Can anyone here recommend a place to grab a burger and beers that's walking distance from Wheaton College? Planning on taking Metra out from Loop tomorrow so I'll be hoofin' it. Thanks!

If you take Metra to downtown Wheaton instead of College Ave, there is Muldoon's in downtown Wheaton on the corner of Hale and Front St.  Muldoon's is 2 blocks due east of the train station and has a variety of pub food and beers (both on tap and bottled).

It's not burgers and beer, but there is a decent Mexican restaurant called Front St. Cocina on Hale St. (used to be on Front St. but it moved and didn't change names).

From downtown Wheaton, the gym is about 3/4 of a mile to the east - you'll see the spires of the Billy Graham Center and Blanchard Hall.

The next time NPU is forced by a late cancellation to play the likes of Moody Bible Institute, the athletic department had better set out a pot of coffee for the scorer's table.

The great (yes, that's sarcasm, and quite a bit of it) Carthage men's coach, Kevin McCarthy once scheduled Moody Bible in the '89-90 season.  Entertaining game for us students at the time.  I remember Levon Brown ended the game on an alley-oop dunk from Mario Miller and Carthage won 114-55.  That was about the only game we got to cheer about that season.  As a follow up to that higher class of competition, McCarthy scheduled Northland Baptist the following season and won 114-57.  Talk about some tough competition to get ready for the CCIW.

Titans in St. Louis today/Saturday with two more very challenging, competitive games, first vs. Tufts (6 p.m. today), and with a win, then likely Wash U (or Wilmington).  After five games, it's pretty clear that the Titans are still very much a work in progress with many unanswered issues/questions re:  what they will really be like come conference play.  IMHO, so much more improvement, upside needed for this team to be really a contender for the CCIW crown, esp. with how strongly other contenders (NCC, WC, AC, and perhaps Carthage) are playing early, now.  Again, IMHO, key will be overall more consistent play, full minutes, valuing each possession from IWU bigs.  To date, Ziemnik and Musselman have played best, with Reed being the most consistent, reliable contributor.  Mayberger the big positive surprise.  Overall, the defensive intensity has been good, but the offensive performance inconsistent and spotty, at times down right self-destructive, esp. on the TOs and silly errors.  Hope this improves, changes this weekend, with lower TO numbers and a better overall offensive performance.  To me, big key down the road will be how well Overstreet and (now) Bryce Dolan play at PG, and how quickly we get more scoring, stretching the floor from the 2 -- from Dortch, Zimmer, and Sodemann (when he returns from injury in 2-3 weeks).  Injury report in today's Pgraph indicates he's (Sodemann) coming back sooner rather than later, that Molinari is cleared for some work, but not in full practice mode yet, and that Heyen is out with an ankle injury indefinitely.  Would love to see Victor Davis have a breakout weekend and live up to his potentially All-CCIW level of play this weekend.   Tufts and Wash U will be good tests for the Titans this weekend.

Women play U Chicago 2 p.m. Saturday @The Shirk -- and the 2011-2012 national championship banner is being unveiled.  Hope all the seniors from last year are able to make it, pull the rope to bring the banner down . . .Lett, Burton, Hasselbring and Solari, hopefully all in the house.

Have a good weekend all . . . to be almost 60 and sunny in Btown tomorrow.  Last chance for fall yard work and putting up your Christmas lights in balmy temps.

Seems Moody Bible is the ultimate cupcake game.  Sad . . . does no one, neither team, any good.

IMHO.

I hope the latter happens.  The last few games played in St. Louis have been epic.

WUH, yes, some of the greatest games in IWU history have been the key rivalry games between IWU and Wash U, especially in tournament games in March.  Hope it happens on Saturday, too.  Looks like Wash U has another very good team this year . . . always extremely well-coached by Coach Edwards!  (His wife is an IWU grad and was one of my classmates at IWU . . . shall we say a few years ago).  You know, family feud games are always best !  :)

Should be some wonderful basketball all 'round at Wash U today and tomorrow.

Anyone able to share thoughts on last night's UW Oshkosh/Augustana contest? I was surprised to see how close the final score was.  Off night for Augie?

I was wondering the same thing.

I blame it on having to keep score for a 97-20 women's game this evening at the crackerbox. That's enough to numb anybody's noggin.

The next time NPU is forced by a late cancellation to play the likes of Moody Bible Institute, the athletic department had better set out a pot of coffee for the scorer's table.

Think how numb your noggin would be had NPU lost.  ;)

It's impossible for me to wrap my mind around that concept. I don't think that a Moody team has ever come within hailing distance of a CCIW opponent in any sport -- and the Archers have actually played quite a few CCIW opponents in m/w soccer, m/w basketball, and volleyball over the years. Besides, NPU's women's team is decent this year.

Well, playing the Archers is better than simply leaving a hole in the schedule and playing one fewer game than is permitted by the NCAA, which was the reason why Amanda Reese picked up the phone to call the Moody coach and schedule the game. It gave her players another game to work on their offensive sets and practice their defense, it further integrated NPU's four new players into the team, and it gave the reserves lots of minutes.

Thanks for sharing the personal story.

IWU over Tufts at the half, 29-25, in what can only be described as something pretty ragged.

For IWU -- two times stepped on the baseline, several throw aways, two moving picks called, several turnovers and bad passes, two travels, tip out of bounds on rebounds and Davis with no points.  Boy, this is frustrating.  Must be at least 10-12 TOs officially. . . not sure.

Fortunately, Tufts isn't playing much better or more crisply.  This is ugly.

But, as Q has said, this is a Titan team that's going to win ugly.  OK, I get it.

Go Titans, win ugly.

Titans trailed late, but prevail 71-62.  Final margin greatly padded by 7 Brady Zimmer FTs in the final minute.  4 Titans with 10-15 points; but worrisome note: Victor Davis again failed to score a single point.

According to live stats, Victor Davis (0-6 FG, 0 pts) sat out the last seven or so minutes of the Tufts vs. IWU game, a situation in which the Titans were down by eight points at the time he went out. Was IWU70 sitting behind the Wesleyan bench whispering into Ron Rose's ear? ;)

Wheaton's live stats conked out at the end, but sac's reporting over on the MIAA board that Hope beat Carthage, 82-70. It wasn't that close; Hope was up by 16 to 20 points for most of the second half, but Carthage tightened it a bit in the last couple of minutes when the Hope starters were no longer in the game. Reese Herth led the Red Men with 25, while Donte Logan contributed 18 (I think) before fouling out and Luke Johnson had 11. Johnson, all 6'9, 230 of him, had as many trey attempts (five) as he had rebounds. And Tyler Pierce's only points in about 16 or 17 minutes of game time came on a trey.
