Greg,

Jaskulske used up a redshirt year at his former school, UW-Parkside, due to an injury.  Believe that was for a knee injury too.  I realize you can opt for a sixth year in some cases but, seems like based on this young man's tough luck with injuries, that might be a long shot.

This was in yesterday's Carthage press release following the loss to Coe:

QuoteStarting center Luke Johnson (So., Naperville, Ill./West Chicago-Wheaton Academy) didn't accompany the team due to back trouble, and backup Steve Jaskulske (Sr., Racine, Wis./Case) is out for the year after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament in last Friday's game versus Hope College at the CCIW/MIAA Classic in Wheaton, Ill.

Jaskulske is eligible for a medical redshirt if he chooses to go that route.

In response to Q's earlier inquiry about the use, or lack thereof, of WETN on mobile devices, WETN's streaming provider does not support mobile devices but USee is right on the best and in most cases only way to view WETN on mobile devices. I know WETN is working on providing a mobile device platform but there is no timetable for that.

Wheaton's frontcourt was/is the weak link for the Thunder but I think over the past week that weak link isn't as weak as expected.  I was more impressed with the way Wheaton's front line responded against Hope a week ago than last night.  The way Wheaton handled the physical bigs of Hope including limiting the 6-10 VanArendonk was impressive. Last night Wheaton responded to the experience of precision of a very talented WashU squad.

Wheaton's two victories against Hope and WashU have shown that Wheaton is a very mature team for playing so many young guys.  It also shows they can defend a bigger team. Berg's athleticism has been on display this past week and his athleticism along with the versatility of Peter Smith will really stretch teams defensively.  That said, North Central and IWU both have versatile guys who can defend with them.  That said, after last night's huge win, Wheaton can very realistically finish the first half of their schedule 11-0 and set themselves up with a solid NCAA resume regardless of their CCIW performance.

And to the comment earlier, Nate Haynes is only a junior. Wheaton starts two juniors (Haynes, Peters) two sophomores (Kvam, Peter Smith and Brayden Teuscher when healthy) and a freshman (Berg).  Nate Serenius is the only senior in Wheaton's rotation and he has seen very limited minutes due to an injury early in camp.

I do think that North Central and IWU are much more physical than Wash U in the frontcourt.  Wash U is very big at the 3/4/5 spots, and Burnett and Klimek are certainly strong, but I still think Wash U is more "tall" and "skilled" than they are "physical", if that makes sense.  Playing without Victor Davis, IWU's most physical player, IWU out-rebounded Wash U by 5 and was pretty clearly the stronger, more physical team.  Take away the IWU game, and Wash U is out-rebounding opponents a ridiculous 348-200 in those 8 other games -- that's 18.5 per game.  Last night the Bears out-rebounded Wheaton by 15. (Wash U killed IWU from the perimeter that night and IWU was terrible offensively.)  So just to give you an idea how physical IWU is, the Titans actually won the battle of the boards vs Wash U...again, without Davis.

I think Wheaton's frontcourt players could have their hands full on both ends of the floor against NCC and IWU.  I think it's fair to say the Thunder won't see anything quite like it in the non-conference -- I'm guessing Hope and Calvin were tall but not terribly physical?  And while I haven't seen a lot of Augustana yet, I'm guessing the Vikings are awfully physical down low too.  So if there is any question I have with Wheaton at this point, it's just that there are some big, physical frontcourts in the CCIW this year and I'm not 100% sure how the Thunder will stack up.

Gonna be a great 2013 CCIW race...as always.

Kind of odd, but neat, publicity for NCC this morning from former Chicago Bull (and current Bulls color man) Stacey King via Twitter this morning:

Stacey King - @Sky21King - Props 2 my boyz over at North Central College! I see ya holding it down at 6-0 this year! I'm coming to check ya out this year real soon!

Not sure what the connection to the program is. Maybe a few players work at Bulls/Sox Academy in the offseason and have met Mr. King?

AO, any light to shed on this?

I know a couple of starters worked as scorekeepers at the Bulls Sox academy this past spring and summer. I'm coaching a 12u travel team and saw them there a few times. Probably where it comes from

I unfortunately have been "off line" and out of it this week due to the unexpected sudden and crushing loss of my 22 year old nephew last Sunday, and the corresponding family events over this past week.
I will attempt to explore this possibility upon my return next week.

I do know that both Aaron and Vince worked at Bulls/Sox over the summer so therein may lie the impetus for a possible visit by Mr. King. And, should he decide to attend a contest at the venerable "hangar" I do know someone who can get him a good seat.   :)
AndOne,
My condolences for the loss of your nephew!
CARDINAL PRIDE STARTS WITH ME!

In spite of the fact that they're colloquially called "medical redshirts", medical hardship waivers aren't really redshirts per se. That is to say, they aren't affected by, and they don't affect, the ten-semester career calendar of a D3 student athlete. Jaskulske's 2012-13 year at Carthage won't be counted against him if he played in less than 30% of his team's games (which is the case) and he has medical certification attesting that he was physically incapacitated and couldn't participate in his sport.

In other words, it's really going to be up to him whether he comes back for another year or not. He'll have senior eligibility again in 2013-14 if he submits the proper paperwork to the NCAA.

NPU has finals this coming week, and I'm sure that some of the other CCIW schools do as well. Therefore, it looks like a fairly light week on the docket for the league:

Tuesday
Knox (0-5) @ Augustana (6-1)
Wisconsin-Platteville (7-2) @ North Central (7-0)

Wednesday
Lawrence (4-3) @ Elmhurst (1-5)
Millikin (3-5) @ Rose-Hulman (7-1)
Cornell (2-3) @ Wheaton (8-0)

Thursday
Augustana @ Fontbonne (1-6)

Friday
Wheaton @ Northwestern (5-1)

Saturday
Elmhurst @ Washington (MO) (8-1)
Chicago (4-3) @ Illinois Wesleyan (5-2)
Millikin @ Aurora (5-3)
North Central @ Benedictine (2-7)
Wheaton @ North Central (MN) (4-2)

Sunday
Augustana @ MacMurray (4-4)

North Central is on day 18 of their 41 day 1st-2nd trimester break. So........, without having to worry about classwork, they should have their minds on taking care of business. Of course, there is always food and.............. ;)

Just to clarify Greg's schedule - Wheaton plays at Northwestern (MN), not the much closer Big Ten variety! ;)

I left off the state denominator on purpose, Chuck. There is only one team that merits the name "Northwestern" on this site. If Wheaton was playing the school in Evanston, I would've said Northwestern (IL).

Thanks for the clarification, Chuck.  I mean, I assumed Wheaton was playing a Big Ten team.  Glad I know now.

As you probably know, the Titan women have played Big Ten Northwestern (though perhaps only exhibition; I don't recall).  I assumed it was the d3 Northwestern, but with Wheaton and d1 Northwestern being fairly close neighbors, I really wasn't sure.

The proprietor of this site apparently disagrees with you.  The scoreboard listing has Wheaton (IL) (for obvious d3 reasons) @ Northwestern (Minn). 8-)
