Coach Edwards absolutely, positively, unequivocally guarantees a victory over the IWU Titans.  He later went on to call the Titans "a bunch of softies"...but mysteriously that part got cut out of the archive.

Meh.

Come on, Q...Coach Edwards did NOT say anything about "softies", LOL.  I conducted the press conference, and there was no such reference.

Conjuring up faux bulletin board material to stir the hearts of the Titan faithful is rather weak sauce, wouldn't you agree?

Wasn't it Stout or Whitewater who lost a game in the WIAC tournament by throwing the ball up in the air in celebration and hitting the rafters or scoreboard.  Resulting in one last shot for the opposition that won the game.

Maybe John can recall that one.

River Falls, back in the Melzer era. Were playing Oshkosh at home to clinch their first WIAC title in forever. Oshkosh missed a 3-pointer with a few seconds left. UWRF grabbed the ball and flung it into the air in celebration, but it struck the low ceiling of the Karges Center before time expired. Ball declared out-of-bounds, possession to Oshkosh with 1+ seconds left. Oshkosh hits a three and sends it to OT, wins in OT. River Falls also loses next game and doesn't win WIAC title. (They did win it the next year, though.)

Good point, rabblerouser. The floor has to be available for that as well.

That is why I referenced the track schedule and the pentathlon and heptathlon times because those events last 3-4 hours......It may not be possible.....I was just trying to think of ways to accomplish both.

On another note, can NCC practice at Benedictine during the week prior to Friday?

They can. There's no facility restrictions until the day before the game.

Once you reach midnight of the day before the event, the facility is then said to be "in control of the NCAA". Nobody is permitted to practice or shoot except for the team's designated 90 minute practice the day before the game and the 60 minute shootaround the day of the game.

Sometimes home team players don't know that and show up, thinking they can get some extra shooting in, just like they always do, but they can't.

On Demand > NCAA Press Conference > 25:15 mark

Unbelievable.  Put it on the bulletin board in the practice gym!

Really?  Put it on the bulletin board in the practice gym for sure.  He called you a bunch of softies.  Titans, what say ye to that?
Play the best to be the best.

Bob's description is certainly incendiary.  The actual comment -- not so much.

(Cleaned up for verbal bobbles but not for grammar):

Question:  Next week it is Illinois Wesleyan will be the challenge.  Obviously you've seen and played them quite a bit.  Not as many times as your conference rivals, but it's almost a conference rivalry because you're so familiar with the Titans.  What about this rematch?

Answer:  Well, you know, when you're playing in the tournament, you're going to play good teams.  We'll play it.  We're looking forward to it.  We have a great history,  and a great competition between the two schools over the years, and it seems that it ends up in the NCAA tournament a number of times, so this time we're going to come out on top.

Right Bill - and the key word is "facility" - I believe the NCAA has control of the entire facility not just the gym.  I had a chance a few years ago to meet with an NCAA advance team.  We had a good discussion about "in control".  For good reasons, the guidelines to the advance team and/or NCAA site rep are fairly rigid about what can and can not occur. Those guidelines are throughly discussed with the host site in advance also.  For North Central to host at the Hangar during the track meet, the track & field and basketball NCAA site teams both would have had to agree to exceptions.

Not to put to fine a point on it, but to add slightly more context, at the end, Coach Edwards suggests that the seniors will make it their goal to get past the second round and then turns to them and asks for confirmation.  The Coach definitely does not sound absolute or unequivocal.

The interview does not exactly make for good locker room material, but I am not sure either team needs it.

I really need to use emoticons more I guess, because on occasion there are just too many fairly serious responses to things I assume will be identified quickly as a joke.

I certainly did not expect anyone to read that post about Mark Edwards and think it was serious!

:)  :)  :)  :)

Mr. Ypsi

For once I was not among those taken in by Q. ;)  Few, if any, coaches would say such a thing publicly about an opponent, and certainly Coach Edwards would be unlikely to say such a thing about IWU even behind closed doors - too much history (and mutual respect) there!

Even the inclusion of emoticons is no guarantee that some readers will still not take a post as entirely serious.
There are some who seemingly can't take even 1 degree of criticism about their school, team, or coach.
I believe you have been guilty of this at times yourself, as have I, and almost everyone else.
I think the problem occurs with those who will take exception each and every time anything negative whatsoever is posted about their team----even if what is posted is true.  :)

I don't think that describes those who replied.

Daily Herald article on NCC's win over Centre Sat night.

http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20130302/sports/703029795/

4 primary reasons for the NCC victory:

1. The Cardinals stepping out of their 1st half funk to shoot 68.2% in the 2nd half.
2. NCC's 1-2 inside punch of Landon Gamble & Charlie Rosenberg who Centre really didn't have an answer for.
3. Jack Merrithey's steady play and his being the primary director of the revived offense during the 2nd half. For good measure, Jack threw in 8 points, and had a team leading 4 steals.
4. Vince Kmiec's suffocating defense, which was perhaps the primary reason for the victory. Centre guard Byron Ellis came in averaging about 10 ppg, and having made 54 three point shots which would have been good for the 2nd most for the year in the CCIW. Primarily through Vince's efforts, Mr. Ellis went 0 for 8, including 0 for 6 from distance.
Vince has gone from not being able to guard his mom during his freshman year, to being perhaps the top perimeter defender in the CCIW. For the season, he has 59 steals, tying the all-time NCC record.

Definitely my intent to trash IWU fans, TitansIWU.
Thats why I included myself among those that are guilty of the offense I described.  ;)   :)   ;D
