Wow.  Coach Rose guarantees a victory in the Hangar next weekend.  Put that up on the bulletin board!  ;D

I forgot to add...

During the IWU/Wash U game on December 2, I sat next to poster "hopefan" towards the end of the game.  IWU was really dominated by the Bears in that game.  As the final seconds ticked off, hopefan got up to leave, turned to me, and said, "Well...I guess this sets up another dramatic reversal in the NCAA tournament in March."

Reed's tough play, consistency, double-double 14-14, Dortch's tough D on Aboona, a big part of the Titan win @Wash U.  Davis playing well now, more like last year at this time.   Zman was absent, save for good rebounding, then came up big in the final 4 minutes.  And, Overstreet -- what can you say?  After all our debates and doubts on this Board about whether he was really a PG, well, there you go . . . he's been outstanding since early CCIW play and is, without doubt, the straw that stirs the IWU drink.  Subpar games from Sodemann and Zimmer tonight, but they will come back, have their day.  FT-shooting has to improve!

Big challenge now @NCC -- and another tough, close game, no doubt.  The rubber match for the championship of the "bracket of death."  No easy roads to Salem, or on to Atlanta, though it seems to me if IWU gets past NCC, their road to Atlanta is easier than most.

Congrats again to the Titans and Coach Rose.  On the video stream, looked like a nice Titan travelling crowd @Wash U.  Should be easier to get a huge turnout of Green for the Hangar.

Congrats to Wheaton on a fine season and a very strong effort against the 27-1, now 28-1 Tommies in MSP.

Thanks to all who offered compliments and constructive criticism tonight regarding our Internet broadcast.  It's good to get feedback on our performances.

Thanks to Q for the halftime interview and the kind words.  It was good to meet you in person!

And, I'd like to politely and respectfully offer a defense of my partner...in the sense that, if you survey the total broadcast, you will find that he is complimentary of the opposing team quite often. Granted, the footwork assessment of Kevin Reed was pretty strong, but Reed did have 6 turnovers in the game, and at least 2 of 3 of them involved the shuffling of both feet when catching a pass.  In the end, his 14-and-14 night more than made up for the turnovers, and forced us to eat some crow (I've had crow before...tastes like chicken, LOL).

I think we both had to make an early adjustment to what were called fouls throughout much of the regular season at home, but were not called in the last two games.  The officiating crews for those games let more contact go (for both teams), so I think we needed to make an early adjustment regarding our opinions of the calls and non-calls.  The officials were consistent in the last two games, so I didn't have a problem with them...fouls were 22-19 tonight.  Once we determined what the norm was going to be, I believe that we were fairer with our comments.

I did record the audio of tonight's game, so I will go back and give it a listen as part of an evaluation for next season.  In the meantime, congratulations to the Titans and good luck in the rest of the postseason!

jaybird,  as one of those critical, I will be the first to commend your play-by-play.  Very professional job, and quite frankly, I felt you carried the broadcast.  My main criticism of your color partner was the "ooohs, ahhs, geeeez, gaaaawd, oh right there, come on!" type stuff.  I felt like I was just sitting next to a random fan in the stands.  I fully acknowledge that every home broadcast crew will clearly have their biases towards their own team.  I have absolutely no problem with that.  There was just a little too much Harry Carey/Ron Santo emotional outburst that wasn't actual commentary for my liking.

At the end of the day, I still get to see my beloved Titans play on video from the comfort of my home in south Texas.  Nearly 20 years ago when I was a student at IWU, I'd be thankful just to get radio reception for a road game.  So, I'm thankful for what I do have now  Again, kudos to your very professional call.
Hail, Hail, the gang's all here, all out for Wesleyan!

Back from St. Louis. Overstreet and Ziemnik took over the 2nd half. Just like at NCC with the game on the line very late, Ziemnik had a monsterous 3 that gave IWU a 2 point lead after WU had crawled all the way back and taken a brief 1 point lead. Ziemnik made 2 huge 3s and and conventional 3-point play in the last 3:50 (?) plus a Ft after going scoreless in the 1st half. Overstreet shredded WU's defense with with 2 drive to the basket athletic (and one I would call acrobatic) layups on the left block, just as he did 3 or 4 times at Augustana. Overstreet's line is heroic: 16 points, 8 assists, 1 TO. Ron Rose told his team that whichever team won the rebounding battle would win the game and he was right. IWU 40 and WU 39.

Now a word about how ridiculously unfair this D3 tournament is. Can you imagine the uproar in D1 circles if the #3 and #5 teams in the country played each other in Round 2 like NCC and Whitewater did tonight? I know, we have this stupid 500 mile rule which hurts Midwest (not region by area) teams like NCC, Whitewater, IWU and Wash. U. but doesn't hurt teams in the East. And now NCC and IWU must dual next Saturday to make it to Salem.  2 of the 3 NESCAC  play 2 teams from the OADC next week. You will never convince me that there wasn't a way to separate NCC and IWU in Round 3 like the 3 NESCAC teams have been separated.  Why doesn't Williams, Amhurst, and/or M'bury have to play each other in Round 3 like IWU and NCC do? If Williams plays VA Wesleyan and Amherst plays Randolph-Macon in Round 3, why couldn't IWU or NCC play Wooster (do they ever play on the road in NCAA tournament games? The answer to that question is occasionally and when they do they usually lose) in Round 3 instead of each other? The NESCAC can have 3 of the 8 Salem entrants and the CCIW could have had at most 2 and realistically (with Wheaton playing at St. Thomas) only 1 of the Salem 8. I think the sad truth is that D3 really doesn't want the 8 best teams in D3 to battle it out in Salem. It's the thrill of participation that counts. And also the 500 mile rule when the NCAA has billions of dollars to spend.

Pat-Are you anxiously waiting for IWU to disappoint at some time in the tournament?

Just keep in mind, many of our comments (at least mine for sure) were posted during an intense game, green goggles firmly on.

Many of the reasons I was critical of your broadcast partner will be the same reasons a Wash U fan would love the guy!

Great video feed from Wash U!  Watching it full screen it was a tiny bit fuzzy, but mostly I felt like I was there.

I'm watching the On Demand from the game last night.  Color man "Coach K" makes the late Ron Santo sound like Vic Scully in terms of broadcasting objectivity.

On the big Ziemnik 3-pointer, he just starts yelling, "no, no, no, no, no!!"  It was funny, in a Ron Santo or Hawk Harrelson sort of way.

This is the type of call I was referring to, Q.  It wasn't the bias towards his home team that I had an issue with, it was that at times he simply lost all professionalism on the call and basically became a "fan" yelling at the game in some random emotional outburst.

Good season, Thunder.  St. Thomas looks like Wheaton did at the beginning of the year, running out on people and then playing tough defense.  I'd like to see Wheaton come back next year with a more consistent offense, and believe with a year under their belt, some maturity will bring that.  Tyler Peters seemed to taper off at the end of the year as well, and probably due to trying to do too much on his own down the stretch.  A reliable offensive scheme would alleviate a lot of that stress.  But they got a lot of good stuff to build on out of this season.  Next year should be better.

Let's hope NCC or IWU stays in it long enough to avenge the loss to St. Thomas, if no other reason than their moniker is just a different version of the school's name and that just lacks imagination.

I don't think this is a fair assessment at all.  The D3 tourney, though not perfect, is about as fair as I have seen.  Can you imagine the #3 and #5 teams not even getting the chance to play for a national title? Lest you think D1 has all the answers, see BCS football as example #1.

And if no one "will ever convince you"  NCC could be separated from IWU, then feel free to look at the readily available data and propose a solution for the whole tournament.  Smarter people than us have tried and failed given the constraints.  It's easy to criticize what's in place.  Much harder to come up with a reasonable solution.  I think we have the best product we have seen so far in the championship tournament and the NCAA has demonstrated some ability to morph and improve over time.  It could be a lot worse.

And the goal of the tournament is definitively not getting the best 9 teams to Salem.  The goal of the tournament is equal access for all D3teams to have a chance at the final 8.  The current system allows for that.  The D1 football system does not.  I think we d3 fans are extremely fortunate to see the system evolve like it has.

I just watched the last 8 minutes of the game and thought the color guy was perfectly fine.  I agree that he sounded more like a college radio color guy vs. a tv color guy (in terms of being more one-sided) but watch a Bulls broadcast sometime with Stacey King's "Too Big Too Strong Too Fast Too Good!" or all the other homer stuff he yells.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeKSm3ojjp8

They've even developed a sound board to play all of his over-excited exclamations http://www.nba.com/bulls/stacey-king-soundboard.html

I think the glasses were WashU colored but the spirt and compliments for both teams were there.

Hoosier Titan

My take on the color guy, after watching only the first few minutes (the "worst footwork" comment) is this:  I'm a spectator who knows the game.  I wear a green shirt, but I knew Kevin Reed traveled on that play.  I don't need a color commentator from either perspective to tell me someone has terrible this or terrific that--I'll see that for myself as the game progresses.

A certain amount of homerism I can accept--it's a given with most student announcers.  I didn't hear the "no, no, no, no...."  That's annoying on the level of sitting next to a fan from the other team--you accept it as a fact of life.

What I really object to is huge generalizations about players on the basis of one play (especially from someone who's not a student).
You'll never walk alone.
