Doesn't 1997 has some sort of minor significance in IWU hoops history?

I remember it well.  The weekend before the sectional, the Titans survived an enormous scare from an upset-minded team.  IWU trailed by 1 before scoring the final 2 points with 0:08 to play, and won by 1...

Mike Marietti's improvement will be critical against a big and experienced Calvin team. Calvin played a great game in St. Louis to knock off Wash. U., shooting 52% (30/58), 47% on 3s (8/17), and 65% from the line (15/23). Austin Parks, a 6' soph. guard came off the bench to score 18 and was 4/5 on 3s. Calvin has good depth as 8 players got at least 12 minutes. Jordan Daley, a 6'3" soph. guard, scored 12. Calvin's bench outscored Wash. U. 23-13. Chris Klimek was called for a technical. Terrible attendance of only 476. Regarding attendance, noticed that the Calvin/Hope Jan. game at Calvin drew 4,800. I'm assuming at least 3,000 were Hope fans and that this has to be the biggest D3 crowd of the 2013/14 season (similar to the ending football game between DePauw and Wabash).

Not necessarily a safe assumption - Calvin also draws well (generally top 3,4 attendance in the country).

My guess would be roughly an even split; perhaps even a slight plurality of Calvin fans.  (And that is probably THE top d3 bball rivalry.  Both Calvin and Hopes fans hold that 'in west Michigan, an atheist is anyone who doesn't care who wins'! ;D

Mr. Ypsi

Deeply grateful to Calvin for knocking off WashU, thus putting the sectional in B'town rather than St. Louis.

I vote we show our gratitude by beating the snot out of 'em! ;D  (But nicely, of course!)

Mr. Ypsi

Gotta be a good omen that the last time IWU hosted a sectional, they won 'the big doorstop'.

Though if we (and they) get that far, both Tillema (UWSP) and Toomey (Amherst) scare the he!! outa me. :o

I was there and I'm guessing that of the 4800 who attended the game at VNA in January, at most 1000 of the crowd consisted of Hope fans.

I'm  grateful too. I think I can go see the Knights play again this season.

Wow - I'm not doubting you, but with their rabid fan base and being so close, I would have thought they would have at least 2,000 of the 4,800.  Or did you guys 'Bogart' all the tickets?! ;D

You don't think we would let Hope have most of the tickets now do you? There are limits to our hospitality.

If my memory serves, Hope received about 750 tickets for the game at Van Noord to sell at their ticket office in Holland.  To be divided among students, faculty, season ticket holders.  With leftovers going to the general public.  This year Hope did not sell its full allotment, though I don't know what that final number was, I would guess around 650.

With the larger VanNoord, Calvin also has tickets available to the general public online typically, meaning some Hope fans could buy  through Calvin College.  This number is probably in the less than 100 range.

Attendance for the game at Van Noord was listed as 4800.  And if you believe that I'm Ray Finkle.

That limit is 17% of capacity at both locations now with both schools low-balling their rival.  Fun rivalry!

Congratulations to Wheaton.  They have really been playing to the level we knew they were capable of.
The IWU vs Calvin game should be a great game.  Calvin is kinda flying under the radar a little bit.  They looked very good vs Wash U.  Great quick to the post and outside for the open shot.
Finally I thought the officiating at the Wheaten game was at a good level of calls and letting the best players on the floor decide the game.  I heard many other coaches interviews that said the refs were letting the players play.  Seems like the officials may have been told to do it.  Lets hope that's how it stays I hate seeing games decided with the best players on the bench.

Delighted to see the Sectional at IWU.  Well-deserved.   Calvin - IWU match-up looks like another great game, with similar type teams, good guard play, some accomplished bigs, good team depth, and both teams shooting a very high percentage.  Will be important that Marietti and Davis play well again, have a big games vs.  Calvin's bigs.  Perhaps we'll see some of Nick Anderson on Friday too.  Pretty sure Coach Rose will again go with the bigger starting line-up.

The officiating in the second half of the IWU-St. Norbert game was OK.  They also seemed to let the players play and not toot it up too too much, like they had done in the first half.

What's the take on the WC-Dickinson game?  Wheaton will surely be familiar with, comfortable in the environs of the Shirk Center, their third trip there in the past few months.

Let's hope for an all CCIW re-match for the Final Four bid.  Yes, echoes of '97 would be just fine with me.

With many fans coming from WC and Calvin, The Shirk should be really jumping this weekend.  Students on Spring break at IWU, due back the following Monday.  Hope many come back 2-3 days early and support the Titans.  Open the dorms!

Congrats to Wheaton and to the Titans on SWEET SIXTEEN.  Keep it rolling . . .

Nice win for the Thunder tonight.  Nice to be the only team in blue and orange at Devos tomorrow night.

I wouldn't be too smug about Hope losing if I were you. I watched some of that overtime game, and PSUB looks legit.

Smug?  Really?  I was happy with the Wheaton win.  I am a fan of this team.  Do you have a problem with that?

Furthermore, my opinion was that it would be preferable to play a team from Penn as opposed to playing Hope at home in front of 3,000 screaming home towners.

No disrespect to PSUB intended and none expressed.

Not that I speak for Greg but the undertone in his post was his point that PSUB looked awfully good and shouldn't be underestimated. I don't think it had anything to do with your approach to your (my) team. Obviously neither of those teams was going to beat Wheaton this past weekend. They are playing at a really high level.
