That shoulder dip by Kelly was blatant and add in that push off a few minutes ago.
Play the best to be the best.

Titan Q

Carthage 80
IWU 73

Too much Malcom Kelly (25 pts, 5-8 3-point) and Marlon Senior (20 pts, 3-4 3-point) tonight for the Titans.  If Carthage shoots the basketball like that (.529 FG, .524 3-point), they can play with just about anyone.

iwu70

I give CC all credit, they had a good plan to slow the Titans down and they did.  Great games by Kelly 25 and Senior 20.

Titans played well, but a poor percentage from 3 (32%) and some poor perimeter defense in the first half.  CC shot 52% from field and 3.

Zman 15
David 12
Overstreet 11
Sodemann 10

Some good minutes sparking a short run off the bench by Zimmer.  Good to see him back.

A big lost opportunity by the Titans, with Augie losing tonight to EC.

Lots of basketball still to be played.  Yes, 11-3 may win the league.

Congrats to CC tonight.  See you in Bloomington later on.

In other significant CCIW news -- Bosko wore red pants tonight.

A little context please...

carthage guy

I stated yesterday that marlon senior would need a good night shooting and that the Red Men would need to shoot 50% to win.  Well, both happened and Carthage is firmly in the middle of the CCIW race...

What shocked me most about tonight was that their were no tricks!!  Carthage looked IWU in the eye and just flat beat them :o

IWU clearly has the deepest and maybe most talented 10 guys in division 3.  The good  news for Carthage and everyone else in Div III is you can only play 5 of them at once.  IWU depth is impressive and they attack offensively from many directions but this version of the Titans doesnt defend like previous good teams i have seen.  They had no chance defending Kelly and tried multiple guys none with any success.  Really, Marlon Senor and Reese Herth got any shots they wanted as well.  All together the better team won tonight and it required a great effort but no smoke and mirrors.

Tonight Malcom Kelly was clearly the best player on the floor.... Clearly! He went around bigger defenders and shot over smaller ones for another 25 pt night on, i believe 8 of 14 shooting.  IWU advantage upfront was not enough to overcome Malcom and Carthage great perimeter shooting as a whole.  The effort from the Redmen was the differnce tonight from previous losses that just has you perplexed as a fan.
The second half is now WIDE open.... can we have that elmhurst 1st half back ;)

Take two Aleve for arthritis, Pregame and half-time Dunks AARP extra large double double (with free donut of course) and had a few senior moments

No, not the Titan senior fan bus just Gramps and Malcolm who put a hurt on the Titans tonight.

Wheaton held on to top NCC.  The Thunder managed a number of critical possessions in the second half very well to secure the win.  this game could have gone the other way pretty easily.

NCC played tough all night, they just couldn't find the offense they needed late in the game.

I thought Nate Haynes did a fantastic defensive job tonight, and did so while avoiding foul trouble.

The Thunder survived this week, and now on the road at Elmhurst and Augie!!!

No easy ones for anybody the rest of the way.

Since I went to the CC-IWU game, I'll throw in my thoughts as well.

* Malcom Kelly had a great game, but more importantly, Reese Herth and Kevin Sykes looked highly engaged.  Both seemed to slump when Kelly returned, but Kelly waited for his opportunities and both Herth and Sykes really stepped up (Herth, 13 pts and Sykes 5 pts; 5 assists and only 1 TO).
* Excellent effort from   Marlon Senior as well (20 pts; 7 rebounds and clutch free throws done the stretch).
* Mike Kastel played solid ball (strong D), but got into foul trouble (again).  Cameron Van Wyk gave quality minutes off the bench, giving some solid offense, even though his D is a notch below Kastel.
* Both teams played really, really hard.  It was a great game to watch.  The refs ate their whistles a bit as it got a bit rough in the 2nd half before they reigned play in.  Generally, I can't complain about the reffing.
* Carthage guy is right; IWU goes to the bench and you think, whoo, we'll get a break here and then the guy off the bench is just as good.  Very, very deep team.
* Andrew Ziemnick was MIA in the first half and then had a great second half (13 pts; 6 rebounds in the 2nd half).
* I really love Victor Davis (12 points; 10 rebounds; plays his butt off).  He's probably my favorite CCIW player not on Carthage.
* Soderman and Overstreet had nice games.  Zimmer showed some excellent effort in the 2nd half.
* I don't understand why Marietti didn't play more (just 14 minutes).
* Good crowd: 2025 announced.

Basketball aside; I most say that I have never been more offended at a basketball game then I was tonight. I was even more offended by Carthage's Assistant A.D. Several students, in the student section that I was sitting next to, made offensive and borderline racist chants at Victor Davis. When it was brought the Assistant A.D's attention he looked me in my face and laughed while saying he didn't hear it because he was on the other end of the gym. Then he asked me if I was a parent of one of IWU's players. What relevance does that have? An apology on behalf of the students and school would have been appreciated. There's nothing wrong with student fans heckling the other team, but they crossed the line.

Play the best to be the best.

Wheaton 59
Naperville 46

Defensive battle.  Tied at 34 w 10:45 to play the Thunder went on a 25-12 run to end the game.  Peters was the only Wheaton player in double figures w 20.   Gamble and Williams had 12 and Kmiec 11 for the Cards.

What did they say and where were you sitting?  That upsets me.  Every basketball player should bring the energy Victor Davis brings to the game.  Besides, he ticked off Coach G in Augie land.  That makes him a legend in my camp.

Does 10-4 earn you a piece of the CCIW Championship?
