Not being able to see the Wheaton game, what did St. Norbert do to hold Peters down?  Did they have a great on the ball defender or lots of help-side / double teams?

Here is an article describing last nights NCC/Centre game according to Centre's HC Greg Mason:

http://www.centralkynews.com/amnews/sports/amn-centre-basketball-centre-men-fall-to-north-central-6650-in-ncaa-division-iii-first-round-20130302,0,5365598.story

Two quotes from the Centre coach, both of which show (1) great sportsmanship from Coach Mason, and (2) a healthy respect for the Cardinals' inside game:

"We knew they were big, we knew they were physical, but to see it on film and to see it in person are two different things," Centre coach Greg Mason said. "That's the best team we've played in five years. It's not even close."

-----

"Their post guys were juniors and seniors against our freshmen and sophomores, and you could really see a difference," Mason said. "They were a very physical basketball team — not dirty at all, they were as clean as could be — but just really physical.

"That's the standard. We've got to get to work in the weight room to make sure we're that team in 24 months."

When I cut and pasted the quotes from the article in the Central Kentucky News Journal, it tried to append a link back to the article into what I had cut.  So it would have looked like this:

Interesting tactic to drive traffic back to their site -- and not something I think I've seen before.

In relation to NCC playing at Benedictine due the National Indoor Track Championships at NCC, I would really like to know what the rules truly are that may, or may not, prevent NCC from hosting the basketball game on Saturday night.  I cannot find anywhere in the handbook where the NCCA 'prohibits' this.....it merely states that it 'prefers' no conflicts (and that is a little vague.....does it mean on campus or in the event arena?).

And, with the setup this year of one game per weekend, it is a very different landscape than prior years (for example 2005 with IWU).  It is much easier to accomodate two teams and one game (along with practices and shootarounds) than it is 4 teams and three games over two days.

I'm really curious if the NCCA told NCC that they can't do both, or if there wasn't much effort by NCC in coordinating their efforts to suit the NCAA???

The track meet's last event is scheduled for 4:20 on Saturday.  And, in looking at the event schedules on Friday and Saturday, it would seem that practices and shootarounds could be scheduled in conjunction with the pentathlon and heptathlon events.

It would be tight, but could it be done with a little effort and creative thinking?  What do others think?

There are also staffing concerns, locker room availability, parking, hotel rooms, etc. And while it may not be written any where... we have seen in many instances where other conflicts are an issue. There is also probably a very strong chance that the NCAA said to them when they got the bid to host track and field that they had to be focused on that on campus - though playing at Benedictine takes up some focus as well. I am pretty sure if NCC was asking Benedictine to help... they knew the NCAA had already told them doing both on campus wasn't going to fly.

So one thing to consider here is that North Central would not want to do anything to negatively impact the track meet that is scheduled next weekend.  This may be tantamount to treason on a basketball board, but hosting the national championships for indoor track > hosting a second round basketball game -- and that would be true even if you weren't a track/cross country powerhouse.

I can't see where North Central would create a scenario where they shoehorn the events related to a basketball game into what is surely already a well-scrutinized and NCAA- approved set of logistics for the track meet.  You just don't spring the 'hey, we also want to host a basketball game here this weekend' into the equation less than a week in advance of an event like that.

Partnering with Benedictine is the best solution given that the facility was already committed for Saturday.

Kiko, you are spot on... and so was he.  There did seem to be quite a gulf between the two teams once NCC upped the defensive intensity and tempo.  Congratulations to Centre for a great season.  I will key an eye on their youngsters over the next few years to see how they progress.

My early read is that we could see a bit of the same next Saturday -- especially if NCC gets out of the gate better than it did last night.  NCC will have the same height and length advantage in the backcourt, and will certainly disrupt the entry passes and outside shooting.  UWWs bigs will be a bit stronger on the blocks though.  I love the defensive strategy I saw the Cardinals employ in the second half last night. One final note that no one talked about was how well the Cardinals did on the charity stripe last night.  This one will be fun to watch.

Wow. that's nuts. both teams celebrating, thinking they had won. Officials need to be in the witness protection program after that one. But looks like they got it right. Thanks for sharing.

Q, great clip on the Mt. Vernon - New Rochelle game, just outside of NYC, Westchester County.  What a shot!!  He clearly got it off.

Great job by our Titans.  Hope we can keep it rolling, get everyone involved.  Thought the keys to our win were that stretch where Dylan made a few key shots/plays, some plays by Victor and Zman too, but Dylan really ramped it up in that small stretch in the second half.  Zimmer, of course, was just oustanding.  Thinking about the game overnight, I'm thinking this new, drawn-out schedule is almost perfect for someone with a dodgy back, allowing for a week of rest, one game at a time, 'til Salem, then two weeks off 'til the Championship game.  Could be key for Brady and our Titans.  We'll see.

Looking forward to another classic Wash U - IWU matchup in March.  We've seen a bunch, haven't we!?!?

All best to all the chatsters -- all the Titan Nation fans.  A great time of year to be a Titan!

or a snake!  ;D

Wasn't it Stout or Whitewater who lost a game in the WIAC tournament by throwing the ball up in the air in celebration and hitting the rafters or scoreboard.  Resulting in one last shot for the opposition that won the game.

Maybe John can recall that one.

One other part of the equation:

The NCAA has a requirement that the visiting school(s), as well as the home team, has the opportunity to practice on the game floor the day BEFORE the game -- and also have a shootaround/walk-through on the game floor the  day of the game.  (I think the practice the day before is for 90 minutes.)  Therefore, Merner would need to be available for practice on Friday, with no one else in the arena, and that sounds like an impossibility with the Indoor Track and Field championships.  I would have to guess that both teams will practice at Benedictine on Friday in addition to the Saturday walk-throughs and game.

Good point, rabblerouser. The floor has to be available for that as well.

That is why I referenced the track schedule and the pentathlon and heptathlon times because those events last 3-4 hours......It may not be possible.....I was just trying to think of ways to accomplish both.

On another note, can NCC practice at Benedictine during the week prior to Friday?
