Another dismal performance from NPU today, as the Vikings faded down the stretch. They had whittled a 16-point lead down to two midway through the second half, and put up a three-pointer that would've given them the lead. But their continued inability to grab a rebound restricted them to a bunch of one-and-dones. There were a bunch of bad calls by the officials (according to the UWO radio guy, the refs seemed to have a knack for simultaneously making opposing calls and then dickering with each other to see which one they'd pick, and the one that they picked invariably favored the Titans), and it finally boiled over into back-to-back bench techs on Tom Slyder and an unidentified assistant with 3:15 left. The four ensuing free throws bumped up a Titans lead from 8 to 12, and that was pretty much it.

UWO is not a good team; like NPU, the Titans came into the game with a 2-6 record. The Vikings are bottoming out.

Here comes that barnburner I got a sniff of as Buffalo State leads North Central 75-70 with 1:13 left to play.

After the teams  missed shots and turnovers the Bengals  Chris Thompson is fouled and makes 1 of 2 and the lead is now 76-70 with 1:13 to play.

North Central commits another turnover and fouls the Bengals Justin Mitchell, who makes them both to make it 78-70.

The teams once again exchange TO's and then the Cardinals miss a 3 point attempt and foul Rod Epps, who extends the lead to 80-70 with 33 ticks left. This game is over and Buffalo State will claim the Holiday Championship. The foul parade is called off and North Central gets a basket with 10 seconds left to make the final score 80-72

29 fouls on the Cards.  4 technical fouls, Gamble and Burchett foul out.  :o  For some reason I think that this is our final visit to O-town.

I was at the game.  Oshkosh played a spirited effort; they are very young but are well coached.  NPU is weak.  All the hub bub at the end was nothing more than frustration on the part of the NPU bench over the weak performance.  Bob Brunell the UW-O radio guy is always bitching about the refs; I can't listen for long when he starts that.

Well, good for the UWO radio guy for complaining about the refs. It says something positive about a PBP guy when he is even-handed enough to point out bad reffing that is going in favor of his team. (Now, if he would only go to the trouble of learning how to pronounce the names of the other team's players and head coach ... ::)).

As for why Tom Slyder and the unidentified assistant were called for the techs, I highly doubt that what you said regarding Tom's motivation ("nothing more than frustration ... over a weak performance") is true. The techs came at 3:15 with NPU down by eight at that point. The Vikings were still very much in the ballgame when those techs were called.

No doubt that the Vikings are weak. I've been saying it on CCIW Chat for a month now. But they're very young, too; there's only one senior in the roster, and the nine NPU players who saw the floor today consisted of that senior, two juniors, two sophomores, and four freshmen. That's even younger than UWO's squad.

The Cardinals were down by 16 with 7 minutes left in the 1st half and whittled the deficit to 7 at the buzzer. However, after only 5 minutes of play in the 2nd stanza, Buffalo St. had built the lead back up to 16. NCC then got it in gear, coming all the way back to take a 3 point lead with 6:58 remaining. But the last 6:58 proved to be a nightmare as Buffalo outscored the Cards 17-6 over that period.
NCC was called for 29 fouls, including 3 Ts and Buffalo for 19, including 1 T. In the 2nd half NCC was whistled 17 times compared to only 8 for Buffalo. Landon Gamble and Jack Burchett fouled out. Buffalo went to the line 38 times compared to just 20 attempts for the Cardinals. In attempting to overcome the FT discrepancy and grind out a victory the Cards hurt themselves in several ways. Among them were the facts that they shot only 28 of 64 (43.8%), including 5 of 21 (23.8%) from distance, and 11 of 20 (55%) from the FT line. Additionally, with the score tied at 70, the Cards missed 10 consecutive shots before David Robinson's meaningless last basket of the game. Lastly, they failed to take care of the ball, committing 18 turnovers.

* Its interesting that while the Athlete Connections Holiday Classic was held in Orlando, FL., it was hosted by Buffalo, NY State.

Maybe it has something to do with the huge number of former Buffalonians down there. It sometimes seems like half of the people who live in central Florida used to reside in upstate New York. After my late father retired with my mother to Florida, he said that their retirement community was "Buffalo without the snow shovels." ;)

I'd like to hear from someone who witnessed the game in person.

Good luck with that, Kovo. There were "officially" 84 people at the game. And thats with free admission.

It seems technicals were in abundance yesterday. Not only were 4 called in the NCC/Buffalo game, but they apparently made an appearance in the NPU/Oshkosh game. As indicated above, the Orlando tournament was "hosted" by Buffalo, NY State. I'm not sure if hosting involves contracting for referees but if so, it seems possible that the refs may have worn brown shirts, and been recruited from the ranks of the Neo-Sturmabteilungs.

With the NCAA mandate to "clean up" the game this year after many years of admittedly too rough play, its little wonder that numerous disagreements between coaches and referees have occurred, and will continue to do so. Thus, it seems there is a pretty high degree of probability that many of these confrontations will escalate to the point that several more Ts than we have seen in recent years, will result.

Yes, as I said in my original post, the Vikings are crippled by their inability to rebound. Their average rebounding deficit is almost 13 boards per game, which is absolutely ridiculous.

I like this quote:

I'm still trying to understand what makes Ziemnik such an effective player. He doesn't overly impress you on any given play or possession but at game's end, there he is with a double/double

That's one of the things that I love about basketball... A guy can fail the eye test but be an absolute stud... especially a guy who plays incredibly hard and does the little things well.

SP has had a handful of those guys over the year... and Ziemnik plays very similarly from the IWU games I've caught over the years.
