if the Chicago - Wheaton game will be shown on-line?

Fixed it for you, Bob. ;)

Alas, those of you who were planning to tune in tonight to get more than your fill of Rob and I watch and hear Anderson @ NPU are going to be disappointed. We're having some administrative issues at the moment that we hope to have ironed out soon so that we can bring NPU basketball back into cyberspace.

Wheaton defeated U of Chicago, 64-52.

I watched a lot of this game and I think Wheaton is a good team.  Tyler Peters is an athletic freak at the PG spot...Teuscher and Kvam can shoot the heck out of it...Haynes is active and solid in the post...and there is promise at the those other spots with the Smith guys, etc.

This is about the time of year you factor out what you thought about a team in the preseason and you judge them for who they really are, and I think Wheaton is a good team.  They may be inexperienced but this team should be right in the middle of the race this year.

North Central seems to be a clear #1 in the league right now and a legitimate national power.  IWU is still trying to figure things out but a very talented team.  The young Augustana Vikings are good, as is Wheaton, and Carthage seems to have the pieces to get it together.

With those 5 teams I think the CCIW is in position to be strong this year.

Double overtime final from the crackerbox:

Anderson 91
North Park 89

Aaron Weaver: 38 pts, 5 rebs, 3 stls
Mark Holmes: 17 pts, 12 rebs
Chris Benjamin: 13 pts, 6 rebs
Maxwell Morgan: 6 rebs
Brett Peterson: 6 rebs

It's going to be a long, long season for NPU. Yes, the Vikings were scrappy enough to fight back from a double-digit deficit in the last five minutes of regulation (with Aaron Weaver scoring an amazing 16 points in that stretch), and the game was nip-and-tuck from there on in, but the fact of the matter is that Anderson simply isn't very good. A decent CCIW team -- or a North Park team with Mike Gabriel -- would've mopped the floor with the Ravens.

The Vikings threw the game away, not once, not twice, but all three times that the game clock was winding down. Up by two with 2.5 seconds left in regulation, they somehow let a Raven shake loose on the weak side off of an inbounds play for an open jumper that he canned to send the game into an extra stanza. How do you lose a guy off of an inbounds play with only 2.5 seconds left? He wasn't even screened open. He just lost his man. The second time that the Vikings coughed up a golden opportunity to win was at the end of the first overtime. With the score tied, the Vikes got the ball off of a traveling call with 20 seconds left. But they lost track of the clock on the ensuing possession, didn't get the ball into the hands of someone who was capable of scoring until Weaver got it at the elbow with two seconds left, and his prayer shot was not answered.

The third blown endgame came at Weaver's expense. To be sure, though, NPU never would've even been close if it hadn't have been for his heroics. He had a truly remarkable game. He only scored four points in the first half, and missed a dunk that earned him a quick seat next to Tom Slyder on the bench. But in the second half he basically took over the game, especially at the end of regulation and into the two overtimes. Unfortunately, with the scored tied in the second OT and the Vikings playing for the last shot with the shot clock turned off, he tripped and lost the ball with five seconds left, leading to a steal and a breakaway layup by the Ravens that just beat the buzzer to win the game. Can't blame that on Weaver, though, who put in a superhuman effort just to get NPU to that point.

Here's the thing, though: In Weaver's first four games as a Viking he's scored 27, 4, 9, and 38. If he's going to be "the man" he's got to be more consistent than that. The other thing is that he got almost all of his points by beating the Ravens defense off the dribble and either getting to the rim or getting to the free-throw line. That works against a team like Anderson, but the only CCIW team that he'll likely be able to consistently penetrate against like that will be Millikin. The other six CCIW teams will take that away from Weaver and force NPU to look for something else. And there's the rub: NPU simply doesn't have enough guys on the team who can put the ball in the basket. And the scorers that the Vikes do have are being forced to play out of their natural positions out of necessity: Mark Holmes is a small forward playing center, Aaron Weaver is a small forward playing power forward (although NPU's mostly playing four-out right now), and Zach Cassita is a shooting guard who is learning on the job how to play point guard.

There were some solid performances tonight besides Weaver's for NPU. Mark Holmes had a very quiet but very solid double-double. Chris Benjamin had a strong varsity debut with 13 and 6. And Brett Peterson had probably the best game I've ever seen him play; his two free throws with three seconds left in regulation should've given NPU the victory.

NPU fought very hard in this one, and the Vikes can't be blamed for their effort. But they were fighting hard against a team that an average CCIW team would've beaten by 15 or 20. A discouraging loss, and a portent of bad things to come, methinks.

Owen Handy did a nice job running his team tonight. I think he'll do quite well at Anderson, once he gets a handle on how to recruit for that school.

I thought that Tom Slyder did a great job of running his team tonight. He shows great patience with a squad that definitely requires patience, but he's certainly not above laying into a player if he shows a mental lapse (as he did a couple of times tonight with Weaver). The more I'm around Tom, the more I think he's the right guy for the job at NPU. But his maiden voyage aboard the Vikings longship is going to be a rough one.
