 Big game for NCC today.  A win means 8-2 heading into #1 UWSP with momentum and a win streak.  And, even a loss and 8-3 noncom record is not a disaster

Back to back losses and a 7-4 noncon record-----seems like a big swing the other way.

I've seen Nate VanArendonk play 3 games and I think, based on Hope v. Lake Forrest, he isn't even Hope's best post player. Lake Forrest has 15 freshmen (don't ask me why) and had 17 sitting on the bench which stretched into the end zone portion of the the 1st row seats. Kind of concerned that Brady Zimmer saw no action last night.

I think Hope fans consider 6-8 soph Brock Benson to be their best post player.  VanArendonk is huge though and IWU has a problem on its hands trying to defend him with 6-5 guys -- including the fact they're putting one of the team's most valuable players (Victor Davis) at risk of foul trouble.

I think Seibring and/or Marietti have to play today to deal with VanArendonk and Benson.  Davis can certainly play the 5, but Ziemnik really can't (or at least, shouldn't)...so have to cover those minutes when Davis is off the floor, and ideally allow him to play some minutes at his natural 4 spot.

I also think Jordan Nelson becomes a very key player for the Titans today.  With Mayberger starting, Nelson becomes the top bench scoring threat.  The Titans will need him to score today.

Good matchup today...I'm going to sample some of that game amid my household duties this afternoon.

Looking forward to Wash-U/Wheaton in a couple of weeks.  Wash-U needs a win since it has already dropped two in-region non-conference games.

FINAL

Carthage-------61
Eastern Ct.-----58

(Formerly) #22 ECSU beaten by 2 CCIW teams.

It seems like every time Carthage goes out on one of these excursions to far-flung places weird things seem to happen.

Last year, they lost twice in Florida to NAIA teams, placing a very good Northwood team tough, only to get killed the next day by a lesser team.

Two years ago, they lost to a lesser D3 team (Washington - Maryland).

____________

Anyway, it seemed like Carthage decided to play to the competition again, dropping Eastern Connecticut 61-58.  That's Carthage's 3rd win against a top 25 team (Wash U and Calvin).   Cameron Van Wyk had the best game of his career (14 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals) with Marlon Senior (18 points, 6 rebounds) and Malcom Kelly (15 pts; 4 rebounds) providing support.  Donte Logan had 4 assists and 1 TO, so whatever was bugging him yesterday (Buffalo St. press) went away.  Kastel did not play and I don't know why.

____________

Since Carthage is done with nonconference play, I can comfortably say that I think they will be quite competitive.  Here's where Carthage has had common opponents with other CCIW teams.

Wash U - Carthage won at home.  IWU won big at home.
WI-Platteville - Carthage won at home in OT; Augie lost on the road.
Calvin - Carthage won on the road; Wheaton lost on the road.
Hope - Carthage lost on a neutral site; Wheaton won on a neutral site.
E Conn - Carthage and North Central won close games on a neutral site.
Alma - Carthage and North Park beat them.

FWIW (and without wearing my Carthage fanboy hat), I think IWU is the best team in the CCIW and there is the group of four teams that will compete for the 3 conference tournament spots.  If I put on my Carthage fanboy hat, then I have to wonder about making reservations in Salem!

Final from Holland:

IWU 91
Hope 83

* Andrew Ziemnik: 21 pts, 11 reb, 5 assists
* Bryce Dolan: 17 pts (5-7 3-point)
* Victor Davis: 14 pts, 6 reb
* Pat Sodemann: 13 pts
* Mike Mayberger: 11 pts, 6 reb

IWU:  26-52 FG (50%), 12-26 3-point (46%)

Sounded like another balanced, veteran effort by the Titans.  IWU really has two outstanding starting forwards - seems like Andrew Ziemnik and Victor Davis get every big rebound and just make so many plays in big moments.  I can't imagine any Division III team has a better 3/4 combo than Ziemnik & Davis.  Ziemnik played both games this weekend with the flu but earned tournament MVP honors.

Bryce Dolan continued his incredible shooting.  He is now 22-33 from 3 (.667) on the season.

IWU was out-rebounded by 4 in the 1st half, but pulled down 9 more boards than Hope in the 2nd.

A nice win over a great program in a great venue.  The Titans are now 9-1 and will close out the non-conference Jan 2 at home vs Franklin.

Buffalo State Leads North Central at the break  36-29

The Cardinals were down by as many as 16 points in this game with 7 minutes left in the half but fought back to get it down to 5 points, on 2 trips to the free throw line by Brandon Williams, who made 1 of 2 each time.

It appears that a technical foul was called on the team against North Central, with 40 seconds to go and then another one was called with 36 seconds to play. Buffalo State's Jordan Glover made all 4 free throws to open up a 9 point lead at 36-27. Williams hit a layup for North Central just before the buzzer to make it the 7 point margin at halftime.

Landon Gamble leads the Cardinals with 12 points and 4 rebounds. In looking at the box score that live stats has provided it has notated that Kevin Honn has a technical foul, so that would account for one of the 3 T's.

Rod Epps is the high man for the Bengals with 11 points. Jordan Glover with all those free throws has 8 points and Justin Mitchell has 7.
Brad Doyley has 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals. Bengals press not quite as effective as it was yesterday against the Redmen but still caused the Cardinals to vcommit 10 turnovers in the 1st half. bengals have 5 TO's.

I smell another barnburner coming up.

Too bad.  Important game to have poor officiating.  Hopefully the Cards can fight back

Q,
I listened to Bosko's interview after the Carthage game today and he said the officiating in the games of yesterday and today were absolutely different than what they had been led to believe prior to the tournament. A friend of mine at the tournament associated with one of the teams indicated that these were D2 and D1 officials. Several of them appear to be larger than life. ;D There were 8 technicals called yesterday in the 2 games and 3 so far today.

Carthage: Kastel did not play today because of a groin injury in pre-game warmups.

Reffing: E Conn St had a lot more fouls than Carthage today.  I would assume refs are local and there may be style issues (with regards to technical fouls, etc.).

Jay, the great thing about that Wheaton @ Wash U game (from a neutral fan perspective) is that there is a lot on the line.  Wash U already has two D3 losses (@ Carthage, @ IWU)...Wheaton has 3 (@ Loras, @ Wooster, @ Calvin).  Neither team can afford to lose that game.

Eastern Connecticut falls to Carthage in another tight game 61-58.

The Warriors fell behind after the first few minutes of the game when the Redmen, down 9-8, went on a 10-0 run to grab an 18-9 lead at the 10:53 mark. Carthage continued to apply the pressure and increased the margin to a 15 point advantage at 26-11 with 7:41 left in the period. The Warriors would come back with 9 unanswered points with 5 from Brian Salzillo and 4 from Trachone Preston to get it down to 26-20. A basket by the Redmen's Cameron Van Wyk and another jumper by Salzillo ended the first half scoring and the Redmen went into the locker room with a 28-20 lead.

Coming out of the break it looked like a repeat of the first period as Carthage once again had a 9-0 spurt to boost the margin back to 15 points. The Warriors would cut into that lead over the next 6 minutes and finally got to within two possessions at 43-38 with 9:33 to go on a jumper by Salzillo and a layup by Brandon Yarborough. The Redmen's lead would fluctuate between 4 and 8 points over the next  8 minutes until Eastern got it down to a 3 point deficit at 52-49 with 1:49 left in the game on a 3 pointer, by who else, Brian Salzillo. Carthge would come right back, however, and get an old fashioned 3 point play by Malcom Kelly to boost the lead back to 6 and after an Eastern turnover, the Redmen's Marlon Senior was fouled and made both free throws to increase the lead to 8 with 1:02 remaining. Another Eastern turnover resulted in more free throws for Carthage and now the lead was 9. A three pointer by the Warriors'  Preston with 37 seconds narrowed it to 6 and the foul parade was in effect. Down 60-55 with 6 seconds left  Preston was fouled attempting another 3 pointer.  he made all 3 free throws to bring the Warriors within 2 points at 60-58 and the Redmen's Kelly was fouled on the inbounds. He made 1 of 2 and Eastern had a 3 point attempt at the buzzer to try and send the game into OT that wouldn't go down.

Brian Salzillo led the Warriors and was the game's high score with 23 points (10x18 fg, 3x9 3's)and he had 3 steals. Trachone Preston had  15 points (4x9 fg, 2x5 3's, 5x5 ft) with 5 assists and 3 rebounds. Leroy Haye didn't score but led the Warriors with 8 boards, in only 14 minutes of floor time. MIke Garrow had a rough day for Eastern as he was only 1x9 from the floor. He finished with 8 points and 6 of those came on a 6x9 effort at the line. Brandon Yarborough finished with 8 points (4x6 fg) and 5 boards.

Warriors were 21x54 from the field (38.9%), 5x19 from behind the arc (26.3%) and 11x16 from the line (68.8%). They did have more  turnovers than Carthage  with 14 for the Warriors to 12  for the Redmen.  Eastern had 37 rebounds to 30 for Carthage. The Redmen's ability to limit their turnovers today was the key to victory for them. Yesterday they were hounded into 28 TO's by Buffalo State and 17 of those were outright steals. No such trouble for Carthage today.

Carthage was led by Marlon Senior with 18 points (5x11 fg, 0x2 3's, 8x11 ft), 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Malcom kelly had 15 points (4x6 fg, 1x2 3's, 6x8 ft), and 4 rebounds. Cameron Van Wyk had 14 points (7x11 fg) 4 rebounds and 3 steals.

The starting center for the Redmen Mike Kastel injured his groin during warmups for the game and did not play. In addition starting guard Donte Logan twisted his ankle and left the game for good with 8:36 to play and the Warriors closing in. Logan finished with only a single point, 4 assists, 2 rebounds and a steal.

The Redmen shot 20x47 from the field (42.6%), 3x11 from 3 point range (27.3%) and 18x25 from the line(72.0%).

Eastern falls to 7-3 and will probably drop completely out of the Top 25 poll. The Warriors will return to action on January 4th when they return to conference play with a trip to Plymouth State and a 3:00 PM tip off.

Carthage improves to 7-4 and will be off until they open conference play at Augustana on january 4th at 8:00 PM

NCC/Buff State sounds like a crazy game - Todd Raridon has been ejected and all kinds of stuff going on.
