Ditto

I took my 12U travel team to the game so they could see some real good, physical basketball and the game didnt disappoint at all.

Gamble was the difference maker in key situations, I thought.

That game could have really gone either way, and it just went the way I hoped it would not.

Alas, both teams worked really hard, great game to watch!

Congrats to NCC and IWU, good game and seasons.

That was my first DIII game in about 2 years and holy cow are the refs even more garbage than I remember.

Late foul calls, phantom foul calls, missed out of bounds tips, 50+ fouls called or whatever it was, constant meetings, etc.  I thought I was at an NFL game it took so long.

Carthage 80
North Park 51

Zach Cassita: 20 pts, 6 rebs
Mark Holmes: 11 pts, 7 rebs

Mitch Thompson: 17 pts, 9 rebs
Marlon Senior: 15 pts, 7 rebs
Kevin Sykes: 10 pts
Donte Logan: 6 asts

This one went about the way that I expected it would. I didn't think that NPU mentally packed it in or didn't play hard, but the Vikings simply don't have the horses to play with anybody in this league. In retrospect, I'm surprised that they even won one game. They're one of the least-talented CCIW teams I've ever seen, which is what three head coaches in three years and three recruiting coordinators in five years will get you.

It was clear that Mitch Thompson and Tyler Pierce wanted to make a statement in their last-ever collegiate contest, as both performed very well tonight. But it was the perimeter guys, Senior and Logan and Sykes, who really shined for Carthage. Put them together with Reese Herth and (maybe) Malcom Kelly, and Bosko will really have something next season. Unfortunately for him, he's gotta find at least three, probably four, bigs who can step in and play right away in this league -- and that's a very tall order (no pun intended), and it's why I don't think that Carthage will be picked for the first division in the preseason poll next autumn, barring some unforeseen recruiting windfall.

Zach Cassita went down swinging, as his 20 points indicate, but his fellow senior Mark Holmes had a final night in uniform that I'm sure he'd rather forget. Nevertheless, big thanks to Zach and to Mark, as well as their fellow seniors Brett Peterson, Paul Brown, and Pat McCarthy, for sticking it out and fighting the good fight. It ain't easy to be a part of a soul-crushing season like this. My heart goes out to Brett Peterson in particular, who, counting his freshman year at Westfield State, had a career that included four different head coaches in four seasons. I also feel for Mark Holmes, an exceptional basketball player who was forced to spend his two years at NPU playing out of position. I'll always wonder what he could've been capable of doing if he had been able to play his natural position of small forward for NPU, and what might've happened if he'd had a little more talent around him.

It's a relief to get this season over with. Now comes the interesting part: What can Tom Slyder, Cordell Henry, Ryan Bigelow, and Kevin Holmes come up with in terms of a crop of newbies? The cupboard is practically bare; North Park needs help everywhere. In an odd sort of way, this is actually kind of an exciting time for NPU. We'll really get to see what this coaching staff is made of, because the focus is now upon the most important part of a coach's job, which isn't running a game or conducting practice or drawing up X's and O's in pregame meetings. The most important part of a coach's job is recruiting, and that's where the rubber hits the road (literally and figuratively) for Slyder & Co. for the rest of the 2012-13 school year and beyond.

This was terrible.

Shortly after (not sure if it was this possession or a following possession) they also missed a blatant out of bounds under the basket as well.

Entertaining game, but you can keep the refs. (luckily they were bad both ways, so neither team really can complain too much about it)
You win! You always do!

Not sure if this article was previously posted on the board, but it seemed like Mark Holmes saw the big picture and doesn't have regrets transferring to NPU.

Before I get on my soap box I want to say congrats to both IWU and NCC. That really was a good game, as I knew it would be.

Now....As someone already said, there were bad/missed/late calls on both sides.  I agree that neither team can complain. The one call that just left me scratching my head was the tech on Victor Davis.  I know why they gave it to him but why was it considered his fifth foul? Prior to Victor's tech, #44 (I believe it was) was T’d up.  The ref initially said that was his fifth, but after talking with the other refs changed it to a team foul.  In the words of my middle school students, “That was bogus,” or am I missing something?

I believe the rule in college is, if you get a technical, it also counts as a personal foul. So if you have 4 and get a tech, you're done.

What a FANtastic game last night at NCC. I hope the NCAA sets the tournament up so it's possible that IWU and NCC could meet in Atlanta. I thought the refs had an incredibly hard game to officiate with so much contact, especially underneath. Gamble was the difference in OT and Kmiec kept NCC from losing in regulation. The 25'+ 3 by Zimmer to tie the game at 79-79 with 3:58 in OT was the most amazing shot of the game. I thought IWU missed a great opportunity to win at the end of regulation but NCC's defense was very good in that last 26 seconds. IWU settled for a driving off-balance shot by Overstreet after a timeout with 2.2 seconds left.

Merner Fieldhouse is a horrible place to watch a game if you are a visiting fan. I go to any other CCIW fieldhouse on the road and I can sit wherever I want (except for the student or band sections). There are no reserved seats. But at NCC, all the decent floor seats are reserved for NCC alums. Next year, I'll buy a NCC sweatshirt and sit in those seats. I sat in the end zone and missed so much of the critical action at the other end of the court. I don't know who the incompetent architect was who drew up the plans for the worst basketball venue by far in the CCIW.

I think it is a cool vintage atmosphere, but I agree, they really miss an opportunity to be better hosts.

I like to sit in the upper balcony section, good view from there.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think there are distinctions between the types of technical fouls that are called.  The referees deemed that Victor Davis' technical was the kind that calls for a personal foul as well, and Charlie Rosenberg's was the kind that didn't.  Whether the refs administered that correctly is a whole other discussion.

I know that this won't ease your anxiety about the difference in the calls, but Rosenberg wasn't put back into the game after that technical anyway because the coaches were clearly upset with him.  And, he probably wasn't going to get back in the game unless it went into a couple of more overtimes and a few NCC players fouled out.
