A quick question regarding Titan Q's team efficiency stat formula : does an offensive rebound create a new possession, or does it extend or "keep alive" the original possession? Thanks in advance for the clarification.

Rog, the formula I'm using is the pretty standard one of:

Possessions = FGA – Oreb +TO + (.475 x FTA)

So I think that means an offensive rebound "keeps alive" a possession rather than create a new one.

Quote from: Mr. Ypsi on January 18, 2013, 02:37:37 AMI would suspect that "Augie Doggies" does not precede the cartoon character of that name.  It may well have even been an invention right here on CCIW Chat.

No, "Doggies" goes back generations. I can't speak for any school other than NPU, but when I came to North Park I met alumni who were referring to Augustana athletes as "the Doggies," which means that it dates back to at least the '70s. I would guess it goes back much further than that. (Dennis Prikkel, paging Dennis Prikkel, please pick up the white courtesy phone.) After all, it's a rhyme, which makes it a natural and obvious nickname.

(The Hanna-Barbera animated dachsund of that name was first aired on TV in 1959, incidentally. So "Augie Doggie" has been in the cultural consciousness for a very, very long time.)

Mr. Ypsi

I was guessing the Hanna-Barbera cartoon was roughly that era (but didn't look it up - just recalling my misspent youth! 8-)).  I don't recall the term being used at IWU during my time, but may have simply missed it (or have a bad memory).  So I was wrong about it being a Chat coinage, but have not yet been proven wrong about it being a borrowing from H-B (thus post-dating the cartoon).

A brief history of Augie Doggie & Doggie Daddy can be found on Don Markstein's Toonopedia website, probably the most comprehensive collection of cartoon characters you'll ever find (including many you've never heard of!).  Caveat: visiting this site may take up many hours of your free time!

Huge game for the Thunder tonight up in Kenosha. Wheaton had a big win in Rock Island Wednesday. In looking at that win the Thunder shot an inexplicable 76% from the field (and 80% from the arc) in the second half. They led Augie by 5 at the 12:35 mark and Kvam hit 2 3's and a 2 (with help from Haynes and Peter's offensive rebounds) to stretch the lead to 12 and it was never closer). When your opponent shoots like that in your gym you aren't going to win many of those games.

So the question is, which Wheaton team shows up? More importantly, which Carthage team shows up? The one that beat #1 team in the country by 11 or the one that lost by 12 to Augie in kenosha? Either way it's a huge road game for the Thunder. Win and they are +1 in the road rage contest (and 4-2 heading to Elmhurst in the conference race), lose and they are 3-3 in conference. The difference, from a psyche perspective, seems big. With road games looming @IWU, and home contests vs Augie and NCC, gaining confidence in these types of games is critical.

Wheaton cannot expect to shoot 70% from the field on the road so they are going to have to find a way to win with their young squad in a tough environment against a team whose performance has been nothing but unpredictable.

"Anybody who shoots it like we did tonight is going to win," said Wheaton coach Mike Schauer. "Shooting the ball as well as we did hides a myriad of mistakes and makes everything look a whole lot better. Had we shot our normal percentage from the 3-point line, it's a much, much more competitive game."

A BIG ? about how well Carthage might do today has to do with whether or not Tyler Pierce plays. He missed the last game for unknown (to me at least) reasons.

I have no idea why Tyler Pierce missed the last game, but I don't think the Red Men can compete with Wheaton if he doesn't play.  Pierce was having a nice CCIW season before missing that game.

If Pierce does play, the one reason to think Carthage can give Wheaton some trouble is the fact that the Red Men have some very quick, athletic perimeter players who can defend - Donte Logan, Reese Herth, Kevin Sykes Jr, and Kiston Lee.  Maybe that group can give Teuscher and Kvam some trouble in getting good 3-point looks off.  Not to mention the fact that that can be a tough place to shoot anyway - I've seen good shooting IWU teams have really rough shooting nights up there.

If Carthage can slow down Wheaton's perimeter attack, maybe this one stays close.

Another tough game for Red Men

KENOSHA — The Carthage men's basketball team will play its fourth nationally ranked opponent in its last five games when it hosts No. 20 Wheaton in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin matchup 7 p.m. Saturday at Tarble Arena.

The Red Men (7-9, 2-3 CCIW) have lost four in a row to Wheaton, which received an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament last year and lost to eventual champion UW-Whitewater in the Sweet 16.

Wheaton (13-3, 3-2) is coming off a resounding 86-67 victory at No. 23 Augustana on Wednesday. The Thunder went 11-of-15 from 3-point range in the game.

"That one is an eye-opener," Carthage coach Bosko Djurickovic said. "Any time you go to Augustana and win by 20 you know you're playing well."

Junior guard Tyler Peters is averaging 19 points, 5 assists and 4.6 rebounds for Wheaton. Brayden Teuscher (13.7 points per game), Michael Kvam (11.3) and Nathan Haynes (10.0) are the team's other top scorers.

"He really is an exceptional player," Djurickovic said about the 6-foot-4 Peters. "He's a strong guard. While he's not necessarily a great 3-point shooter (9-of-22), he's an exceptional all-around guard because he gets to wherever he wants on the dribble and he's a very strong defender because of his strength."

Carthage senior Tyler Pierce sat out Wednesday's 65-61 victory at Elmhurst for breaking a school rule, according to Djurickovic. Pierce, averaging a team-best 15.3 points in CCIW play, injured his ankle in practice on Thursday, however, and is questionable. In addition, backup sophomore forward Kiston Lee fractured a finger and is out indefinitely.

"It's been one of those years," Djurickovic said.
