From March 2005...

IWU unable to host men's sectional tilts

Shirk Center booked with national indoor track meet

BLOOMINGTON -- Now that the Illinois Wesleyan basketball team has secured its spot in the NCAA Division III Tournament, speculation may begin on what path the Titans could encounter in postseason play.

One thing is for certain, however. That path will not include Shirk Center for possible sectional competition.

Shirk Center is the site for the Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships March 11 and 12, the same weekend four basketball sectionals will decide who advances to the basketball Final Four in Salem, Va.

With a 21-4 overall record heading into the NCAA Tournament and a more than adequate facility, IWU would be a strong candidate to host a sectional if the Titans advance that far.

"It's a situation that is out of my control," Wesleyan coach Scott Trost said. "Obviously, we would prefer to play at home in front of our great fans. But I'm sure we'll have great fan support if we go on the road. You've got to beat them wherever you have to play them."

IWU played host to the indoor meet in 2000 and was happy to oblige when asked to do it again, said athletic director Dennie Bridges. The basketball team did not qualify for the NCAA Tournament that season.

"We hosted it in 2000 successfully. With our facility, we're considered one of the prime spots to host it. I asked our track coach, Chris Schumacher, and Chris wanted to," Bridges said. "It was really a no brainer.

"The bottom line is our track athletes want the opportunity to participate in a home national meet, also. It's being a part of an athletic department that's more than one sport."

Bridges looked into having a basketball sectional at Redbird Arena or Horton Field House at Illinois State. But Redbird Arena will be holding the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Tournament that weekend.

"The NCAA doesn't look real kindly on those kind of bids," Bridges said. "The NCAA prefers it to be an on-campus (Division III) facility."

Per above, in 2004-05 IWU wanted to put in a bid using Illinois State facilities...but they were not available that weekend.

Do we know if NCC put in a bid using Benedictine's gym (or some other D3)?  I assume so?

Why does indoor track even exist?  Maybe we should have an outdoor basketball season in the spring and put up hoops on the track.  IMO actual sports should take precedent over organized exercise.

Big plays by Kvam, Teuscher and Haynes.    Peters saw quick double teams all night.

Now this has potential!  ;D

It would not be the first time a school can't host a basketball tournament if their facilities are being used for another event - that is part of the criteria as well when you submit: what are your restrictions. Granted, a single game is easier to host, but if the gym is being used for other purposes that will keep the teams from being able to practice, first and foremost, on the floor they will play on... it isn't going to happen. Now, I have been told from a reliable source that NCC may actually have organized with Benedictine to host the men's game understanding this situation - so that could mean NCC will host this weekend since they were a higher ranked team than UWW.

Now, to clear up what Mike DeWitt was talking about... that was specific to New Jersey and their situation where games can not be hosted in their state. I would be careful trying to make corolations to NCC's situation and the situation New Jersey schools found themselves in. The NJ scenario was outside of the control of the institutions and thus a punishment wouldn't be fair to the student-athletes. The situation NCC finds itself in happens often in Division III and remember if this was a normal pod and a school's women's program was hosting - one of them would be out of luck.

Finally, someone asked about DePauw hosting both weekends on the women's side - they are more than allowed to do so and we see it often. Hardly ever is the host of the first weekend not hosting the second across the board (unless they were all upset :)). The only time I have seen a deserving host not get the second weekend was Hope and IWU women's teams who were also hosting the Final Fours that season. Robin Hamilton indicated there is a conversation about the fairness of a team possibly hosting all six games - and twice I have seen where Hope and IWU did not host the second weekend and I think in both scenarios they lost and didn't get back home.

Right... so, about this idea of organized exercise...

(I'm sure that any errant javelins which land in Izzy's direction this week are merely coincidental...)  ::)

1. indoor track is an "actual sport". Leads right into outdoor track, another "actual sport". I"m going to guess you never tried it. 2. North Central is one of the most successful track and cross-country programs in the country. The have been planning for this meet for over a year now.

The On Demand for IWU/Transylvania -- http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/iwu.portal#

The key stretch for IWU is from 1:36:00 or so on the player to 1:48:30, when IWU goes from 51-51 (at 9:35) to up 66-58 (at 4:22).  Some very big offensive plays in that stretch by the Titans.  Dylan Overstreet was a key to that mini run, but Ziemnik, Zimmer, and Davis hit big shots as well.

Since they don't throw the javelin anywhere near the track, a kid who could heave one that far would be amazing:):):) Besides, they don't throw the javelin indoors-would kill someone :):)

I was told the same regarding the game being played at Benedictine.
You win! You always do!

Titan Q

If NCC plays at Benedictine, would they get to add 6-9 F Luke Johnson for that game?

IWU will play @ Wash U in round 2 - 7:00pm tip Saturday.

This will be a Benedictine according to a NCAA source tells me... but that is rock-solid.
