I had a conversation with a long retired MIAA coach last week who related his frustration with recruiting against NAIA's.  In many cases you are correct the scholarships offered is not necessarily more than what a D3 can legally give.  However as he said it was common for the NAIA to offer as little as $500 more in aide than they knew the D3 could offer because they knew they could and knew it would make the difference.

It was a very interesting conversation.

I used to work at an NAIA school that regularly fielded Top 25 teams in nearly every sport.  It was very rare for an individual to earn more than a 50 percent tuition scholarship.  Even more so for 100 percent tuition.  The $2,000-5,000 scholarships were the norm, but I did see $500 scholarships and even had a 100 percent tuition, room, board and books from the track team.

The football coach had a former wide receiver in the admissions office who would tweak the academic scholarships.  He could push the scholarships to $9,900 without getting noticed.  The women's soccer coach would sweet talk the financial aid advisor who worked with his students.  As long as the student completed the FAFSA, they would get a lot of need-based aid, especially if they were from out of state.  The advisor loathed an assistant with the women's basketball team.  They received very few favors.

Of course, I would have to think that the retired MIAA coach could name a few Division III schools that seemingly had more money to offer.

I know the conversation has changed since the above was posted, but I have a question. Can a D3 student athlete elect to discontinue playing the sport he/she was recruited to play without risking losing any of the financial aid awarded? It would seem to me that this should be the case since D3 can't award athletic scholarships. Conversely, NAIA schools would be able to repeal athletic financial aid for a student who quit playing the sport, correct?

Since financial aid is not awarded to a student-athlete for athletic reasons, he/she can stop playing sports without having it affect his/her financial aid.

Huge game in the D3 world as well as for both teams (and the CCIW)

Not only that but we have #13 Wheaton at #9 Calvin this afternoon that also appears to be viewable online.  Looks like I'll have just enough time to get up, stretch, knock off a couple of errands and bring a pizza home in time for game #8 vs # 5 tonight.

Final from Grand Rapids:

Hope 80
Carthage 58

Quite a turnaround from last night for both teams.

And this continues to be one of the wackier preludes to the conference seasons (or whatever I'm supposed to call it) in recent memory.   :o

It looks like Alex Rossi has decided to end his playing days for IWU.
It was a very short season for Alex, but what we were able to see, I really liked.
Hope he can finally get healthy, and enjoy his college days.

Yes, disappointing to hear that Rossi has left the team.  He was a rare talent at the D3 level and would have been big difference maker for the Titans this year.

IWU still has plenty of weapons, and should have a very good season, but Rossi just brought something unique to the floor.

Half:

Calvin 45
Wheaton 21

Strange.

I think when you are as perimeter/jumpshot-oriented as Wheaton is, you a very susceptible to days like this.  On the other end, Calvin has been tremendous offensively.

After yesterday's games I was thinking how much different the day 2 games have been over the past few years and figured both CCIW teams would struggle to some degree, but I didn't imagine this.

* Wheaton is 7-28 (.250) from the field, including 2-15 (.133) from 3.  I'd say just about all 15 of those 3-point attempts were open, good looks.

* Calvin is 17-25 (.680) from the field, including 2-5 (.400) from 3.

With Wheaton down 20+ and about 7:00 left, Mike Schauer got T'd up.  The Calvin broadcaster, who moments earlier took a cell phone call while on the air, called it a "hissy fit" by Schauer.

This guy is entertaining.

Final from Grand Rapids:

Calvin 78
Wheaton 51

Postgame ponderings:

1) Is Wheaton too perimeter-oriented?

2) What would the late Art Kimball have done to me had I taken a cell phone call while on the air? ("Q, tell ya what, you leave R.A. Faganel Hall now on foot and I'll pick you up somewhere around Dwight.")

I had a good laugh with that cell phone call during an otherwise sad game.

Players not named Teuscher, Peters or Haynes went 1-24 from the field. Mike Kvam is shooting 33% overall this year after another 0-7.  I think Wheaton has some young guards on the bench that can give something more with those minutes than a purely long-range set-shooter.

Here is the amazing stat for me -- Wheaton bench points = 0.

Only 4 players put the ball in the basket today for the Thunder.
