IWU men's golf team has a legitimate chance to add another national championship in North Carolina later this month. This is the first nonbasketball post I have made, so cut me some slack in this off-season.

IWU women have some chance for another national title now too -- in softball.  They open regional play at home this weekend vs. Lake Forest, with a 37-5 record and an 18 game winning streak.  Fontbonne and Anderson also on campus for the regional.  IWU baseball has to win the CCIW tournament @Augie this weekend to play on in the post season, in the NCAA tournament.  They had a similarly lacklustre record in 2010, then got very hot and rushed all the way to the D3 national crown.  One can always hope for a repeat of that amazing run.  The women are really good with great pitching and stellar defence.  Don't think the men have the horses (pitching or hitting) to go too too far this year, but we'll see.  I'd bet a few Yuan on the women, but not so much on the men's chances.

Good luck to all TITAN teams in the coming few weeks.

IWU70 -- enjoying the Bloomington Spring, all the blooming trees around town.  A nice time of year to be in Central Illinois -- especially on my bike cruising on Constitution Trail.

I am weary of iwu70's endless drum-beating for Illinois Wesleyan on CCIW Chat for each and every reason of which he can possibly conceive, whether it has anything to do with sports or not. But I am also well aware of d3boards.com etiquette, which suggests that someone should not complain about a post or a thread unless he or she has something new to contribute. So here's a story about some CCIW student-athletes who are making a real difference in one little boy's life.

Reading this story will not change your life. It probably won't even change your day. But it's a nice reminder of some of the positive things that college sports can do that have nothing to do with the scoreboard.

Augie recruits:

* Jordan Hathorn, 5'9" 165 pound guard from Maynard Evans HS in Orlando, FL.  Averaged 12.0 ppg as a senior. Played his soph. & junior seasons at Rock Island IL HS. Said to have graduated from HS in Orlando in 2011. Whereabouts unknown since then.

* Joe Ranallo, 6'0" 170 pound combo guard from Conant HS in Hoffman Estates, IL. 16 points and 5 assists per game.
43% 3 pt. FG. 86% FT.

* Brandon Schattner, 6'1" 175 pound guard from Wilmot Union HS in Wilmot. WI. 16.4 ppg, 3.5 apg, 3.2 spg. 46% FG, 73% FT.

TQ previously reported on Dylan Sortillo a 6'2" 175 pound guard from Bettendorf IA HS-- 12.1 ppg. 47.5% FG, 46.6 3 pt FG, 78.1% FT, and 6'8" 210 pound Tanner Logan from Moline IL HS who averaged 6.3 rpg, and scored only 5.5 ppg.

The 6'8" Logan is Augie's only "big" recruit this year. This is a distinct break from tradition as highly successful coach Grey "Stomper" Giovanine has a history of stockpiling "big"s who each year form a big percentage of the Augie bench. Last season Augie had a 6'9" player who saw only 41 minutes of action, a 6'6" player who played 62 minutes, and a prized 6'7" freshman recruit who saw all of 27 minutes of PT all year:(

Its doubtful that very many teams have such sizable reserves.

Greg, good post.  Nice work by those students.

No "drum beat" today from me.  I'm back to the spa at Shirk.  :)

Wait, so if IWU's incoming class has potentially 50 Chinese students out of what 700 maybe?  That's over 7%

As an IWU alum that makes me  :o  ???  :(

That's still well under the world average of 18.6% however.

Done with the Spa at Shirk for this visit :) . . . heading back to MSP and the elders now.  Both parents, true Titans, now 96.

22, I think the IWU incoming class this year will be more like 480-520, depending on the yield.  IWU plans to reduce the size of the student body a bit over the next few cycles, as the demographic of outgoing HS seniors also declines.  They are moving to a new enrolment model to stay within budgets more carefully and also recognize the demographic realities.  However, up to now the international student population at IWU has only been about 100 students total, or about 4-5%.  Recent total enrolment was about 2,050 as I recall.  We've been working hard to recruit top -quality international students, trying to get to perhaps 200 total on campus, or perhaps about 8-9%.  We haven't gotten there with this intake, but a good start in that direction.  Looks like perhaps 150-160 on campus in total this fall, so that would be perhaps 6-7 %.  Within a few more cycles, if we find the right, high-quality ones, we might get to our 200 or 8-9% goal, even 10%.  We are also working hard on domestic diversity, minority students from the US.  In the international cohort, a large part of those qualified and coming -- and many more willing to pay more now too -- come from China.  We also have students from many other countries, in Europe, Latin America, Africa, Middle East, and several other Asian countries, -- largest second group has been from Vietnam in recent years.

We'll see how it goes.  All the liberal arts colleges with high price points, do face some very serious challenges in enrolment, in demographics and in financial constraints moving forward.  I'm very optimistic about IWU's efforts to recruit high-quality international students to make the campus life, culture and practice more , diverse, global and reflective of the world situation.  We'll see.

Off to MSP today -- had a great week on campus, even with all the challenges and obstacles to moving ahead, and enjoyed graduation and the Class of '14 greatly.  Full of prospect and potential for major contributions to IWU, the community and beyond.  Good luck to them in all future endeavors.

More later,
IWU70

Greg,

What I find out iwu70's posts is that you don't have to actually read them since they are basically redundant.

*Everyone associated with IWU is proud of everyone else associated with IWU
*The campus is progressive and nostalgic at the same time
*There is surprisingly no bad weather when someone is visiting there
*Anyone deciding to go there is immediately smarter
*Everyone wants to give money (US$ of course) to their alma mater
*A basketball forum is an appropriate place for talking about non-basketball ramblings which are probably a bit meaningful to a few people on the board

Elmhurst
* Brandon Auker, 6-0 PG (Evansville Memorial H.S.) - 12.2 ppg, 4.5 apg, 2.4 rpg
* Chris Parrilli, 6-2 SG (Geneva H.S.) - 11.1 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 2.1 apg
* Michael Plunk, 6-4 PG/SG (Blue Ridge H.S.) - 18.7 ppg, 5.0 apg

More Elmhurst recruits:

* Matt Brachmann, 6'3" F from Momtini Catholic. Montini's all time leading scorer and rebounder.
* Brandon Schwebke, 6'3" F from Belvedere North. Illinois State in 2013-14, but no basketball. 16.4 ppg and 8.4 rpg at Rock Valley Jr. College in 2012-13.
* Mitch McLaughlin, 6'2" G from Cedar Rapids, IA. Xavier HS. Attended D1 Drake Univ the last 3 years and was on the basketball team for the last 2 yrs.
   Played a total of 7 minutes in 2012-13, and did not score. Played 13 minutes in  2013-14, and scored 1 point.
* Morten Mueller, 6'9" F/C from Cologne, Germany. Played for a club team in Germany last year.

Four more guards on a team where 5 returning guards averaged at least 12.9 minutes a game in 2013-2014. Freshman Nathan Rogers averaged 12.9 minutes a game, fellow freshman Harlan Tucker averaged 15.1, soph Bryant Ackerman 20.3, soph Pat Coleman 21.4, and soph Kyle Wuest averaged 27.1 minutes a game in 2013-2014. And Brachmann and Schwebke, both at only 6'3" might be better suited to a guard position rather than a forward in the CCIW.

"RECRUITING" NEWS

It has been confirmed that 6'6" 225 pound forward Charlie Rosenberg, who spent last season as a redshirt at D2 Minnesota State, will return to North Central next season for his final year of eligibility.
Should he be in the same shape, and be able to play at the same skill level that he demonstrated during 2013 summer league play, there is every reason to envision him as an all-conference player in 2014-15.

He's going to be in better shape.  He practiced with a top D2 team for an entire year.  The only things between him and some all-conference honors will be an ability to not commit a personal foul every 3 minutes.

Unfortunately, Joe, I have to read them when he plunks a sentence like this:

Quote from: iwu70 on May 05, 2014, 01:20:14 PMI'm sure Greg will be happy to know this.

... right into the heart of a paragraph so prolix that it makes my wordier efforts look like the work of Ernest Hemingway. ;)

To iwu70's credit, he's obviously hit upon an insidiously effective way to get people to read lengthy posts. Therefore, in the future I will make it a point to drop lines such as, "As sac would surely point out ...", "Mr. Ypsi would definitely be interested to know that ...", or "I think it was AndOne who once said ..." into anything I write that's long enough to make eyelids droop. ;)

In Rosenberg's case I have no doubt that the redshirting was literal, as I'm guessing that a lot of the blood of his fellow Mustangs ended up on his practice jersey. ;)
