Fantastic defensive game. Both teams played as though they would be lined up against the wall in front of a firing squad if they gave up a bucket.

Key to the game was a shrewd coaching move by Todd Raridon.   Wheaton came back from down 10 in the 2nd half to take a 3 point lead with about 4 minutes left.   NCC then switched to zone and Wheaton didn't get a another FG the rest of the game.  You'd think a team like Wheaton with their perimeter shooters would feast on a zone but all year they have looked really bad when opponents have gone zone.   They really don't seem to know how to move the ball quickly against a zone.

Mr. Ypsi

Anyone else have trouble with the video?  It was fine until about 5 minutes into the second half, after which it 'buffered' (and, last I checked, is STLL buffering)!  (And I'm on a computer which is five days old, so I don't think the problem was at this end! ;))

They're beyond awful.

I usually try to cut student broadcasters some slack, but ... well, you all know my feelings about announcers not doing their pronunciation homework. They're butchering a number of names.

Doesn't sound like they've done their homework on anything having to do with these two teams, in fact. They seemed genuinely surprised that Jack Burchett, the most notorious charity-stripe clank artist this league has seen in years, struggles at the FT line.

D-3 watcher needs to fly Bob into Bloomington to call these games over the Internet. Please!

You can also add the rules of the game to the list.......at one point they mentioned that NCC had chosen Charlie Rosenberg to shoot FTs when Tiknis left the game with an injury......And then mentioned that Charlie is one of the best FT shooters on the team.......at a 40% clip.......ouch.

Agree completely.  Wheaton was getting to the rim whenever they wanted until NCC switched to the zone that looked like a 3-2 at times but also a 2-1-2 at others.

This was a game of spurts in the 2nd half.  NCC ran out to the 10 point lead mid-way through the 2nd half, then Wheaton went on a run of their own to go up 3.  Then NCC took over with Tiknis and Raridon hitting some big 3s to go back up about 6......It was an odd last 10 minutes to the game.

Excellent point. Added to the fact that Wheaton really wasn't hitting from downtown the entire game, it looked like a genius move by Raridon.

And, not to keep piling on, but I never heard the broadcasters mention that NCC switched from man to zone. In my mind, at least, it's always a must-call by any broadcasting team to notify the viewers when a team switches from man to zone, or vice-versa. The fact that it came in crunch time in a tight tournament game made it even more important to point that out.

They were also two points behind on Peters for most of the second half. For much of the second half Jack Burnett was on the floor for North Central. Apparently the freshman Riley Teuscher started for the Thunder despite playing in only one game all year. At one point Brandon Williams was on the floor for a stretch for North Central despite never appearing in the game. Mike Kvam was never once pronounced correctly and neither was either Teuscher. That's one of the worst broadcasts I've had to sit through in a while. Most importantly, they never once pointed out the key move from man to zone by NCC after Gamble fouled out. I mentioned it in the in-game boards but Carthage at least patched in the WETN audio to their video feed for their broadcast to avoid that problem on the women's side.

Yes.  Mine did the same thing at that point.  It was buffering during the time Gamble picked up his 5th, so I didn't get to see the call......it came back on when the announcers were talking about the call being questionable.

At that point, I assumed it was probably a pretty good call........

Personally, I liked how impressed they were with Derek Reardon. ;)

I believe these two are the Zimnick-Zeemnick combo.

They can and will call an entire game each choosing a different pronunciation, and never will they discuss that someone is wrong.

It's called hedging your bets....one of them has to be right, right???

CCIW

We laughed so hard at the broadcast team.  It was great entertainment.....and incompetence.   ::)

A whole lotta butt-ugly shooting in this game, particularly from the Titans.

Ugly.  ???

Mr. Sager beat me to it, but that's the only word to describe that.

Titan Q

Well, that was probably the worst performance I've ever seen from IWU at the Shirk Center - certainly the worst by a good IWU team.

Not sure what I just watched - that didn't resemble the Titans team that played any of those 14 CCIW games.  It was almost bizarre.

Credit Augustana for making a really good offensive team look just awful with the ball.  Augie played a ton of zone and made the Titans knock down shots...which they just never did.

Gregory Sager

Wesleyan was 14-56 (25%) from the field, and 5-25 (20%) from downtown. Augie wasn't any great shakes, either; 37% (19-51) from the field and 31% (4-13) from downtown, but a poor 55% (11-20) from the free throw line. Augie should've salted the game away with a couple of minutes left, but the Rock Islanders left the door open by not hitting their free throws. However, they did show more spark late in terms of rebounding -- lots of offensive rebounds in crunch time by Augie -- and blocked shots, which kept the Titans from being able to take advantage of Augie's poor FT shooting.

This was not a pretty game to watch by any means. Yes, the defenses were pretty good -- the 3-2 zone by Augie did seem to cause IWU some problems -- but it was really more of a case of both teams missing good shots left and right.
