What Greg said.  Nothing to add, though it was nice to sit with the Rube and Lee Horten.  Three old farts.

Dennis, that means only one each.  I'm not buyin' that from three old guys in the bleachers.  ;D

SNC is pretty good--I know most of your rant is about the shortcomings of NP, but as a measuring stick, SNC is very experienced and very talented, with both recruited experienced as well as a D-1 transfer.

Yes, but that's precisely the point behind why NPU played St. Norbert in the first place. SNC is pretty good -- unlike NCC, the d3hoops.com pollsters probably pegged the Green Knights correctly by slotting them at the edge of the preseason Top 25. But the thing that you may be overlooking is that NPU plays in the CCIW, an outstanding league that most likely has three teams in it that are every bit as good as St. Norbert, if not better. Plus, the middle-of-the-pack CCIW teams will probably be better as well than most of the local competition that North Park will be playing in November and December.

This was the right opponent for NPU to play. The young Vikings need to be able to gauge the task that lies ahead of them in January and February. Yeah, there's something to be said for building up the confidence of freshmen by letting them taste some success against low-level teams in non-conference action. But too much of that does a disservice to the team in the long run. This NPU team needs to see opponents like SNC. The one quibble I have is that the Vikings probably would've been better able to use this game as a measuring stick and/or springboard if NPU had played SNC in late December rather than on opening weekend. But scheduling is something that's dictated more by the availability of the gym and by common open dates than it is by a best-case-scenario timetable for team development, so there's no point in criticizing the scheduling of last Saturday's game.

Congrats to Tyler Peters on winning the first CCIW POTW award this year! A triple-double to start the year is a good sign for the Thunder.

I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

Congrats to Tyler Peters on Player of the Week.  Nothing quite like a triple-double to start your season with confidence.

How do you think the guy on Crossroad feels, scoring 50 and his team loses by 50 as Taylor from Grinnell scores 109 in one game.   Wild.  Who needs a triple double when you can score 109 individually?

Jack Taylor is obviously a good player (and if he ever scores anywhere near 100 points when Grinnell NEEDS him to, I'll advocate him for 1st team All American).  But beating the crap out of an obviously over-matched team does not impress me.  I'm 65, but I'm sure I could get 100+ against a kindergarten team! ;)  (This is NOT a criticism of Jack; he was only doing what the coach ordered.  I think Coach Arsenault is a piece of unsportsmanship crap, when he goes for national attention by VIOLATING the principles of The System by warping it to have ONE player get attention against a clearly over-matched opponent.)

* I think he's probably disappointed because his team lost, not because his 50 was less than half of the prima donna who obviously doesn't like to share the ball. (One fellow starter didn't take even one shot)
* I think Taylor should have only played a few minutes at most in the 2nd half as his team was up by 39 at halftime.
* I think this is one of the most blatant examples of poor sportsmanship I've seen.
* I think the the spotlight here is on the Grinnell coach, and that spotlight highlights a giant a$$hole.
* I think the coach disrespected:
     a) the other team;
     b) his own school for evidently feeling he needed to garner attention for his program by having
         his 109 point scoring star player still in the game with 5:32 to play and a 60 point lead;
     c) His players. Jack Taylor is not the whole team but evidently gets treated as such. What irks me almost
         more than the 109 points he felt he needed to let Taylor stay in the game long enough to score, is the
         fact that he has many other players who are members of the team and spend many hours in team
         activities. They may not be capable of scoring 109 points, but they come to practice each day and put
         in time and effort helping make the team better. In an opponent that you can destroy, the coach had
         the perfect opportunity to reward some of the other team members for their time and efforts.
         Yet, two Grinnell players got only 2 minutes, and two others only 3 minutes each.
* I think the players who only saw 2 or 3 minutes of PT should say "thanks a lot Coach A$$hole."
* Lastly, I think anyone who would defend the Grinnell coach has no concept whatsoever of the definition of
   the word "sportsmanship," and attempting to enlighten them would be an exercise in futility.

Interesting game tonight in Wisconsin - Augustana @ UW-Platteville, 7:00pm.  Platteville was 19-9 overall last year, 10-6 in the WIAC.  The Pioneers are picked 3rd in the powerhouse WIAC this season, behind UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater.

UW-Platteville is led by two Illinois kids - 6-8/232 Chas Cross (Winnebago H.S.) and 6-5 G Jim Stocki (Nuequa Valley H.S.).  Cross is on the 2nd Team of the 2013-14 D3hoops.com preseason All-American squad.

CCIW preseason #3 vs WIAC preseason #3 - looking forward to seeing how this one turns out.

That's not fair to Jack Taylor, Mark. He wasn't being a "prima donna" or a ballhog. He was doing exactly what his coach told him to do; Dave Arseneault game-planned for him to take all the shots. You can't blame a player for following his coach's orders.

I would like to wish a very Happy Birthday to our very own, Titan Q! Thanks for all of your hard work and support for D3 athletics, especially the CCIW.

Greg,

To that I'd say he took 70 shots. SEVENTY! And while he made a fabulous 35 of them, he likewise missed 35 shots. I'll bet two things. First, if he only took, lets say 60 shots, he still would have been considered to have been following his coach's "orders." And second, that chances are good that someone was more open than he was on some of those 35 misses he had. Someone he could have passed to without taking yet another shot.
You can follow orders without going overboard in so doing, and without almost total disregard for the other players on the floor who are supposed to be your TEAMmates. Coach Arseneault Unsportsmanlike is gonna sit him if he only takes 60 shots and passes the ball a little more often? I think not.

Lots of Grinnell College talk on all boards recently and I'll spare everyone my opinion on "the System" but my question to the group relates to off-season skill development:

If you're not one of the designated stars, scorers, or shooters at GC - what motivation do you have to work on your game in the spring, summer, and fall?  Or do you know entering the program what your role will be and you're accepting of it?

Hardly see the point of getting up 400 to 500 shots per day for the privilege of getting to watch Jack "jack".
