Mr. Ypsi became Grandpa Ypsi last night.  Virtual cigars to everyone! :)

Mother and son doing well; father exhausted but euphoric.
Congrats! I'll take one of those virtual chocolate cigars! :)

Congrats Chuck!  -- to you, the Mrs, and to the new parents!  Yes, hope the new wee one came out with a good Titan shirt on!  And, I'm sure the new parents would except any donations, in any currency, for the new bambino's IWU college fund for the future.  By that time, class of 2035 or 2036 graduates, it will only cost a cool 400 grand to get an IWU education.  That's about 2.8 million renminbi for those of you who are so concerned about foreign currency.

Gong Xi, Gong Xi! to the new parents.  Warmly welcome then new wee lad.  He'll likely be working for the Chinese come his graduation in '35 or '36.

IWU70 -- now in cold, rainy, really lousy grey Minneapolis -- heading for the IWU campus for graduation this Sunday, flying today.  Gotta personally say farewell to Vic, Zman and all the seniors.  (and, of course, many many others in the Class of 2014!).

Ypsi's grandkid said his first words soon after birth.  "I want to give money to IWU. In $US of course."

What does he think of IWU's chances in Salem this year? :)

Congrats, Chuck. Enjoy and spoil him!

Congrats Ypsi.  Remember to give him plenty of pop and candy prior to dropping him back off at his parents.  Ah, the priveleges of grand-parenthood.

Thanks, everyone. ;)  Just got back from a quick trip (other son had to get back for work - fortunately South Bend is only about 3 hours from Ypsi) to meet the new arrival.  He is simply the cutest. baby. ever.  (And I'm not a bit biased! ::))

No green eyes - they're brown like both his parents.  And, alas, I'm sure daddy will have far more influence on his rooting preference than grandpa.  He is a Michigan alum and rabid fan - despite living less than two miles from Touchdown Jesus, he wears Michigan apparel even during ND-UM football week!  Oh,well - UM is my grad school alum status, and they are my #1 D1 team.  So I will probably continue to be the only one in my family (except for a niece who attended IWU) to give a hoot about the Titans - and she, alas, couldn't care less about sports.

Re: Greg Sager's Last Post

This will be my last post on the topic as well.  I've taken a few days to think about it, and I feel the fundamental issue here is that the exclusion of schools that follow a particular creed require a reason that goes well beyond a 'unproven assertion'.  While you might believe it makes sense of a hypothetical level, my counterexamples are well grounded.  In Ohio, we see that Catholic schools dominate high school athletics in states, but John Carroll does not dominate D3 athletics in that state by any stretch.  The idea of the Chicago area as somehow exception compared to the rest of the United States does not make sense to me at all, but that may be because I've lived other places in the United States with similar demographics and have never observed the Catholic dominance in college athletics that you feel will happen here.

So, while I reject your hypothesis and you accept it, my vitriol at this discussion goes beyond that.  I believe that the exclusion of any particular race and creed is fundamentally wrong.  There is already too much 'group think' in this country in our academic, political, religious and corporate institutions where views are accepted without challenge because a particular group fails to associate or communicate with those with contrary views.  I believe an example of this 'group think' is in the college administrators that you talk with that proposed this view to you.  I highly doubt they deal with anyone who would dare say it doesn't make sense, it could be construed as bigotry and it may just be out and out wrong.  Furthermore, I am convinced they would volunteer to you what they would never say in public because somebody like me might call them on it.  That just isn't welcome and I suspect a large reason why you'll say you heard this on a public forum but won't offer up who said it to you.

But this is unfortunate.  I believe that having discussions about complex issues is necessary and will help the right decision be made instead of talking with only those with similar viewpoints and perpetuating existing prejudices.   In this case, athletics in general and college athletics in particular provide opportunities to break down barriers and open up a larger world to students, but exclusion of a particular creed prohibits this communication.  In the very small world we live in today, I believe our college aged students are best served with exposed to a larger world view so that can understand their own views as well as opposing views and draw their own conclusions.

So, it is clear to me that you do not believe in any way that the argument or the viewpoint that the exclusion of Catholic institutions in the CCIW is bigoted and I apologize for implying that you were bigoted for putting the argument out there.  But I do believe that the viewpoint is a disservice to the CCIW in general and the students it serves in particular and I hope you will have the courage to tell the administrators that tell you this in the future that there are those who believe this.

That's why Joe needs to post here more often. He has the highest chuckles-to-post ratio on CCIW Chat.

There's no Evangelical Covenant church in his hometown, and the nearest one is 14 miles away, so I don't know where his family goes to church. But his folks have Covie backgrounds. In fact, his dad and I went to the same Covenant church camp on Lake Chautauqua in western New York every summer when we were kids. (As you might've guessed by this point, Drew will be a legacy at NPU.) His dad occupied space on the bench played football for North Park back during my era.

Drew, who's gotta be about eight inches taller than his old man, is a bit of a sleeper. He really didn't come on until the end of his senior season at Clarkston, but he's a nice shooter and Tom Slyder sees a lot of upside in him. Put him on the JV team, give him a year or two to develop, and we'll see what happens.

They used to attend Faith Covenant in Farmington Hills, but that is quite a hike from Clarkston, especially since there isn't a good way to get from one place to another.  Drew did appear to have quite a growth spurt since the last time I saw him a few years ago.

Make you a deal - you get cutest baby girl; I get cutest baby boy.

Oh, and congratulations!  (But trust me - being a grandparent is far less stressful than being a parent!)
